Scene Of The Week - November 17, 2019 + POLL

Nov 17, 2019

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS, "Goodnight", November 14, 2019, Actors: Romany Malco, Chandler Riggs and more, The Scene: Rome's friends help him fill in his mother's grave
Justyna:
There were no words spoken during this scene. It was a quiet and short moment, but also beautiful, emotional and the best one from the hour. Rome has been through so much already and his mother's unexpected death hits him even harder under the circumstances. He gives a wonderful speech during her funeral, it's a sudden goodbye and he isn't given much time to process his loss with everything happening so fast around him. When he stays behind to fill in his mother's grave it's a chance to finally stop for a moment, to do something for her without thinking or planning. He doesn't ask for any help, but his loved ones show up for him without hesitation. First it's his brother, who stands by him and joins in this small tribute for their mom and then his family of choice, his other brothers - Gary, Eddie and PJ - join in. It's such a brief part, but it's also the first time that I actually felt and liked the fact that PJ is Jon's son. I'm not a big fan of this writing choice, but in this particular moment it seemed like he's exactly where his father would have been and I really appreciated his presence. This show often excels at the emotional montages and simple friendship moments like this one. Kudos!

ALL AMERICAN, "Speak Ya Clout", October 14, 2019, Actors: Greta Onieogou, Elvis Nolasco, The Scene: Layla and her father talk about her depression
Jennifer:
Layla's struggle with depression has been building all season and has resulted in her distancing herself from the people she's closest to as they struggle to figure out how to help her. While her angrily lashing out at everyone is more dynamic, my favorite scene is the one she shared with her father at the end of the latest episode. Layla has been dealing with her issues by denying them, and has warded off everyone who tried to make her confront them. But there is finally a moment of quiet vulnerability as her father tells her that her mother also had depression and commits to going to therapy with her. It grounds the storyline in the same way Olivia meeting with her sponsor did last season, and it similarly gives Layla something she needs. Olivia needed her family to be involved in her sobriety; now Layla needs her father to help her through her therapy.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY, "Final Girl", November 13, 2019, Actors: Finn Wittrock and more
The Scene: Bobby leaves the camp
Klutzy girl:
Bobby leaves the camp after meeting his family and they watch him depart. It was a rare happy ending for the show, and it perfectly capped off one of my favorite seasons.

BATWOMAN, "I'll Be Judge, I'll Be Jury", November 10, 2019, Actors: Ruby Rose, Jim Pirri, Dougray Scott, The Scene: Batwoman battles Executioner
DJRiter:
Batwoman battles Executioner and saves Jacob and herself. In one of the best action sequences of the entire series the writers, producers etc FINALLY let Batwoman be Batwoman! She first battles the Executioner in the courtroom then must match wits with her father to convince him they were on the same side. Then, she must use all her Batwoman skills to keep them both alive when the deceased Executioner turns the courtroom into a gas chamber. Rose finally got to channel the Batwoman we met and was a highlight in the lackluster Elseworlds crossover. She exhibited the strength of the character physically, mentally and emotionally. All I can say is it’s about time they let Batwoman be Batwoman.

EVIL, "Vatican III", November 14, 2019, Actors: Katja Herbers and more, The Scene: Kristen finds the burial site
Laura B:
There was something about the stark simplicity of the scene, the way that the two roads crossed only to lead to this small plot of grass where it was easy to see the graves of all the serial killer's victims, as Kristen just stood there before making a call to Meera that just felt like the most devastating scene in the entire episode. That's not to say that the episode wasn't filled with classic horror thrills to boot and build towards its Alias & Da Vinci Code-like mythology, but those things had an element of fun or intrigue, where this was just so heartrendingly grounded in reality. Also picked by Diana

GREY'S ANATOMY, "My Shot", November 14, 2019, Actors: Ellen Pompeo, Mike McColl, The Scene: Meredith confronts the man responsible for Derek's death
Diana: Meredith confronts the man who killed Derek. A masterful performance by Ellen Pompeo, who dropped all of her anger against that man. It was a very intense moment in one of the most emotional episodes of Grey's Anatomy.
Luana: Talk about karma, not only it was great that she got to say what she needed to say but the fact that he fell right then and there, yes it was way too coincidental, and it will probably be added to the legend of Meredith Grey as that time she killed someone with her mind or something like that, but it does seem like both her and Amelia got some karmic justice.
Marko: A masterful performance of Ellen Pompeo. Being judged by someone is never funny, it being done by the lazy doctor who is responsible for your partner's death must be miserable. Mer held up for so long, but she couldn’t anymore. In a perfect display of pain and anger she delivered another Meredith moment for Grey‘s Anatomy‘s Hall of Fame.
Jamie: Meredith yells at the doctor. This was such a great scene. It was like Meredith unleashed all of her frustrations on this guy. And rightfully so. The man who killed her husband due to negligence is now responsible for her career. Personally, I find what Meredith did not nearly as bad as what this guy did. The only thing I didn't like was that he had a seizure right after. I felt like it took some of the impact of the moment away.

