MAGNUM P.I.
The official synopsis of this series premiere episode is:
“I Saw the Sun Rise” – Jay Hernandez stars as Thomas Magnum in a modern take on the classic series about a decorated former Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator in Hawaii, on the series premiere of MAGNUM P.I., Monday, Sept. 24 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton and Stephen Hill star.
A charming rogue, an American hero and a die-hard Detroit Tigers fan, Magnum lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins, a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent whose second job is to keep Magnum in line, with the help of her two Dobermans. When Magnum needs back-up on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, Theodore “TC” Calvin, a former Marine chopper pilot who runs Island Hoppers, a helicopter tour business, and Orville “Rick” Wright, a former Marine door-gunner-turned-impresario of Oahu’s coolest nightclub and the most connected man on the island. Suspicious of Magnum’s casual attitude and presence at his crime scenes, Detective Gordon Katsumoto (Tim Kang) finds that he and Magnum are more alike than either of them care to admit. With keys to a vintage Ferrari in one hand, aviator sunglasses in the other, and an Old Düsseldorf longneck chilling in the fridge, Thomas Magnum is back on the case!
So I should mention up front, even though I write for SpoilerTV, I'm not a huge fan of giving away spoilers for episodes that haven't aired yet. So, that being said, here is my preview and what I can't say in words, hopefully the pictures tell you all you need to know.
My preview of Series Premier of Magnum PI...
So, let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE fan of the original Magnum PI show from the 1980s. Huge Fan. So of course I watched with doubt. But I do have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Do I love it, way too early to tell. I think what kept me engaged was the casting of this new reboot. I did like the dynamics of this new cast: Jay Hernandez (Thomas Magnum), Perdita Weeks (Juliet Higgins), Zachary Knighton (Orville “Rick” Wright) and Stephen Hill (Theodore “TC” Calvin). I think they did a good job casting Jay Hernandez as Thomas Magnum, especially with his charisma and kick-ass attitude. I also enjoyed the voice overs. And, the Dobermans!
This episode reintroduces the characters we all know and love with some slight twists like Higgins being a woman. There is action, drama and a few laughs. If you are a fan of the original Magnum PI, then the original pilot will tell you a lot of what this episode is going to be. It's not an exact duplicate. Which is why sometimes I'm conflicted and kinda wished this was just a new show on its own merits. Since the original Magnum PI was so memorable and just good even all these years later, I just hope that fans of the original give this new reboot a chance. Even if you have to do what I do sometimes and force myself to forget that this is based off the original and is more like a brand new series.
A funny moment is when Magnum's cell phone rings - it's his ringtone and picture that made me laugh.
Of course, you wouldn't have Magnum PI without him being chased by the two fiercest dogs. And let's not forget the red car! And Hawaii. And the ocean. And some great kick-ass scenes.
What I liked the most of this opening to this reboot, is that it had the feel of the original, what made Magnum PI so darn good. I hoping this is just the beginning of a great new series.
I enjoyed this episode a lot, I hope you do too.
I hope these pictures tell you a lot more than I can say.
Let me know what you think of this episode. And don't forget to watch. I know I'll be watching Monday night.
