Scene Of The Week - January 27, 2019 + POLL

Jan 27, 2019

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS, "The Day Before...", January 24, 2019, Actors: Ron Livingston, Christina Ochoa and more, The Scene: The end sequence
DarkUFO:
End sequence leading up to John's suicide.

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, "The Tattler", January 24, 2019, Actors: Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Chelsea Peretti, The Scenes: Jake helps Gina make a choice to move on & Amy sees Jake's attendance record
Justyna:
It's been a while since we had an episode focused on Jake and Gina's friendship, so I was glad to see these two at the center of this week's story. As it turns out Gina helped Jake in the past with making a right decision and stopped him from taking an action that would cost him his dream job. Trying to return the favor, at the very end of the episode Jake helps Gina realize it's time to move on from the 99th precinct. As hard as it is to say goodbye and change her life completely this was never a job Gina was passionate about. It's time for her to follow her dream and Jake is there for his oldest friend. This was such an honest conversation and both actors played it wonderfully. There's a slight hesitation, a moment of pride and a hopeful smile shared between them. It's also the beginning of Gina's departure from the show and it already feels exactly right for her.
Beth: Amy sees Jake's attendance record. This scene was simply hilarious and at the same time adorable.

CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, "I'm Almost Over You", January 25, 2019, Actors: Scott Michael Foster and more, The Scene: Nathaniel realizes he has to let Rebecca go (picked by Luana)

DYNASTY, "The Sight of You", January 25, 2019, Actors: Elizabeth Gillies, Ana Brenda Contreras and more, The Scene: The bar fight
Mads:
Fallon and the rest of the girls (plus Sam) get into a bar fight. This is the Dynasty that I love. This whole episode was gold (aside from the boring soccer plotline) but it was so fun to see everyone versus Ashley and the complete campiness and insanity of a bar brawl breaking out during the middle of a karaoke contest. Plus I loved seeing Fallon defending both Cristal and Kirby.

GOOD TROUBLE, "Allies", January 22, 2019, Actors: Maia Mitchell, Roger Bart
The Scene: The judge puts Callie in her place (picked by Luana)

GREY'S ANATOMY, "Help, I'm Alive", January 24, 2019, Actors: Debbie Allen, James Pickens Jr., Jesse Williams, The Scene: Catherine breaks down
Nikos:
Fed up with both Jackson and Richard questioning her, Catherine breaks down as she tells them she has every right to play the cancer card because she's the one carrying this burden and by speaking about it only makes it more real. Seeing Catherine's moments of vulnerability has been the highlight of her cancer arc and there's plenty more to come. Also picked by Mads

NEW AMSTERDAM, "Anima Sola", January 22, 2019, Actors: Ryan Eggold, Lisa O'Hare
The Scene: Georgia finds a use for the blender (picked by Luana)

OUTLANDER, "Providence", January 20, 2019, Actors: Richard Rankin and more, The Scene: Roger comes back to try and help Father Alexandre
Laura B:
Roger comes back to try and help Father Alexandre Fergault, but it's too late! A really powerful and tragic ending to season 4's penultimate episode, as the secondary characters of the Mohawk village descend into tragedy around Roger when the religious French man accepts his fate, believing he deserves his end at the hands of Mohawks, which not only does a nearly-free Roger find himself unable to live with, as he turns around and comes back to the scene, and where he makes the death by fire-set-pyre a little less painful, but also Roger bares witness to the Mohawk mother, leaving her baby behind to join her lover in death, leaving her unrequited Mohawk love interest cradling the baby and looking at the flames in disbelief. A complex and emotional scene about love triangles, spiritual culture and race serving as poignant cautionary tale and a reminder of a history we're all still working to unravel.

SEAL TEAM, "Time to Shine", January 23, 2019, Actors: David Boreanaz, A. J. Buckley, Max Thieriot, Neil Brown Jr., The Scene: Clay, Ray and Jason say their goodbyes to Sonny
Beth:
This scene was the embodiment of the brotherhood the team shares. Sonny's brothers were helpless after they exhausted every option to get him out of the torpedo tube and were left with no choice but to be there for Sonny in what may have been his final moments. It was an emotional and devastating moment. In the end Sonny was saved, but that moment was one of the best the show has done.

SPEECHLESS, "O-Our M-a-g-Mageddon", January 25, 2019, Actors: Micah Fowler, Kayla Maisonet
The Scene: Izzy shares with JJ her fears of dating him
Marko:
Once again Speechless finds a way to top itself. In a simple but very honest scene they delve into the harsh reality of interacting with disabled people. Izzy shares her fears and JJ understands her as he has the same fears. With a big dose of understanding they cross this path and embark on a new journey.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, "New Eden", January 24, 2019, Actors: Anson Mount, Andrew Moodie, The Scene: Pike tells Jacob the truth about where he's from
Milo:
This was a fantastic end to the episode that had all the hallmarks of a classic TNG instalment, which was no surprise given Jonathan Frakes' direction. Anson Mount is absolutely knocking it out of the park as Pike this season so it was refreshing to see him break the Federation's Prime Directive. The results were successful, so he could get a helmet containing a camera, and it paved way for a new mystery to develop over the course of the season.

