Scene Of The Week - March 10, 2019 + POLL

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

ALL AMERICAN, "Regulate", March 6, 2019, Actors: Daniel Ezra, Chad L. Coleman, The Scene: Spencer confronts Cory
Mads:
It's a moment that has been foreshadowed since the pilot episode. Spencer finally, tearfully, confronts his dad after finding out the real reason he left all those years ago and he asks him why he's really back. Does he genuinely care about his sons? Is he trying to hurt Grace? Or is he just there to mooch off Spencer's newfound success? It's heartbreaking and well-acted by Ezra who conveys the profound agony of paternal abandonment that has plagued him for years.

AFTER LIFE, "Episode 4", March 8, 2019, Actors: Ricky Gervais and more
The Scene: Tony goes on his first date since his wife died (picked by DarkUFO)

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, "The Golden Child", March 7, 2019, Actors: Melissa Fumero, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Andy Samberg, The Scene: David and Amy have a dance off
Beth:
When FOX axed B99 last May, Lin Manuel Miranda tweeted his sadness and I won't say that helped save the show but I want to think it did. So casting him as Amy's ultra-perfect brother was an inspired choice. The dance off scene was hilarious and I actually bought that these two were siblings. I hope that David is back in the future because I will need more scenes like this.

FOR THE PEOPLE, "First Inning", March 7, 2019, Actors: Ben Shenkman, Hope Davis, Regé-Jean Page and more, The Scenes: Jill and Roger get swatted & Leonard and Sandra's closing arguments
Luana: Jill and Roger get swatted. This scene was so intense, no matter what you think of this kid, this was terrifying, and I don't believe the issue is the practice alone but the cops' response feels unhealthy as well. Seeing the panic in their eyes, knowing anything could go awry with just one untimely movement, of course they had never experienced anything like it before but it makes you wonder why no one brought up the fact that some people have that relationship with the cops every day of their lives.
Marko: Leonard and Sandra's closing arguments.

GOOD GIRLS, "I'd Rather Be Crafting", March 3, 2019, Actors: Christina Hendricks and more, The Scene: Beth makes a decision
Ellys:
A year long cliffhanger finally resolved. If you're going to leave your audience hanging, there had better be rewarding payoff. Very often there isn't. That wasn't the case with this wonderfully ferocious sophomore. The opening scene with standout work from Christina Hendricks and great supporting work from Manny Montana and Matthew Lillard absolutely crushed it. And ended on a startling, gruesome note that shakes up the game again in big ways.

I AM THE NIGHT, "Queen's Gambit, Accepted", March 4, 2019, Actors: India Eisley, Jefferson Mays, Chris Pine, The Scene: Fauna fights back
Justyna:
I may have mixed feelings about the show (and its pacing) overall but the performances were absolutely wonderful. This final confrontation also turned out to be truly powerful and very different than what I expected. After all the revelations Fauna is ready to go back home to her mother and leave her biological family behind. Unfortunately she ends up in an actual nightmare also known as her father/grandfather's residence. Things are scary and creepy from the start but when George decides to paint his new victim he stops pretending and brutally hits Fauna. Her injury is only the beginning, every minute spent in George's "workshop" is a tragedy waiting to happen. Everywhere around her Fauna finds paintings and photos of Hodel's previous victims. Despite her fear this young girl uses all of her strength to stand up against this monster. With random objects in her hands she bravely fights back and manages to take Hodel's gun before he can hurt her again. But it's her words that truly make a difference in this moment. She realizes what George cares about and uses it against him. Influenced by her meetings with George's ex-wife she finds flaws in Hodel's "art", she criticizes it and calls him a simple-minded man. Her words cut deep and she also makes him realize she will never be his family. He's nothing more than a pathetic, boring man. A monster who is not her father and certainly doesn't own her in any way. Fauna is scared, heartbroken, injured but she's also powerful and stronger than ever before in this moment. She knows and chooses exactly who she wants to be. She faces the monster and survives leaving him alive but damaged, finally running away to hide, no longer in search for another victim. I'm glad Jay shows up to help Fauna but it's even better she's able to save herself. And she even supports Jay, letting him know it's okay to let go and there are no monsters left to slay. At least these two managed to find some peace in the end and in a world as scary and brutal as this one it's all that we could really hope for. Kudos to cast & crew for all their memorable work.

LEGACIES, "The Boy Who Still Has a Lot of Good to Do", March 7, 2019, Actors: Aria Shahghasemi, Danielle Rose Russell, Matt Davis and more, The Scene: Landon is reborn as a Phoenix
Beth:
All season there has been something about Landon and now we finally know what. The lighting in the background as Landon stood up was perfect, so props to TVD alum Paul Wesley for directing such a wonderful and important episode.
Marko: Landon revealed to be a Phoenix.