HAWAII FIVE-0, "Ne'e aku, ne'e mai ke one o Punahoa", November 15, 2019, Actors: Alex O'Loughlin, Scott Caan, The Scene: Steve calls Danny
Klutzy girl:
Steve calls Danny to tell him he's not doing okay after his mother's death. I hadn't liked that this was a Danny-less hour in the wake of everything that happened last week but I'm glad he left Steve messages. Steve reaching out to Danny made me feel a whole lot better and I'm sure he felt the same. Excited to see where this goes from here!

HIS DARK MATERIALS, "The Idea of North", November 10, 2019, Actors: Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson, Ariyon Bakare, The Scenes: Lyra learns the truth about her father & Lord Boreal goes to our world
Justyna: I certainly expected to see many sides of Mrs Coulter and her relationship with Lyra from their first meeting on the show. But using her daemon to viciously attack and torture Lyra? I did not see this one coming. It was disturbing and shocking to watch, left me feeling very much against Mrs Coulter, regardless of any potential reasons behind all of her actions. Also, there's just so many important things to mention about this moment. The viewers witness exactly how powerful is the bond between daemons and their humans, not just emotional, but a physical connection that leaves them vulnerable to each other's pain. Pan is also seen to change his forms during the attack, attempting to fight back against the golden monkey. Pan isn't the only one who tries to stop Mrs Coulter, Lyra does her best to reason with her attacker. She hopes that this isn't who Coulter truly is, but when all her screams fail to change her mind, Lyra mentions her uncle as someone who won't allow anyone to hurt her like this. That's when Mrs Coulter really loses control, she lets her anger take over and accidentally reveals to Lyra that Lord Asriel is actually her father. The truth is what finally stops the attack, there's a very different kind of pain that hits Lyra in this moment. And suddenly everything makes sense. Or maybe nothing at all. There's definitely another lie that we hear about Lyra's mother but I'm sure we'll get back to this aspect later. For now, it's clear that Mrs Coulter is especially angry with Asriel and perhaps she's taking it out on Lyra in a way. Both Dafne Keen and Ruth Wilson are wonderful in this moment. Excellent work by both actresses who manage to portray all the complicated emotions that their characters are struggling with. That part where they end up on the other side of the door is remarkably done. Lyra feels lost and looks at her compass for guidance, for the first time getting an answer, even though she doesn't realize it. Coulter, on the other hand, seems to be fighting off her own feelings, wiping away tears that she never expected. I'm glad that this father reveal happened this early in the series. I'd be very interested to see how this will affect the relationship between Lyra and Asriel, and also to have Asriel and Mrs Coulter meet. Those would certainly be great moments worth waiting for. I'm really enjoying the series so far. Kudos!
Milo: Lord Boreal goes to our world. Fans of Phillip Pullman's books were not expecting the introduction of parallel worlds so early on in the series so to see Lord Boreal make the jump to an Earth without daemons that looked very much like our own was exciting and unexpected. It adds an extra unknown dynamic that keeps things in play - and sets up the second book even earlier, potentially allowing fan-favourite character Will to show up before the second season. Such a simple scene creates a whole host of 'what if' questions that represent the biggest and most exciting divergence from the books yet, whilst never detracting from Lyra's story.

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, "I Want to Be Free", November 14, 2019, Actors: Viola Davis and more, The Scene: The end reveal
Marko:
Closing moments. The whole episode, probably season, worked towards this reveal. And while I am sure there is more behind this story the setup to Annalise faking her death was a thrilling moment, setting the midseason finale up properly.

LEGACIES, "Screw Endgame", November 14, 2019, Actors: Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Nick Fink and more, The Scenes: Hope and Lizzie win the game & The Clarke reveal
Luana: Hope and Lizzie win the game. Subtlety clearly wasn't what they were going for, but I'm still glad they decided to go this route. They all deserve better than to have just one purpose and being unable to escape it no matter what. I hope they can maybe be a little better at handling it in the future, this seemed a little too cheap, but the message was still good.
Marko: The Clarke reveal. I applaud Julie Plec and her fellow writers for still being able to shock me to the core. While it was obvious that something was off with Fumbledore, him being Clarke was certainly not what I was expecting. Kudos for the execution.

NEW AMSTERDAM, "What the Heart Wants", November 12, 2019, Actors: Ryan Eggold, Elizabeth A. Davis, The Scene: Max convinces his patient to say goodbye to her stillborn child
DJRiter:
Max convinces distraught young mother to say goodbye to her stillborn child. This season this show continues to deliver one exceptional episode after another and this week was no exception. The scene of a still grieving Max helping a newly grieving young mother who’d just lost her infant child and refuses to look at the baby, by telling her she can’t say goodbye until she says hello. Eggold has been doing amazing work this season yet this was one of his finest scenes this season as he shows Max setting aside or perhaps coming to terms with his own grief in order to help a patient.

