Per ComicVine, Elseworlds is a publication imprint for DC comics. It conveys a concept in which an idea is tried upon an existing character or storyline. It gives rise to new storylines for characters who might've not been involved in a situation like that before. It puts them in different circumstances and unusual times. Gotham by Gaslight is considered one of the first Elseworlds stories.
'Elseworlds', or 'Imaginary Stories' are tales where a fresh concept or idea is tried on an existing character or storyline. This often leads to a new and fresh take on existing characters. 'Elseworlds' is also when the narrator give characters new storylines, and concepts.
"In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places--some that have existed, and others that can't, couldn't, or shouldn't exist. The result is stories that make characters who are as familiar as yesterday seem as fresh as tomorrow."
