And They’re Off… Exciting New Docuseries: Champions: Full Gallop Hits the Screen

Away from analysing the form and assessing the best betting offers, horse racing fans may wish to add a new item to their to-do list - ensuring they allocate the time to settle down in front of the TV for one of the most exciting horse racing TV series in years.

Premiering on Friday, 19th of June, and already available for streaming on ITVX, Champions: Full Gallop is set to capture the heart and soul of National Hunt racing like never before over its six-episode duration.

Behind the Scenes of the Jumping Game

Champions: Full Gallop is no ordinary sports documentary. It’s a deep dive into the 2023-24 jumps season, showcasing the highs and lows of the sport from an insider’s perspective - giving fans a gripping insight into what it takes to prepare a horse for their shot at glory.

Those tuning in will enjoy intimate access to the lives of top jockeys like Harry Cobden, Nico de Boinville, and Bryony Frost, along with legendary trainers such as Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls. And it’s not just about the people; the series will also shine a light on the majestic horses that make this sport so special.

This docuseries is ITV’s answer to the success of shows like Drive to Survive (Formula 1) and All or Nothing (football). Just as those series have given fans a behind-the-scenes look at their favourite sports, Champions: Full Gallop aims to do the same for jump racing. Unlike those series, Champions: Full Gallop is available on free-to-air TV, making it accessible to a wider audience than sports docuseries exclusive to streaming platforms.

What’s on the Agenda?

The first episode kicks off with the excitement of the Boxing Day meeting at Kempton, headlined by the historic King George VI Chase - one of the most prestigious events of the jumps season. Expect to see big-name star horses like Shishkin and Bravemansgame in action, together with Shark Hanlon’s Hewick, a small but mighty horse from Ireland. The episode will also spotlight the beloved Frodon and his heartwarming relationship with his jockey, Bryony Frost.

Following up, episode two will dive into the fierce competition for the Champion Jockey title. Jockey Sean Bowen held the lead, but Harry Cobden was hot on his heels. Who would ultimately come out on top?

Stars of the Show

The series wouldn’t be the same (and may not even exist) without its star-studded cast. Paul Nicholls, a 14-time Champion Trainer, is central to the action, and his presence alone is likely to serve as a significant draw. “We would never have made this show if it wasn’t for Paul Nicholls,” says Mel Leach of South Shore Productions.

Jockeys like “Hollywood” Harry Cobden bring their charm and wit to the screen, offering viewers a dose of humour to accompany the more serious side of the sport. Alongside Cobden, other notable figures, such as multiple Grade 1 winner Nico de Boinville, offer great value. And let’s not forget the horses themselves, with the beautiful equine athletes rightly enjoying their share of screen time.

Why It Matters

In a time when racing faces it's share of challenges, including dwindling attendance and falling betting turnover, Champions: Full Gallop could be just the boost the sport needs. At the very least, the series offers a chance to reconnect with old fans and attract new ones by showcasing the grit, glory, and glamour of jump racing and highlighting the love and regard in which the horses are held.

Whether you are a lifelong racing fan or just curious about what goes on behind the scenes, Champions: Full Gallop promises to be a captivating and entertaining watch. Enjoy the ride!
