Legacies - Some People Just Want to Watch the World Burn - Review

This week on Legacies, the Salvatore school played a flag football game against the Mystic Falls Timberwolves and were forced to lose so that they don’t stand out and raise questions. It, of course, turned into a brawl. Hope, Alaric, and Rafael went looking for Landon, who they found along with a dragon (YAY). They killed the dragon and retrieved the knife but Landon and Rafael took off. Also, Hope was planning to revenge on Landon, which Alaric was not happy about.

Mini-Klaus: Hope reminded me so much of her father this week. Reckless, impatient and snarky as hell. This kid has been through a lot. I think it’s safe to say naïve Hope is officially dead. When you get duped by 2 almost-boyfriends, you make damn sure it doesn’t happen a third time. She and Klaus have a similar way of dealing with their anger. Revenge. I feel bad for her, though. I get that when Hayley sent her to that school it was so she could be around people like her, but she’s not really. She’s the only tribrid in existence and with her parents gone there aren’t even any more hybrids left that she could possibly relate to. I understand that she feels left out and, speaking from experience when you feel left out you tend to seclude yourself even more. This girl needs some friends asap.

Here be dragons: I knew it! The minute she went for Alaric’s phone and watch, I knew she was a dragon. I rolled my eyes so hard when they went with pyromancer at first. This is one of the things that I really wanted from this show, new species. But I do have some remarks. For one, it bothered me that the dragon couldn’t speak in human form. This makes me think we’re not really going to learn much more about them. I really don’t want the new species to be glossed over as the thing of the week. I want mythology the way we’ve had it for vampires, werewolves, and witches (btw, really want more on the origin of witches). This show is set in a school so there’s a lot of potential for new info and lore. Writers, don’t waste it.

Rules are meant to be broken: I get why dark magic isn’t allowed but is Alaric really that shocked that Hope used it? Just look at how she grew up. She must have gotten the occasional peek at Esther’s spells (which can’t have all been earth magic, the woman helped create vampires after all). Then there’s Freya … well need I say more, we all saw plenty of dark magic there. And let’s not forget the Hollow, which possessed Hope twice. I mean, telling her not to use dark magic is like telling someone they can’t swear after they’d been doing it their entire life. (not easy, believe me)

Needs work: My biggest issue with the show right now is the twins. I really like Josie, but Lizzie … I’m not sure if it’s the actress, the lack of a proper storyline or just how the character is written. Perhaps a combination of all 3. The acting hasn’t been great but we’re only 2 episodes in and I noticed that the actress doesn’t have that much experience yet. I remember similar issues with Shadowhunters, which improved after a while. And since it’s still early in the season, a proper storyline is still very possible. But something needs to change about how the character is written because IMO she doesn’t really come across as likable. I don’t get her anger at Hope, it’s not like she’s trying to take Alaric’s attention on purpose. If you’re going to be mad at anyone, be mad at the dad that’s ignoring you. And while we’ve seen a lot of sweet moments between the twins, I get the feeling that Lizzie tends to be a bit controlling towards Josie. Especially after M.G.’s comment.
Questions: What is Penelope’s damage? No one is that bitchy without a reason but they better get to it fast because, while I enjoy the occasional snark, the longer this goes on, the harder it will be to like her later on. Also, still no word on Caroline. I think I may repeat this each week until we finally find out why she’s M.I.A. And last but not least, has that creepy gargoyle always been there or is that something Alaric added? Or did Damon buy it at a yard sale?

Best quotes: Hope: “He had plenty of advice about how to handle betrayal. My personal favorite: “Think therefore on revenge and cease to weep.””
Hope: “He’s only dangerous if crappy apologies can kill.”
M.G.: “Hey, buckle up, son. You about to be tripping. For real, though. Trip.”
Alaric: “Did you wake up with a death wish today?” Hope: “Something like that.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.

Please be respectful in the comments, any unnecessary rudeness isn't welcome.
