According to reports, Netflix is currently in the planning stages to live stream major sports from around the world in one of the streaming giant’s biggest updates in years.
For the first time in its history, it appears as though Netflix will start by streaming a live golf tournament involving celebrities in certain regions. It comes shortly after Netflix was denied the rights to stream the Formula One Grand Prix. Take a closer look right here.
Are live sports really coming to Netflix?
Yes, it seems live sports will soon be available to stream via your Netflix account, and you will be able to watch as the action unfolds from your smartphone, tablet, smart TV, laptop, or desktop computer, provided you have a stable Wi-Fi/internet connection.
Netflix has previously been in talks with major organisations from the sporting world to stream things like cycling competitions, World Tennis Association (WTA) tennis events, Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) events, the World Surf League, and other major sporting events. However, upon failing to reach an agreement on a price each time, none of these ventures have come to fruition.
If it goes ahead, the upcoming live-streamed celebrity golf tournament will include appearances from the cast of Netflix’s hit docuseries ‘Drive to Survive’ and the cast from a golf-inspired reality television series called ‘Full Swing.’
Netflix’s biggest rival, Amazon Prime Video, has been streaming such events for several years now, and Netflix is just playing catch-up. Netflix subscribers have also been calling for them to live-stream today’s biggest fixtures and events from the English Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, the NFL, the NHL, the NBA, the MLA, MLS, Italy’s Serie A, and others.
Is Netflix Games still available?
Yes. Netflix Games is still available, but this service has been nowhere near as successful as they would have liked it to be. If you want to play high-end, graphically demanding video games, or play slots, roulette, or blackjack games at a casino online in Poland, then you would be better off playing anywhere but Netflix Games. The company has developed over 60 games, and only a few have been labelled by players and critics as being any good.
Some of their hit titles include Stranger Things 3: The Game, Stranger Things: 1984, Asphalt Xtreme, Bowling Bawlers, and Desta: The Memories Between. In short, this product has failed, and Netflix will be hoping that their live sports streaming service will be far more successful.
What are the best sports movies and docu series on Netflix?
While you’re waiting for live sports to arrive on Netflix, why not check out some of these hit sports-themed movies and docuseries in the meantime? Netflix made some of this content, and the rest was made by independent studios. Apart from Formula One: Drive to Survive, others include the following:● Break Point (docuseries)
● Last Chance U (docuseries)
● FIFA Uncovered (docuseries)
● Cheer (docuseries)
● Home Game (docuseries)
● We Are: The Brooklyn Saints (docuseries)
● Human Playground (docuseries)
● Basketball or Nothing (docuseries)
● El Caso Figo (docuseries)
● Sunderland 'till I Die (docuseries)
● Hustle (movie)
● 83 (movie)
● Home Team (movie)
● Jungleland (movie)
● I, Tonya (movie)
● Creed II (movie)
If that’s not enough to keep you going, you may also like to try United, The Fighter, Warrior, Bruised, Icarus, Molly’s Game, Overcomer, and Ali. The Netflix Originals (docuseries and movies that Netflix has created) will always be on Netflix. However, the other sports-inspired docu series and movies mentioned above that Netflix didn’t make are usually only on Netflix for a certain amount of time. These ones are also only available to watch in certain regions.
Final note
Live-streamed sports arriving on Netflix is still not guaranteed. However, talks are in place between the streaming giant, major sports organisations and governing bodies to make this possible.
We could potentially start seeing live sports on Netflix within the next few months, or we may have to wait until 2024/25.
