Deadline has exclusively revealed that HBO has joined forces with BBC, Bad Wolf (of whom they own a portion of) and New Line Cinema to co-produce the epic fantasy series, His Dark Materials. The drama consists of two eight-episode seasons (BBC renewed the fantasy series yesterday of which is said to be one of the most expensive British dramas to date). HBO has also "acquired worldwide rights".
Written by Jack Thorne and directed by Tom Hooper, the fantasy saga is based on the trilogy of books by Philip Pullman (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass). Filming began this month in Cardiff at Wolf Studios Wales.
