The Gifted - hoMe - Review: This is a Losing Battle

With the Inner Circle and the Purifiers on the rise, and the nation more divided than ever, the dream of the X-Men is on the verge of failure. In attempts to revive the Mutant Underground, Evangeline proposes a country-wide meeting.

Meanwhile, Lauren and Andy continue to disagree in their dreams and the Frost Sisters attempt to intervene. Caitlin makes the risky suggestion of connecting with a family member for vital intel, and Lorna tries to secretly investigate Reeva's plans for the Inner Circle.

CLARICE STRIKES OUT ON HER OWN

Finally we got an episode that delves into Clarice's past. We learn about her tragic childhood in a foster care home with an abusive guardian and the best friend she lost by his violent hand. Clarice is very much one of those people who picks her battles carefully and this is the most critical difference between her and John.

As she points out to Thunderbird, running into a losing battle isn't noble, it's selfish. She loves him dearly but can't stand to watch him kill himself for a lost cause. Sad news for us Thunderblink fans as the duo says goodbye to one another. Clarice decides she's going to join the Morlocks. Personally, while I don't like seeing Clarice split off from the group, I feel as if she is a character with so much untapped potential and this new storyline could be beneficial for her.

If anything, it proves how strong of an actress Jaime Chung is and now we'll get to see her in a plot that doesn't revolve around the choices John makes. I'm just hoping the show doesn't rush into a romance with Clarice and Urg, I mean I wouldn't say I'm opposed to it but I want to see Clarice as the independent and proud mutant I know she can be.

A FAMILY REUNION

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Like reaching out to Caitlin's brother Danny who works for Homeland Security. Danny proves to be mostly a dead-end though. All he can find out is that Benedict Ryan is the secret leader of the Purifiers which isn't news to us. He also manages to tip off Sentinel Services to their whereabouts and triggers a stand-off where Lauren gets to flex her new offensive powers.

THE DRAGON GOES UP IN SMOKE

Lorna doesn't have much luck going playing double agent for the Inner Circle and the Underground. She manages to discover the secret mission the new recruits are on is to kill Evangeline but by the time she sends out the bat-signal it's too late. She does succeed in making the triplets suspicious of her though.

If Evangeline really is dead (and I won't believe it until I see a body I know how these shows work!) then that is a colossal waste of a character. I mean she ended up having what, like 4 scenes altogether? We didn't even see her using her powers to their full extent, maybe the budget wouldn't allow for it.

Outside of Reeva's plans to kill off the leaders of the Mutant Underground summit meeting, the Inner Circle also wants to get control of Fenris. The second the Frosts realize Andy has a psychic connection with Lauren they coax him into letting them use it to persuade Lauren into joining them. She won't be given much choice in the matter. If she won't come to the Inner Circle willingly, they'll kill her. Lauren's growing power could either be a weapon for them to use, or a dangerous threat.

THOUGHTS & OBSERVATIONS

- This is a small thing to be annoyed by but really Lorna? You couldn't just bend down and pick up your phone? Does having mutant abilities make you lazy?

- Reed and his powers are giving me Peter Petrelli flashbacks. I feel like he's just going to blow up and take everyone down with him.

Lauren stops sleeping on an all-new The Gifted next Tuesday, January 22nd on FOX.
