911 - Kids Today - Review - It's All Downhill From Here

Much like last year, fans were disappointed to see that the big catastrophic event they've been taunted with all summer won't happen until episode 2 at the very least. Unlike last year, though, I can't be mad at the wait, for it gives us time catch up with the events of the past few months, as well as to introduce a few new storylines.

Starting with Buck - who seems to be once again a center stage character - whose journey in this episode puts us through a bit of a roller-coaster. After his accident in the season 2 finale, we skip 5 months ahead, to his final exam to be allowed to work again, that he passes easily enough, but when the time comes to celebrate that victory, he suffers a major setback in the form of several blood clots that threaten his future as a firefighter. This drastic decision seemed a bit odd to me, and I can't help but feel that Bobby has something to do with benching Buck to a desk-job due to that incident, given the conversation with Athena.

"Athena - You worry that he's pushing himself too hard?
Bobby - Yeah, that's what I did, thought I could handle it, lied to everybody, ignored the pain, I don't want him making the mistakes I did. The job should mean a lot, but it shouldn't mean everything. He's got to learn that."

Needless to say, this sent him spiraling into a pretty bad bout of depression, until Eddie got the brilliant idea to lift his spirits by a somewhat forced day out with Christopher. Again, his luck ran out, when, while having a touching heart to heart, the pier where Buck and Christopher were hanging out is hit by a Tsunami, in what was by far the best scene of the episode.

Though Buck's story took a lot of screen time this week, some was also allocated to other characters, most notably to Karen and Hen who have decided to have a child, which does worry me given this show's tendency to beat on the characters as soon as they show even the tiniest sign of happiness.
And one of this week's calls did little to appease these fears, when Maddie received a call from a woman whose baby had been stolen while she was still pregnant.

What about you? What did you think of this premiere? Leave your thoughts in the comments bellow and I'll see you in a few days for episode 2!
