Emperor of Ocean Park - Chapter Three - Review: Excelsior, Excelsior

Chapter 3 of "Emperor of Ocean Park" continued to unravel the intricate web of secrets, suspicions, and drama that has kept viewers hooked since the premiere. This episode, packed with the mystery and tense confrontations, deepened the viewer’s understanding of the characters and propelled the plot forward in unexpected ways.

The episode opens with Talcott struggling to make sense of how his father’s chess pawn mysteriously ended up in his classroom. As he investigates, he's followed by McDermott, whose motivations remain murky. Their interactions are fraught with tension, especially when McDermott hands Talcott his card, urging him to call when he's ready to talk about the arrangements, adding an air of urgency and danger since Talcott still has no idea what the arrangements are.

Flashbacks are a critical narrative device in "Emperor of Ocean Park," and they play a crucial role in this episode, particularly those involving Mariah. Her past triumphs and struggles as a journalist are juxtaposed against her present-day efforts to find out information from the man who was arrested for killing Father Brown. The flashbacks reveal Mariah's award-winning journalism career, highlighting a pivotal moment when she, along with her colleague Rachel, exposed a major corruption scandal, earning her a Pulitzer Prize. However, her career hit a downturn with the rise of blogging, leading to a poignant scene where she turned to her father for help, only to feel as though her father was demeaning her abilities.

She felt frustrated and resistant when her father tried to get her a job at Fox News. She was adamant about her identity as a journalist, not a newscaster, and didn't want to compromise her career aspirations. Given how career-driven Mariah was, it's intriguing that she decided to become a stay-at-home mom. This decision must be especially difficult for her, considering her father had warned her against marrying Howard, saying it would harm her career. Mariah had accused her father of being petty, leading to a full-blown argument.

In the present, Mariah is determined and resourceful. She convinces her husband to pay the retainer for Sharik Deveaux’s lawyer, the man who the police suspect murdered Father Brown, and she also manipulates the church secretary with a sizeable donation, in order to sneak into Father Brown's office to gather clues. These scenes showcase her relentless pursuit of the truth and the lengths she's willing to go to for justice.

Kimmer's subplot adds another layer of complexity. Her focus on securing a federal bench nomination creates tension between her and Talcott. His growing suspicion of her fidelity leads him to track her movements, highlighting the cracks in their relationship.

The episode takes a dramatic turn when Tal and Mariah visit his late father's house in Martha's Vineyard, only to find it ransacked. This discovery pushes Tal closer to the truth about the mysterious "arrangements" mentioned in the judge's letter, which references the cryptic phrase "excelsior, excelsior." The break-in was one of two suspicious incidents during the Martha's Vineyard trip. While on the ferry to the island, Tal noticed Maxine from the roller rink. He knows it is no coincidence, especially with all of the mysterious events that had unfolded since his father's passing.

As the pieces start to slowly come together, Tal and Mariah suspect that the Lisa that McDermott and Ziegler keep mentioning as the link to the arrangements, is a woman connected to Father Brown. Mariah found the name Lisa written in Father Brown's datebook several times. She believes that this woman might hold the key to the arrangements. Tal finally believes that Mariah is onto something, and agrees to help with her investigation. Their decision to work together marks a significant shift in their relationship and sets the stage for further collaboration.

The climax of the episode is both shocking and thrilling. Talcott arranges a meeting with McDermott, to share what he has discovered about the arrangements. However, the meeting with McDermott ends in disaster when the red sedan, meant to be their rendezvous point, explodes with McDermott inside. This cliffhanger leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, eager to see how Talcott will navigate the dangers that lie ahead.

Overall, Episode 3 of "Emperor of Ocean Park" masterfully blends character development with plot progression. The flashbacks provide rich backstory, making the present-day stakes feel even higher. With each revelation, the show deepens its mystery, ensuring viewers will return for more. If you haven't started watching yet, now's the time to dive into this gripping series.