SUPERGIRL, "Confidence Women", November 10, 2019, Actors: Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh
The Scene: Supergirl hears Alex’s call for help
DJRiter:
Despite Lena’s best efforts to block Alex’s distress signal from inside the DEO reaching Supergirl, the Girl of Steel still heard her sister yell her name and raced across the city to save her. This just proved again that all the advanced technical machinations in the world are not stronger than the bond between the Danvers Sisters.

SUPERNATURAL, "Proverbs 17:3", November 14, 2019, Actors: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Anna Grace Barlow, The Scene: Lilith returns
Klutzy girl:
I had thought for a minute or so that the girl was actually a banshee and didn't see the reveal - which was perfect and shocking - coming. Looking forward to seeing where this leads the rest of the season.

THE GOOD PLACE, "The Funerals to End All Funerals", November 14, 2019, Actors: D'Arcy Carden, Maya Rudolph and more, The Scene: Janets choose their side
Jennifer: There was a lot to love in an episode that felt like it was propelling the show forward after some unfortunate stagnation with the uneven new experiment. But the best part, and possibly the thing that will always justify the series no matter how this thing ends, is all the Janets popping into the Judge's chambers in a big group superhero shot, complete with Disco!Janet for some reason. Please, more Disco!Janet before the show is over.
Luana: Good and bad Janets revolt.

THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, "Happy Trails", November 15, 2019, Actors: Rufus Sewell, Quinn Lord, The Scene: John Smith confronts alt-Thomas about going to war
Laura B:
John Smith tells alt-Thomas that going to war to be honorable is all BS. It was always hard to say what John would ever do if he was able to reach another Thomas, but Rufus Sewell gave such a genuinely surprising heartfelt performance all throughout this episode, actually trying to save his son (again) from the strife of war, as this other Thomas seeks to enlist in the army to go and fight in Vietnam. It's clear from both prime John and alt-John that John regrets the journey he has taken, as this experience in an alternate reality where he never became a high-ranking Nazi, seems to have shaken him, at least for a moment.

THE MANDALORIAN, "Chapter 1" & "Chapter 2: The Child", November 12 & 15, 2019, Actors: Pedro Pascal, Taika Waititi, The Scenes: The Child reveal & Baby Yoda saves The Mandalorian
Justyna: I was pleasantly surprised by the first two episodes of the series. There are many scenes that I could highlight from this show already but I think I'll go with the big reveal at the end of the first episode. The asset that the Mandalorian was hired to retrieve is fifty-year-old infant belonging to the same species as Yoda. The child was already given a name by the fans ("Baby Yoda") and I loved every single part focused around him so far. Any interaction between the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda was wonderfully done, special shout-out to the rescue and the many attempts made by the child to help with the bounty hunter's wound in the second episode. But the reveal is where it all begins and I felt immediately more invested in the story. What I found especially powerful about this moment has to be the Mandalorian's reaction. It becomes clear that he's not okay with hurting children. He doesn't hesitate to shoot IG-11 when the droid attempts to kill Baby Yoda, even though they fought together a moment earlier. His choice is what makes a difference in this scene. I loved that close-up on the Mandalorian and the music in the background when he makes the decision. All we see is his helmet but from his body language, voice and actions I think we can understand his emotions far more than I expected. There's certainly a lot more to learn about this character and I'm excited to see what's next. Also, Baby Yoda is absolutely adorable. These two are certainly an unexpected but already great duo. Kudos to Jon Favreau, Pedro Pascal and the whole team for all their work so far.
Milo: Baby Yoda saves The Mandalorian. We don't know much about the Baby Yoda yet (other than well, it's 50 years old and not Yoda) but seeing it save The Mandalorian from being attacked in combat using the force was one of the highlights of the episode, a desert brawl that felt straight out of a classic western and teased the direction that the series was headed in further. This was possibly an even better follow up, but there were multiple standout scenes that made sure the second episode was an improvement on the first.

WILL & GRACE, "The Chick and the Egg Donor", November 14, 2019, Actors: Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, The Scene: Will tells Grace he will be the father of her child
Diana:
After revealing McCoy doesn't want kids anymore, Will tells Grace he will be the father of her son/daughter since he's always wanted to be a dad. I thought it was a very sweet moment, and I kinda saw it coming.

YOUNG SHELDON, "Pongo Pygmaeus and a Culture that Encourages Spitting", November 14, 2019, Actors: Raegan Revord and more, The Scene: Missy gets into a fight
Jamie:
Like her grandmother and her father, I was also cheering her on. She's truly my favorite character on the show. She'd been receiving harassment from pretty much everyone over being on the baseball team and finally she was done taking it.
