It's been a long journey, but the TV adaptation of "Y The Last Man" is finally here and I have to say that the first episode really impressed me. I have to be honest, I wasn't familiar with the source material (the comics), so for me, it was like stepping into uncharted territory. I did some research and the premise of the story is actually fascinating: all of the sudden, every human being with a Y chromosome dies. Pretty bleak, right? But also, super interesting.
Here's the twist tough: not everyone with a Y chromosome dies. Yorick, the protagonist of the show, does not. The "why" of it all should be (and it is in some way) the most important question to answer, but the pilot covers so much more than that; I feel like the show would like to tackle what it means to live in a world where only women are part of the planet and what it means in terms of power, society, culture, life experience. Because one thing that made me realize that this is a show about that is the female characters in it.
Yes, Yorick is the center of the action, because he's the only cisgender man who survives (key word: cisgender!), but it's the women around him that move the story forward, the ones he knows and the ones he doesn't know yet. His mother, congresswoman Jennifer Brown, played by the legend Diane Lane. I'm so happy to finally see her shine in a role that puts her powerful acting in motion. I would vote for her if she ran tomorrow. Also, more Diane Lane in everything please; his sister Hero (what a wonderful name!), who is a EMT in New York, struggles with addiction and I feel like she will potentially become my favorite character; Agent 355 is a badass and I love her already and I know she's going to be one of the best parts of the show and I can't wait to see her interact with Yorick; and Kimberly, the Presiden't daughter and an Ivanka Trump type of character. I am sure she will be one of the antagonists of the show, although I don't think you can actually talk about villains in a world like this. Even the best people can question their own morality in times of despair and I think every character on the show will have to do that at some point.
I am excited to see what the other two episodes bring, given that the first one deals with what happens the day before the apocalyptic event. Also, I felt bad for Yorick and his failed marriage proposal. He put his heart into it and he's one of those characters that other people around him do not take seriously enough and I'll be waiting for him to prove them wrong. And maybe witness some incredible women save the world along the way.