SUPERGIRL, "Suspicious Minds", January 20, 2019, Actors: Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood, The Scene: Alex tells Kara she has to be mindwiped too
Justyna:
This one took me completely by surprise. It's been a while since we've had a scene like this between the sisters, making quite a lasting impression on me after the episode. When it becomes clear that the best way to protect Supergirl's identity is to have everyone forget the truth about her it doesn't even hit Kara at first what it means for her and Alex. When Alex tries to convince her that it's absolutely necessary, it doesn't take long for Kara to break down and admit she doesn't know how to go on without her. "The whole reason I became Supergirl... it was to save you." But this time it's Alex's turn to save her sister and despite the fact that it's her mind and memories that will be rewritten she stays strong for Kara and doesn't allow herself to get too emotional. She accepts the harsh reality of the situation and makes the sacrifice without a second thought. We can't even begin to imagine what a big impact this loss will have on the sisters. Their story, their bond is deeply related to their time working side by side, ever since they were teenagers. Even though Kara will continue to be Alex's sister their relationship will change in aspects they didn't have a chance to consider. Both actresses did a wonderful job in the scene. Melissa's voice breaking and the two embracing were very powerful images. And just a moment later, with the music in the background and their friends around, Alex loses a memory of her sister as the hero she's always believed in the most. Great work by all involved. Really interested to see what's going to happen next.
DJRiter: Just when you think Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist can’t get any better at playing the Danvers Sisters, Alex and Kara, especially after that powerful moment from Elseworlds, we get a scene like this. So that Col. Haley can’t use her alien truth-seeker device to discover Supergirl’s secret identity everyone at the DEO who knows her secret agrees to let J’onn mind-wipe that knowledge from them, including Alex. That moment when Alex turns to Kara and tells her that she has to be mind-wiped too and their subsequent exchange is filled with heartbreaking emotion and is the epitome of everything the Danvers Sisters are, the heart and soul of Supergirl. Alex, ever the protector, making a tremendous sacrifice, ultimately losing memory of everything that makes her who she is, all to protect her sister. That is love. Kara’s anguished pleas to her to quit the DEO and her declaration that she became Supergirl to save her tugged at every viewer’s heart. And when Alex wraps her arms around her sister and says, “Let me save you this time”, an entire fandom wept. Leigh and Benoist played the wrenching emotion of this scene to perfection. The love between Alex and Kara was etched on their faces, in their voices and actions, this was Kara and Alex and Chyler and Melissa at their best.

THE CONNERS, "We Continue to Truck", January 22, 2019, Actors: Lecy Goranson, Rene Rosado, Laurie Metcalf, The Scenes: Becky and Emilio talk about their lives & Jackie breaks down over Roseanne's death
Klutzy girl: Jackie breaks down over Roseanne's death in the former Lunch Box. I missed the restaurant and it was so nice to see it again but Laurie Metcalf knocked it out of the park. It seems like Jackie buried her grief over her sister's death by dating and when that didn't work out, she finally went over the edge. It was a painful, emotional scene.
Claire: What a terrific season finale. I think season 2 is inevitable (hopefully). The scene where Becky and Emilio are in the park talking about their lives. They’ve been shopping for baby things and are talking about bringing their baby to the park someday. Becky laments that she never saw her life turning out like this, but Emilio says that this was his dream to be with a strong, beautiful woman who is having his baby. You can see Becky’s untrusting, cold exterior starting to melt away and they share a sweet kiss. Runner-up: the fabulous Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie completely melting down in a Chinese restaurant that used to be The Lunch box, so sad and hilarious at the same time.

THE GOOD DOCTOR, "Aftermath", January 21, 2019, Actors: Freddie Highmore, Paige Spara
The Scene: Shaun finds out that Lea has a date
Naomi:
At the end of the night, Dr. Murphy goes home seemingly thinking about sparking up a romance with Lea, only to find out that she is going out on a date. In addition to this, other characters seem to be rekindling love matches or friendships to add to their lives which highlights Dr. Murphy's sense of isolation.

