Introduction :
This series finale is probably one of the best endings of a tv series in recent times I've seen, it had everything action, drama and a whole lot of emotion. The writers simply put nailed this episode. This episode was the show's last hurrah and it delivered in its final battle. I liked that Smallville didn't feel as empty during the last two episodes of the show as we witnessed the towns residents panic at the end of Episode 9 last week, the show definitely saved up some of its budget to deliver all of the explosions and the damage done to the Smallville town centre for its longest and final action sequence.
Doomsday
The newly mutated Doomsday and Superman continued their battle this week as Superman was faced with his mortality during the episode and the idea of having to accept letting his sons help. Clark has had to carry the weight of who he is alone for most his life so sharing that load was very difficult for him. Superman eventually relented and let them help after his argument with Lois, the boys assisting him managed to give John Henry enough time to use his hammer to incapacitate Doomsday allowing Superman to fly him into the sun permanently killing Doomsday. Doomsday on the show was such a sad tragic figure, his entire life on the alternate earth flashed before his eyes as he died for the final time as Superman flew him into the sun.
Lex
The first half of the episode continued the show's great action packed streak as Lex and Superman went at it in the sky, after Lex's plan A (Doomsday) failed. This episode showed just how truly unhinged Lex is as he set Doomsday loose on Smallville and watched sadistically from the sky, hoping Doomsday would kill Superman again. When Superman took Doomsday away from Smallville Lex saw this as an opportunity to go after his now vulnerable archnemesis Lois Lane but Lois was ready for him.
Lex does not love anybody at all, he is selfish. Lex trying to kill Amanda for seeing who he truly was and then trying to kill Jordan (a teenage boy) , took the cake. Watching Superman return and go all out on Lex after a season of holding back was so satisfying. Superman punched Lex so hard it destroyed his super suit ( John Henry’s stolen suit to be accurate). It's truly sad to bid farewell to one of the most visually striking shows on American network television.Superman doesn't kill Lex after he wins their fight but one year later Lex loses his criminal case and he ends up being taken back to prison but this time around things have changed and Bruno Manheim is now the big boss ready to make Lex's life in jail hell.
One year later :
During the finale's opening we learn that John Henry and Lana's are still hanging out and their “friendly date” in a bar is interrupted by Doomsday and Superman's fight. This leads to the setting of the first scene after the one year later time jump with John Henry and Lana both having their happy ending (wedding) . John started off the series heart broken over his wife's death so it was good to see him finally find happiness and Lana started the show happily married and ended up divorced. Lois marrying them was a nice choice because of her frienships with both of them.
I'm glad that the show, after playing with fans all season long, finally delivered ( speaking for myself ) the couple I’ve wanted to see. I wish this season had followed up more on showing us John Henry and Lana actually dating but I'm glad we got to see them get married and be happy when the show jumped a year forward. Chrissy and Kyle are also expecting a second child during that time. I'm glad Lana and Kyle made peace and they are now one big happy blended family. John Henry and Natalie also felt like they both found their home on this earth in the time jump which was great.
Sarah Cushing returned to Smallville for her mother’s wedding after leaving one year prior. Sarah avoiding the barn because she felt it was cursed was pretty funny (she always said that during the show) but we also got a nice final scene between Jordan and Sarah. I liked how open ended the show felt and we never actually got confirmation that the boys ended up with Sarah and Candice, but fans can believe that if they want since they didn't confirm the names of their future wives. Jon and Jordan's wives' older actresses definitely looked like older versions of Candice and Sarah though.
Flash forward :
We also got to see older Lois, Clark, Jon and Jordan and learn that Superman adjusted to helping people in a different way beyond using his powers. The episode got quite emotional when we learned that years later when both of them were much older and now grandparents Lois’s cancer came back and Clark stood by her through that until she passed. Clark got himself an emotional support dog called Krypto but his heart eventually gave out in the same spot his father Jonathan Kent died but Kyle was around so he didn’t die there on the road. Clark ultimately passed away in the Kent's farm house and he joined Lois in the afterlife. I loved that we saw Clark walk around the house saying goodbye to all of the people in his life and we even saw Lex Luthor one final time and learned that Clark forgave Lex in true Superman fashion. The final scene in this final montage was my favorite, Lois standing outside the farm house's front door in her red dress ( one of her most iconic looks in this series ) waiting for Clark was beautiful. Clark and Lois being the final scene of the show was perfect.
Other Thoughts :
1.David Giuntoli (from Grimm) who is Bitsie's husband looks like he could be Tyler Hoechlin's brother lol , so seeing him portray adult Jon was perfect casting.
2.I wish we got clearer shots of Natalie, John Henry, Jordan and Jon’s new supersuits. The brief shots of the suits were great but part of me is sad we won't get to see those more.
3.I would be happy with a Fraternals spinoff personally as would most fans, if you're listening CW executives lol.
4.This show is a great love letter to Superman and Lois's iconic romantic relationship. Clark and Lois don't need relationship drama to work as a couple and this show proved that fact. They are truly one of the greatest love stories ever told.
Conclusion
I can't think of how they could have ended this show any better than they did dealing with budget cuts. The ending was bittersweet and emotional but this is my favorite Arrowverse ending. The Arrowverse ended on a high note.
