Charmed - Advance Preview - Witches Too

After the tragic death of their mother, three sisters in a college town are stunned to discover they are witches. Soon this powerful threesome must stand together to fight the everyday and supernatural battles that all modern witches must face: from vanquishing powerful demons to toppling the patriarchy.

"This is not a witch hunt, it's a reckoning!"

Since this is a reboot of a classic, the plot cannot be a surprise to many, still, I will try to get through this preview without giving spoilers away. Charmed starts off a little cheesy, but with some acknowledging of it, and self-awareness is definitely the way to go when it comes to this kind of stories where "normal" people discover there's magic in their world, let's just say it's not something to be processed easily, especially since this magic turns creepy when demons are involved.

From the logline alone you get that political commentary will be a part of this show and I'm glad to say, for me, it was well executed, it finds the way to go about it with humor instead of anger, there's even a big part of the story relating to anger that suggests this is a very conscious thing, and I believe this way it has a chance not to drive some of the audience away, at least not for political issues.

The cast is good, the girls have great chemistry, there's definitely potential to have a lot of heart with this sisterhood, and Rupert Evans (The Man in the High Castle) as the "Whitelighter" Harry is awesome and hilarious. Maggie (Sarah Jefferies - Shades of Blue) can seem a bit shallow at first, and with her comes a bit of boy drama and probably some college sorority drama as well; Macy (Madeleine Mantock) brings all the nerdiness as a scientist working at the university; and Mel (Melonie Diaz - Fruitvale Station) brings a lot of the humor, especially with the feminist issues which I really appreciated.

Now, if you're looking for answers about whether you'll enjoy this in comparison to the original you probably won't get them anywhere but on the screen giving the show a shot, and it definitely won't be here since I don't have those sorts of expectations regarding remakes, especially ones I haven't watched in a long time, since my memory of them is not that fresh, I only judge them on whether it's a story I'm interested in, and if watching it is an enjoyable experience. So I'll just say, for me, this was an enjoyable watch and I'll be adding this show to my calendar, hopefully, it will only improve with time as we get to know the characters better and possibly fall in love with them.

"Oh, yes. Being a witch is a fully pro-choice enterprise."

CHARMED premieres SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14 (9:00-10:00 P.M. ET), on THE CW. Are you excited about this one? Let me know in the comments.
