Shadowhunters - Heavenly Fire - Review + POLL

9 Apr 2019

This week on Shadowhunters, Simon gets himself arrested to help Izzy find out what’s been happening to Downworlders. He meets Helen Blackthorn and finds out that Victor Aldertree has been turning Downworlders human against their will and wants to do the same to all Downworlders. Simon and Raphael break out with some heavenly fire. Izzy and Aline arrest Aldertree. While Alec prepares to propose, Magnus is still struggling with the loss of his magic. Clary and Jace attempt to interrogate Jonathan.

Faith restored: So Jia and Aline aren’t evil after all, yay. I have to admit, I was a bit worried for a second. It really did appear that Jia knew about what was happening to the Downworlders. And I know that the writers have made some drastic changes before (Max) but changing the allegiance of such important characters would’ve been too much. So I’m glad they didn’t and I hope we see more of Aline in the next few episodes.
Are you crazy? I know it all worked out in the end but Simon and Izzy’s plan just felt way too dangerous. Think of how wrong everything could’ve gone if Simon hadn’t found help on the inside. And he was lucky that most of their prison system was based on UV rays meaning it didn’t work on Simon. Luckily, everything worked out in the end. Except maybe for Raphael. Although, he didn’t seem to mind his new human status too much. Raphael came from a religious background when he was human and I don’t think he was ever fully okay with being a vampire. So perhaps something good came out of it.

Super satisfying: When I first saw Victor back my reaction was “Do we really need this guy back?”. But it seems that the sole purpose of bringing him back was to make him the bad guy and have Izzy kick his ass. So I’m perfectly fine with it now, as long as this is the last we ever see of this guy.

Not gonna happen: The writers don’t really seem to be done with the storyline that focusses on the bond between Clary and Jonathan so I have a feeling that they won’t be disconnected just yet. Those dreams she had as a child means they had a connection even before Lilith gave them that rune. I think they’ll have Clary give in at one point before they manage to break the link. Though I am basing most of these assumptions on the descriptions for the next few episodes, which have often been misleading.

I told you: Poor Alec, he spent the entire episode nerve-wracked about proposing to Magnus only for him to show up drunk and upset. But this was kind of to be expected, wasn’t it? He’s lost his magic, part of his identity, for the second time now. Of course, he’s not fine. Like I said last week, I really don’t think this was the right time for a proposal. Magnus needs to be able to process everything that happened first before being able to move on.
Give me the spin-off: I immediately knew who Helen was the minute she mentioned her half-fae heritage. And yes, I may have squealed a bit. I already lost hope of seeing any Blackthorns in the finale but I love that we still got her. I wonder if we’ll get to see her relationship with Aline develop on screen or not. That scene of them meeting gave me hope. It’s a shame they never managed to acquire the rights to The Dark Artifices, that would’ve made one hell of a spin-off.

Best quotes: Clary: “There’s this evil queen that kept her prince locked in a burning tower so that he could never love anyone but her. And I was the princess that was supposed to rescue him. Every time, I would climb that tower and just as I reached the top … I would fall. I never made it to the top. I couldn’t rescue him and I could still hear his screams. It was him.”
Helen: “Look, I might be a Shadowhunter but I’m a Downworlder too. And no one gets to take that away from me.”
Helen: “I didn’t do it because I’m half Seelie, you know.” Aline: “I never said you did.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
