Black Lightning - The Book of Markovia: Chapter One - Review

Subtitle: Blessings and Curses Reborn

Crisis is over and Black Lightning now shares the same Earth as the rest of the current heroes of the Arrowverse.

Jefferson and Jennifer return from their dimensional travels.

I was wondering if we'd be seeing a bunch of changes in the aftermath of Crisis, but I didn't recognize any...unless you count Brandon's instability. I'd assumed second generation meta's weren't unstable.

If you saw changes I missed please mention them in the comments section.

The bulk of the episode seemed mostly dedicated to reestablishing the characters were before the start of Crisis on Infinite Earths

Lynne is more out of control than when we last saw her. She'd made a new batch of her “non-addictive” “meds” but she drops it when Jennifer startles her. Whoops.

I know I should be more sympathetic, but the hubris of thinking she could enhance her mind chemically without any consequences kind of negates my sympathies.

But her confrontation with Jefferson in the bathroom was intense! Kudos to Christine Adams.

Gambi is, as always, watching over the Pierce family. But it looks like he's got another meta to take care of.

The Pod-Kid, TC, whom he met before the break, tracks Gambi down. The ASA's door to door hunt for metas has him terrified.

I'm not quite sure where this relationship is headed in the long term, but I think it might be fun to watch it unfold.

I did love TC's reaction to the fact that Gambi builds suits for metas.

Jennifer returned from her time between dimensions intent on killing Odell.

It seems like she completely forgot the context of the speech she gave herselves just before Earth 1, 2 and 72 were initially destroyed. (AKA 'the previous episode')

Well, at least she was willing to listen when Jefferson pointed out the problem with Odell's suit and that her mother was the priority.

There are moments when I am so anxious for Jennifer to mature, but I'll accept baby steps like this.

Odell isn't too happy wit the fact that Jennifer has cut him off. Apparently, he doesn't have a full appreciation for how strong Jennifer's powers are, because she totally owned the power dampening collar!

Unfortunately, her move against Odell was about as thought out as us old folks expect from an emotional teen.

Odell, older, wiser, and more experienced, didn't attend that meeting with Jennifer in person. He sent a hologram. Smart.

Pay attention Jennifer. Start Thinking.

Anissa finally had that conversation with her father. She needs for him to finally accept that she's an adult and respect her position as a resistance leader.

I like that he's finally making a concerted effort. I especially liked that he acknowledged, during the escape, that she was right.

This episode didn't have me on the edge of my seat but, I thought it was a good return. It's Chapter One of The Book of Markovia.

I'm still waiting to see how this book ties into the Markovians and their goals. I'm hoping that the Markovians become something more than a McGuffin to this story.

What did you think about this episode?