THE GOOD PLACE, "Pandemonium", January 24, 2019, Actors: Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, D'Arcy Carden, The Scenes: Eleanor and Chidi say goodbye & Eleanor asks Janet for "the answer"
Justyna:
Once again I can honestly say I did not see this one coming. Chidi making an impossible decision (!) to have his memories of the afterlife, Eleanor and his friends erased turned this finale into quite an emotional journey. At the very heart of it there's this scene, the beautiful and heartbreaking goodbye between Eleanor and Chidi. It starts with a gift from Michael, both of them finally get to see the highlights of their entire story. The video is wonderfully done, filled with the moments that made these two fall in love and leaves characters and many viewers with tears in their eyes. Eleanor tries to hide her pain behind humor but she admits how hard it is for her knowing that she's going to miss Chidi while he barely sees her, even though she's fighting for their chance to get to the Good Place. That's when he assures her he has absolute faith in her. He's not struggling with making a choice this time, even though it might be the most significant he's ever made, because he believes in her and puts their fate in her hands. Truly beautiful exchange showing exactly how much these love each other, despite all their differences. Both actors are absolutely wonderful in the scene. Can't wait to see the next season already. For now, kudos to cast & crew for all their work!
Klutzy girl: Chidi and Eleanor watch a highlight reel of their moments together during all the reboots. As upset as I still am about the mindwipe, this was an emotional moment that killed me. Every single highlight chosen was amazing.
Shirleena: It's the night before Chidi’s memory is going to be reset. Eleanor and Chidi are sitting in the courtyard where the welcome video is played, Michael walks over and as a gift to them he plays a video of Eleanor and Chidi’s relationship.
Nikos: After Eleanor says goodbye to Chidi for good, she seeks answers from Janet about the world and love and how it can all be so cruel and random. Janet sits down and offers some friendly "not a girl, not a robot" wisdom and reminds Eleanor that in this world of randomness she should be appreciating the improbable and incredible things that can happen because that's what's fun about being human. A really touching and resonating moment between these two friends.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT, "Mailbox", January 22, 2019, Actors: Kennedy Lea Slocum, Mary McCormack, The Scene: Wendi teaches Peggy how to drive
Claire:
I have to admit I am biased in that I grew up in the 70’s and can relate to this show, completely. The scene where Wendi is teaching Peggy how to drive, talking about the power and freedom she’ll have as a modern woman of the 70’s. Peg is a put-upon housewife and teases about putting the pedal to the metal and driving right into a wall. As a put-upon housewife myself I totally get this joke and remember my own mom learning to drive in the 70’s as a thirty something, put-upon housewife. I love Peg and her very dry sense of humor and how behind all of her ‘mean’ bluster she truly loves her family. Oh, why did we all become helicopter parents? I wish I’d been more like Peggy and I’m looking forward to seeing how she is going to evolve over the seasons.

THIS IS US, "Songbird Road: Part One", January 22, 2019, Actors: Justin Hartley, Griffin Dunne and more, The Scene: Kevin decides to go back to help his uncle
Naomi: When The Big Three are on their way home, Kevin remembers a talk with Jack where his dad tells him that there are some things about him that he shouldn't try to mimic. In that moment, Kevin realizes that leaving his Uncle Nicky behind is something that he cannot do. They return to him just in time and find him with a gun mumbling about never getting a chance to tell Jack the truth about what happened in the war. What a powerful scene and a great continuation of Kevin's journey of growth and closeness to Jack.
Klutzy girl: Kevin decides not to repeat his father's mistake (although Jack made the right decision at the time) and goes back to help his uncle. I'm so glad he chose to do this and couldn't leave him.

TRUE DETECTIVE, "The Big Never", January 20, 2019, Actors: Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, The Scenes: Wayne is confronted by the "ghost" of his late wife & The end scene
Claire: What a phenomenal season so far. The scene where Wayne Hays, in the present as an old man and seemingly dealing with a dementia diagnosis, is confronted by the ‘ghost’ of his late wife, Amelia. It is a terrifying scene where Wayne is sitting alone in his home office, wracking his brain for facts of the long ago case and tape recording what he can remember. When a dark figure appears behind him, seated, and begins talking to him. It is his dead wife and she seems mad and disappointed and says to him: “you’re worried that people will find what you left in the woods.” It makes us think that this good guy, FBI agent is maybe not who we think he is. This season is perfectly balancing three timelines and here we see a divergence of those timelines and are left to wonder what is real and what is not. An earlier scene in this episode alluded to this ‘time travel’ feeling when a young Amelia and Wayne were talking about a poem and their different points of view.
DarkUFO: End scene with Roland and Wayne meeting in the bar and getting back together on the case.

YOU'RE THE WORST, "The One Thing We Don't Talk About", January 23, 2019, Actors: Aya Cash, Kether Donohue, The Scene: Lindsay helps Gretchen practice calling her mom
Mads:
Lindsay and Gretchen roleplay Gretchen calling her mom. Gretchen and Lindsay scenes are my favorite because of how well Kether and Aya play off of each other but I had to rewatch this particular scene several times because it was just so funny! Lindsay using an accent to portray Gretchen's mom and telling her to botox her face so it settles before June, her incessant sniping and how involved both of them got in the scenario complete with them ultimately screaming at each other despite the phones not being real. I love them.