NEW AMSTERDAM, "Croaklahoma", March 5, 2019, Actors: Ryan Eggold, Lisa O'Hare
The Scene: Max and Georgia's talk
Luana:
It was so heartbreaking to see Max open up about his fears, how the fact that they're worrying about the small things like every other soon to be parents when their situation is different since they know he might not be able to be there for her through the birth, maybe ever. These two are just so good, and they break my heart every time.

PROJECT BLUE BOOK, "Abduction", March 5, 2019, Actors: Ksenia Solo, Currie Graham
The Scene: Susie kills her associate
Mads:
Susie's nameless associate had well overstayed his welcome. I didn't like how the story shifted so she lost the upper-hand so I was really happy to see her kill him once and for all, especially as he'd revealed himself to be abusive and volatile. Had she not killed him, he probably would have killed her at some point.

ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO, "I Saw the Sign", March 5, 2019, Actors: Michael Vlamis, Heather Hemmens, The Scene: Michael sits with Maria
Jennise:
Micheal comes into Maria's bar for a drink. She forbids Michael to speak. Maria is devastated because she's had to put her mother in a care facility. When she breaks down in tears Michael puts an arm around her and just holds her while she cries. He doesn't say a word. No platitudes. Not even an 'it's okay'. He just holds her. Some guys would freak out. Panic and sit there struggling to figure out how to fix it. Given Isobel is, basically, Michael's sister (and pretty high maintenance), he doesn't panic. He just gives her what she needs. For Maria's part, she's known Michael for most of her life. She knows what kind of person he is and that she can trust him. It was an unexpected and very touching moment.

SCHITT'S CREEK, "The M.V.P.", March 5, 2019, Actors: Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy
The Scene: Johnny is ecstatic David hit a home run
Beth:
Johnny being a proud dad as his son rounded the bases was a very sweet moment. Even though he was on the opposite team, he couldn't hide his delight as he watched David clumsily make his way towards home.

SHADOWHUNTERS, "Original Sin", March 4, 2019, Actors: Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia and more, The Scene: Izzy lets Simon bite her
Luana:
After everything she's gone through you could see how worried he was for her, but as if the Fairy Queen knew, there was no other way for him to stay alive. We know she'll be able to recover but it was still a very intense scene.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, "If Memory Serves", March 7, 2019, Actors: Sonequa Martin-Green, Ethan Peck, Anson Mount and more, The Scene: Discovery goes rogue
Milo:
There were plenty of fantastic scenes in this episode but I loved the ending where the crew of Discovery decided to side with Michael, Spock and Pike even though their ship becomes the most wanted vessel in the Federation as a result. It ups the ante for the next few episodes and caps off a brilliant episode on a wonderful note. Also picked by Laura B

STATION 19, "Crash and Burn", March 7, 2019, Actors: Jaina Lee Ortiz, Boris Kodjoe, The Scene: Sullivan tells Andy what his job means to him
Ellys:
While trapped in their near sideways ambulance, a mostly paralyzed Sullivan shares with Andy how he met his wife and how after her death his job was the only thing that kept him going. He confesses, with tears in his eyes, that he doesn't know what a life without being a firefighter would look like. Andy tries to assure him that there are other ways he can help people. Sullivan asks her where her head would be at were she in his position. She's unable to formulate an untruthful answer, so she chooses to not answer at all. It's a moment of heartbreaking honesty in the middle of a very suspenseful dilemma.

SUPERGIRL, "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?", March 3, 2019, Actors: Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, The Scenes: Alex and Supergirl talk in the van & Supergirl visits Alex's apartment
Zandarl: After the mind-wipe things have been a bit tense between Supergirl and Alex so for Supergirl to go to her apartment asking for help was a breakthrough. I loved the mirror pose of hands on hips. The Danvers sisters have always been the heart of the show. While a little sad that she doesn’t remember it’s Kara it’s a pivotal scene for them moving forward.
DJRiter: Alex and Supergirl in the van after the fight with The Elite and destroying the satellite. I have to admit I am really loving this mind-wipe storyline in that it's giving us the beauty of watching these two sisters work their way back to one another. Instead of a quick fix they're showing us how the bond between these two is stronger than the mind-wipe. Her actions this episode showed how Director Danvers is clearly coming down on the side of team Supergirl. And that lovely, quiet scene between Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist in the van was a prime example of less is more in a scene. The awkward distance between them is slowly disappearing and when Alex suggests maybe Supergirl and she can "kick ass" like they used to, the relief and joy in Supergirl's eyes was electric. Kudos to the way the writers have taken the strongest relationship on the show, shaken the status quo, and are bringing us in the long term a bond that will be stronger than ever when it is resolved. It was a risky undertaking and it is paying off!

