Evil: Fear of the End Review: A Lackluster Ending to a Stellar Series

One of the best series on television/streaming has ended and I am left feeling empty inside. The entire buildup of the season was hindered on the meeting of the evil families known as “The 60” and this episode we were promised a meeting of Evil to end all Evil. Instead we were treated to a Zoom team meeting and the “Evil that came to New York” felt like a clown.

The episode opens with Kristen having a session with her new clients in her new garage office, Ben is at his new corporate job and is given a cryptic message to “run” and David is getting ready to leave the Church but not without a final prayer and a final hilarious visit from “Demon Kristen.” David meets up with his new handler who explains that they have a plan to stop “The 60” and also casually informs David that his friends are in danger.

Leland visits Kristen pretending to be a patient and she tasers him many times until David and Ben arrive to assist. David takes an unconscious Leland back home and uses the opportunity to take a picture of the painting which has a drawing of a woman who bares a striking resemblance to Kristen - of course David calls the Entity with this latest development. However, the Entity has put their plan in motion infiltrating the party planning company that Leland and the Evil demon hired to stage “The 60” meeting at the Church. Good thing Sister Andrea was already ahead of them and warned David that it was a setup. No one meets in person anymore apparently and it was a trap to kill The Entity. Due to their stubbornness, sixteen men were killed with poisonous gas.

Also, because David saved his handler he is allowed to continue the assessor program but in Rome. When he brings the idea to Ben and Kristen they decline. Later that night in bed, Kristen looks in on her doppleganger who gives her the incentive to take the chance in Rome. Leland and the Evil are holding a casting call for a “screaming girl” and somehow Sister Andrea was made aware and shows up fearless. The Evil demon tries to intimidate her but she is not moved in the slightest. The Evil lets Leland know that he has protected Kristen for too long and it's time to strike.

When we return to the Team who are burning old files, we also get to see the girls again who never listen and are playing a game on the VR headsets that apparently show you the future. They see Leland kill Kristen. When the team investigates, they each see their future - Ben’s sister is dying, Kristen has her children taken away from CPS and David is killed by the demon with no vision of Heaven. All of this is supposed to happen when the clock finishes its countdown in 23 hours. David, Kristen and Ben are discussing what they saw when a group of adults are outside the house wearing the headsets.

Apparently, they all have to find the tunnel to Hell in Kristen’s basement to save their loved ones. Once again due to some quick IT work from Ben, they piece together that the “The 60” are behind the headsets and are using technology to put evil inside people's brains. This plan is later confirmed when we see “The 60” meet at their zoom meeting. The scene was comical but ultimately made no sense as to who the families are and their goal for Kristen and the baby. All we learned is that Leland was out of time and had to make his move on Kristen. He shows up later that night to kill Kristen but she was waiting for him. She gets the drop on him and before she can kill him Ben and David stop her.

Meanwhile the girls stayed up on the headsets to see what would happen when the clock ran out and it was just an ad for the game, which they plan to buy using Kristen’s credit card. Sometimes, they can truly be frustrating. The overtalking each other and yelling ran a bit stale for me.

The episode concludes with Leland being taken to Sister Andrea at her new Church and is locked away in the demon cupboard. We have no idea what happened to the big scary “evil that came to New York” nor Ben’s demon and Kristen moved to Rome with David but baby Tommy is again a demon. So many unanswered questions and maybe the showrunners were hopeful for another season, leaving that door open but I felt such a letdown. I wanted someone on the team to acknowledge the demons were real. Kristen saw it through Tommy but is ignoring it again. I am sure Ben’s Jin is not gone and David and Kristen have not addressed their romantic feelings. Like I said, so many unanswered questions that are left to our imagination. I hate to see it.
