Per Variety, USA Network has ordered Jason Bourne universe set drama, Treadstone, to series.
Passing the pilot stage, Deadline notes that UCP (Universal Cable Productions) is negotiating an international distribution deal with Amazon similar to the one Syfy has with Netflix for Nightflyers. Amazon Studios' Jennifer Salke was vital in the talks as she was aware of the original pitch in her previous role as NBC Entertainment president. The drama is also tired to the Bourne universe which Deadline notes is helpful in "worldwide appeal and name recognition".
The series centers on the fictional CIA black ops program Operation Treadstone, which was the program that created superspy Jason Bourne. The covert program uses behavior modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions. The series will go into production in 2019.
The drama is written by Tim Kring (Heroes, Heroes Reborn, Beyond, Touch, Dig), who also executive produces the drama. Ramin Bahrani (Fahrenheit 451) is attached to direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer. Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner executive produce on behalf of Captivate Entertainment, of whom produced the Bourne film franchise.
“As the #1 cable entertainment network for the past 12 years, USA Network is delivering a dynamic lineup of big, bold programming – and what could be bigger and bolder than the Treadstone mythology?” said Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.