SUPERNATURAL, "Ouroboros", March 7, 2019, Actors: Alexander Calvert, Ruth Connell, Jensen Ackles and more, The Scene: Jack fights Michael
Justyna:
After Dean gets injured during a fight things get so much worse in such a short time. No longer able to keep Michael trapped in his mind, Dean is terrified to realize what just happened. That's when he, Sam, Castiel and Jack see the consequences of Michael's escape and find each of their friends in the bunker dead or dying right in front of their eyes. Michael is revealed to be residing in a new vessel - Rowena and he's ready to kill everyone standing in his way. That's when Jack stands up to him and uses all of his remaining strength and power to protect his family. Even though he knows what burning off his soul means for him he still decides this fight is worth the cost. Michael tries to dismiss Jack and what's left of his powers but Jack does not let him. I don't think I've realized how much I've grown to care about his character until recently and now Jack absolutely feels like a part of the main cast and the family. That's what made hearing his words all the more impactful. "I'm the son of Lucifer. I'm a Hunter. I'm a Winchester." And he truly is, one of them, a part of the family. Jack manages to force Michael to leave Rowena's body and then he seemingly kills him and absorbs his grace. With a show like Supernatural you can never be quite sure that it's the end of Michael but right now it appears to be the case. In the very last shot of the hour it looks like Jack is himself again, with his full powers and the wings. As much as I would like to believe that's the happy ending everyone was afraid to hope for, I'm expecting we are far from seeing the final consequences of Jack's choice. However this was certainly a defining moment for the character, a memorable turning point for the season and a great scene worthy of this highlight. Kudos to the wonderful cast & crew for all the fantastic work. It's somehow even more impressive knowing we're on Season 14 already. Special shout-out this week to Alexander Calvert and Ruth Connell for their great performances in this scene.

THE BIG BANG THEORY, "The Conference Valuation", March 7, 2019, Actors: Jim Parsons, Mayim Bialik, The Scene: Amy and Sheldon talk about their future children
Shirleena:
Amy's plan to get Sheldon interested in babies worked and he has now started to think about their future children.

THE GOOD DOCTOR, "Breakdown", March 4, 2019, Actors: Freddie Highmore, Daniel Dae Kim, The Scene: Shaun's breakdown
Diana: Shaun breaks down in front of the new chief of surgery Dr. Han. He shouts out he's a surgeon and he can't lose his job. Despite Han warning him to calm down or he'll be forced to fire him, Shaun keeps going "I am a surgeon!" Freddie Highmore's performance was stunning. He deserves an award, seriously.
Naomi: Shaun decides to take a last stand to force Dr. Han into reinstating him as a surgeon. His idea does not go as planned as his emotions become uncontrollable, and after much warning Dr. Han fires Shaun. This scene was very powerful. The show does a good job of portraying a high functioning savant, but this episode went at the very core of the difficulty of Shaun's condition and how Dr. Han's point of view (no matter how distasteful it may seem) has to be considered as valid.
Marko: Shaun has an emotional breakdown.
Abi: Freddie Highmore was exceptional in this scene and seeing the spiral as the frustration of not being allowed to be able to do his job overwhelms him was excellently portrayed.

THE PASSAGE, "You Are Not That Girl Anymore", March 4, 2019, Actors: Saniyya Sidney, Jamie McShane and more, The Scene: Amy makes her choice
Jennise: This scene was about Amy making, literally, a life or death choice. Fanning, the show's big bad is on hand to help her make that choice. As with all but three of the adults around her, his goal is selfish. He needs Amy to be his 12th. (Although we don't really know which of his goals requires 12 vampires.) But in the end, Amy was the only person who could make that decision. There was no way for any of the adults in her life to force her to make the decision they wanted her to make. The visual of a tunnel with two forks made it clear Amy had two choices. She doesn't want to die. She starts to panic then, repeating "The Agent's" words she calms herself. After considering what the people around her have told her, she realizes there is a third option after all. She doesn't die and she doesn't take Fanning's fork. She leaves by way of the entrance. Another reason the tunnel was the perfect metaphor. Amy Bellafonte is one of my absolute favorite characters of the season. She's smart and funny and the young lady playing her can act.
Mads: After becoming sick, Amy is forced to choose between turning into a viral or dying, or is she? Fanning tries to manipulate her but ultimately Amy creates a new path by going out the opposite end of the proverbial tunnel, and she wakes up. The moment in the tunnel where she tries to figure out what she wants to do and flashes back to all the people who have supported her, like Brad and her mother, is so powerful and so well-acted by the astonishing Saniyya Sidney. It's one of the best moments of the season so far.

YOU'RE THE WORST, "Bachelor/Bachelorette Party Sunday Funday", March 6, 2019, Actors: Chris Geere, Aya Cash and more, The Scene: Gretchen and Jimmy answer questions about their life together
Giulia:
Gretchen and Jimmy answer some questions about their life together during their bachelor/bachelorette party. A very hard scene to watch. Gretchen and Jimmy basically do not agree on anything and they are about to get married. Gretchen's expressions tell all, she feels very judged by her future husband, whereas Jimmy's incredulity is almost offensive. I am starting to understand where the story is going and I don't think we'll get a happy ending for the couple.
