Wild Cards - George R.R. Martin's Sci-Fi Superhero Series Nearing Multi-Series Deal at Hulu

Hulu is nearing a deal to secure rights to George R.R. Martin's Wild Cards series per The Hollywood Reporter.

Hulu and Universal Cable Productions are near a multi-series deal for the sci-fi superhero franchise. A writers room is about to open for both series that will be written and executive produced by The Secret Circle creator, Andrew Miller, who has an overall deal with UCP. Both series will create a Wild Cards shared universe for the streaming network. Melinda Snodgrass, Vince Gerardis and Martin will executive produce multiple possible Wild Cards series.

Wild Cards is a shared universe of anthologies, mosaic novels and stand-alone stories written by an assortment of over 40 authors and edited by Martin and co-editor Melinda Snodgrass per Variety. Wild Cards consists of 27 books so far. Variety notes the idea behind the book series hails from Martin's experience as a gamemaster for the roleplaying game of Superworld.

This marks Martin's third small screen adaptation following Game of Thrones (and it's subsequent prequels/spinoffs) and Syfy's upcoming Nightflyers.

Set in the present, the series explores the aftermath of an alien virus, released over Manhattan in 1946 that killed 90 percent of those it infected. In the survivors, DNA was altered, creating grotesque physical deformities, except for a tiny percentage who develop super-human powers instead. Called the Wild Card virus, it has passed down through generations, and can go undetected until suddenly activated by a traumatic event — at which point the carrier is either killed, mutated or granted god-like powers. Effects that are largely a manifestation of the victim's emotional state, making them vulnerable to reverence or ridicule on a deeply personal level. Now, after decades of sociological turmoil, having been worshipped, oppressed, exploited and ignored, victims of the virus want to define their own future.

By now most of you… well, those of you who visit other areas of the internet beyond my Not A Blog… will already have heard the news: Wild Cards is coming to Hulu. And not just with a single show, either. We are developing two pilots to start with, but the eventual dream is to have three, four, five, six… many… series out there streaming. As long time fans know, Wild Cards is not just a series story, but rather a world, a whole universe, with a half century of history, hundreds of stories, thousands of characters.

Andrew Miller will be scripting the pilot(s) for Hulu, and will serve as showrunner for the series. A huge fan of comic books and supers in general, and Wild Cards in particular, Andrew has been living and breathing Wild Cards for the past few months, and devouring the books one after another.
