Killing Eve - Oh Goodie, I'm the Winner – Review: Upping the Body Count

The show begins cleaning house with just two unaired episodes left for Killing Eve. In the latest episode, "Oh Goodie, I'm the Winner," the body count increases with three significant deaths/executions in this episode. The show has started tying up all the straggling loose plot and character threads, odds, and ends that the show has multiplied this whole season. That some more major characters will probably meet their ends in the next two episodes is a given. The only revelation left for the finale is who will be the last left standing and how much of any final confrontation will turn out to be.

Of the three deaths in this episode, the least important is clearly Pam (Anjana Vasan)'s first official assignment for the Twelve. Her target is the unsuspecting Fernanda (Monica Lopera), Helene's ex-lover. However, Pam gets her first bit of complexity when she questions the mission because Fernanda is nice to her. Even if Pam is being set up as someone able to break the cycle of assassin grooming and walk away from the vocation, her prominent placement in the final season's limited screen time continues to be an investment with little chance of payoff.

The next death continues the show's de-characterization of Eve (Sandra Oh). Having her coldly shoot and kill Lars/Johan (Ingvar Sigurdsson) in front of Carolyn (Fiona Shaw), even after the latter had told her he had the identity of the real head of the Twelve they both were after, was petty and petulant. If she did it to show she didn't care or punish Carolyn for an assumed betrayal, it was just another step in destroying the character the show seems intent on this season. The only redeeming feature here was yet another iconic Fiona Shaw as Carolyn moment when Carolyn pretended to commune with the trees as she tried to delay Eve.

Eve takes the wounded Villanelle to Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) and Pam's hotel to have Pam remove the arrow from Villanelle's back. How Eve knew where they were is unclear. Maybe she figured it out from Konstantin's Facebook posts of his seaside vacation. That plot hole aside, the anticlimactic arrow injury gives viewers what's been sorely lacking this season: scenes between Eve and Villanelle. A new assassin, Gunn (Marie-Sophie Ferdane), enters the mix, sent by Helene (Camille Cottin) to shoot that arrow into Villanelle's back.

As she slowly recovers, Villanelle shares another awkward encounter with Eve on yet another bridge that ends with them walking away from one another like the finale in season three. However, this time, Villanelle tells Eve to stay away and leaves her behind. They go their separate ways, with Villanelle resuming her quest for revenge on Helene. Villanelle gives the episode its best moment when she dispatches Helene in front of a shocked Eve, who rushed to Helene to tell her about Lars' death. Easily this is the truest to form Comer has been as Villanelle all season, so it was not surprising she would seek out Gunn's location following her execution of Helene.

The deaths to come in the final episodes may not be unexpected; the intrigue will come in seeing if there is any hope for the show to bring its disjointed storyline and show to a satisfying conclusion.
