Grosse Pointe Garden Society - Germination - Review: The Dirt Hits the Fan

If you're wondering how deep the roots of chaos go in Grosse Pointe Garden Society, the latest episode, “Germination,” digs them up, repots them, and tosses them in a blender with juice from a broken cleanse.

The Future Is Frantic
The episode opens four months in the future, and Catherine is unraveling. She’s just returned from the gala, still in her gown, clutching her secret like it’s the last drop of sanity she has left. Her breathing is ragged, her hands are shaking, and she’s guzzling juice straight from the container like it’s a coping mechanism—which, honestly, it might be.

Cue Tucker, emerging from the bedroom, suspicious and calm in that quietly terrifying way. He knows something’s up. She lies (badly), claiming she was dancing at Birdie’s. But he sees through her like cellophane. "You don’t look drunk, you look guilty," he tells her—and he’s right. Catherine breaks down. They exchange cryptic words about deals, secrets, and how they’ll never be the same again.

Tucker asks what she did. She leads him to the couch. She whispers. His face changes. Pure horror. And we cut. The show's pacing? Masterful.

Back to the Present: The Plot Thickens Like Overwatered Soil
Catherine gets a fraud alert from her credit card company—someone used it at a casino. She tells them Tucker is overseas, but the passport in her drawer says otherwise. Uh oh. Tucker’s been lying. And things just keep spiraling from there.

Voiceover kicks in—and this time, it’s Tucker narrating. He doesn’t know much about flowers, but building a business is just like growing a garden: "plant the right people under you, and you’ll grow."

The visuals shift with his words: Bertie and Joel in bed—still hot and heavy three weeks in. Alice back in her classroom, walking a tightrope of redemption. Brett, laser-focused on rebuilding a carburetor, dodging Cricket’s juice-cleanse lectures like they’re bullets.

Tucker’s voiceover continues, connecting everything to the theme of “root systems” and “weathering storms.” It’s pretentious. It’s poetic. It’s so Grosse Pointe.

Brett’s Breakdown (And Carburetor Crisis)
Brett is drowning. His business is on shaky ground, the car still isn’t ready, and his investor (Connor’s friend) is breathing down his neck. "I’m the money guy," he says, "and I don’t pay for lipstick on a pig." Ouch.

Meanwhile, Cricket’s juicing philosophy isn’t helping. She lectures Brett about carbon emissions and gas-powered cars. Brett finally snaps: “This isn’t just a gas-powered car, this is a 1968 Camaro!” Then, in an iconic meltdown, he dumps the juice on the carburetor. Their relationship? Fizzling fast.

Bertie’s Fantasy Collides With Reality
Back at Bertie’s house, her housekeeper Olga serves as the unlikely truth-teller. She’s unimpressed with Joel and even more unimpressed with Bertie’s delusions. Bertie thinks she and Joel have a future—Olga thinks she’s delusional. When Bertie drops the bomb that she’s actually believes things could work with Joel, it shifts the dynamic. Olga softens—for like, two seconds—before delivering the brutal truth: “Are you sure that’s what Joel wants?”

Catherine’s Career Comeback
Tucker's lying because his business has tanked. He has been trying to win money at casinos in Vegas and Atlantic City. Catherine, ever the supportive wife, is trying to launch her real estate comeback, but keeps hitting walls—clients already have agents. She finally gets a bite from a jet-setter looking to sell her house, only to find out she’s co-listing it with none other than Pierce, the man who's company she had to walk out of and resident ego monster.

They engage in a sales-off, over-the-top pitch and all, but Catherine’s local knowledge ends up tipping the scales. She doesn’t need Pierce’s clients—she needs her client’s PTA contact list. Brilliant move. Catherine’s claws are back out, and we love to see it.

The Police Are Closing In
Flash-forward again. Catherine opens the door to a detective—the same one who interrogated Brett. He’s got questions. Which car did she take to the garden party? Did she come home with Tucker? Why is her bracelet at a gas station miles away?

She tries to act casual but is clearly rattled. When she’s brought into the station, things get worse. A witness—the gas station attendant—starts talking, mentioning the bracelet, the pills, and even Bertie. He knows too much. And just when things can’t get more intense… Tucker swoops in to save the day. But his helpfulness may backfire when he suggests they check security footage.

Catherine realizes he doctored the footage. Yes, she did tell him everything. Their bond is toxic but strangely loyal. For now.

Alice’s Redemption (and Peyton’s Power Move)
Alice’s classroom is a battlefield. Peyton, the student who got her in hot water before, is back and now running the court of public opinion. He challenges her curriculum, pushes back—but Alice holds her own. Her solution? All A’s for the semester—if they show up. Risky? Absolutely. But it flips the energy in the room.

Later, the principal surprises her with good news: Peyton’s mom loved it. Alice is not only safe—she’s in demand.

Brett + Alice = Slow Burn Romance of the Year?
After Catherine and Bertie enlighten a shocked Alice to the fact that Brett isn't mad because she took him for granted, he is upset because he is in love with her, Alice visits Brett’s shop and helps him track down the carburetor—turns out, it was right there all along. Their banter returns, and the chemistry is undeniable. She jokes about his Taco Bell cheating, he confesses to crying on her birthday. It’s soft, honest, and long overdue.

She says she can’t be more. He asks if it was that obvious. It’s heartbreaking, but also hopeful. She suggests a Taco Bell run. He smiles. The romance isn’t dead—it’s just slow-cooked.

Final Twists & Flourishes
At the garden center, everyone is vibing again—sort of. As Tucker's ever so fitting voiceover narrates, we see Joel kissing Bertie goodbye but Misty, his wife, is watching from her car. Bertie's life is about to get a lot harder, hasn't she learned?? Cricket leaves Brett’s claiming she misses her bed. He lets her go without a fight. Alice is offered more paid work by the principal—her comeback is real. Catherine finally beats Pierce at his own game.

And then—Gary walks into a coffee shop. Alive....So... who did they bury?

"Germination" is a turning point. It plants the stakes for the final stretch of the season with revelations, emotional reckonings, and some truly delicious drama. The metaphors are rich, the secrets are rotting under the surface, and the characters are finally showing us who they are—and who they want to become.

This episode manages to juggle timelines, emotional arcs, voiceovers, and more than one twisted relationship with remarkable ease. It’s juicy. It’s fast-paced. It’s darkly funny. And it's setting the stage for a hell of a finale.
