MOVIES: Doctor Sleep - Ewan McGregor to Star in The Shining Sequel

Ewan McGregor will star as Danny Torrance in Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the Stephen King novel “Dr. Sleep,” the sequel to horror classic “The Shining.”

Sources say King has given his blessing to McGregor’s casting.

Mike Flanagan, who helmed Netflix’s adaptation of the King novella “Gerald’s Game,” is directing. Flanagan’s producing partner Trevor Macy will produce along with Vertigo Entertainment’s Jon Berg.

Warner Bros. had been developing this film, as well as “The Shining” prequel “Overlook Hotel,” for years, but the studio struggled to secure a budget for either film. Following the success of New Line’s “It,” every studio with any sort of King IP under its roof has fast-tracked each property into pre-production, and Warner Bros. saw “Dr. Sleep” as its next King adaptation.

“Dr. Sleep” begins as Torrance carries the trauma of the Overlook Hotel into adulthood. He’s become a reflection of his murderous father, with lingering rage and a drinking problem that dulls his pain as well as his “shining” powers. Those powers return when he embraces sobriety and uses his gift to help the dying at a hospice. He establishes a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his extreme abilities, and who is being targeted by a scary group with the similar abilities. They’ve found that their powers grow if they inhale the “steam” that comes off others with the power to shine, when they are suffering painful deaths.

Dark One - Brandon Sanderson & FremantleMedia North American Developing Fantasy TV Series

FREMANTLEMEDIA NORTH AMERICA PARTNERS WITH POPULAR FANTASY AUTHOR BRANDON SANDERSON ON "DARK ONE," HIS FIRST ORIGINAL CONCEPT FOR TELEVISION

The Unprecedented Relationship Between Author and Production Company Will Bring to Life Sanderson's Newest Astonishing World for a Multi-Media Experience

Burbank, CA (June 11, 2018) - FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) with Random House Studio today announced a milestone partnership with best-selling fantasy novelist Brandon Sanderson. The author is taking the Dark One property to a new level and making it a true multi-media experience - not only spanning the small screen with the TV series, but he's concurrently creating a graphic novel that will be published by Vault Comics. Sanderson's also penning a supplementary, multi-volume book series that will expand on the storyline from the show and further explore subsidiary characters. Additionally, fans will be able to enjoy his master storytelling through the Dark One podcast where it will shed further light on the incidents leading up to where the TV series will begin.

Dark One will be a dramatic fantasy adventure spotlighting a young man who sees visions of strange and fantastical worlds, which he is told are just hallucinations. But this dark and deadly fantasy world that keeps coming to him is actually a real vision of another world - one where he has been prophesied to become a tyrant and destroy this land of interesting creatures, sporadic electrical currents and a darkening landscape.

"I'm used to painting a picture in words. Dark One came to life when I freed myself to think of it as a project for actual visual media, with the setting, characters and outline all coming together," said author Brandon Sanderson. "I'm excited to be able to partner with FremantleMedia North America and Random House Studio on this for television."

"Brandon Sanderson is a powerful storyteller and one of the world's most admired fantasy writers," said Dante Di Loreto, president of scripted entertainment, FremantleMedia North America. "The narrative of Dark One will examine the dual roles we often take on in life - the ability to be a savior as well as a destroyer, and this innovative creative partnership with Brandon will serve as a catalyst for deepening the connection between him and his many fans."

"Brandon Sanderson is one of the most exciting storytellers within the enormous group of authors published by the Penguin Random House group," said Peter Gethers, executive vice president and general manager, Random House Studio. "We are thrilled to be working with him to create one of his extraordinary worlds for a television audience for the first time."

Sanderson's previous books have taken place in fantastical worlds which encompass an intricate system of magic driving the plots. They have graced the New York Times best-seller list six times, including his most recent release, Oathbringer, which debuted at No. 1 when it was published in November of 2017. Garnering numerous honors, including a coveted Hugo Award for his 2012 novella The Emperor's Soul, his works have widespread appeal within the global fantasy community, have been translated into more than 35 languages, and have sold over 12 million copies.

Lord of the Rings - Jennifer Salke Shares Small Updates on Amazon Project

Salke inherited a number of projects in the works, none bigger than a forthcoming series adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” the subject of a massive deal last year that Bezos involved himself personally in. According to Salke, that deal only officially closed last month. But Amazon has been meeting with writers. Salke herself spent three hours with Tolkien’s grandson Simon Tolkien, and the next step is for representatives of the Tolkien estate to meet with writers.

“It’s a partnership,” she said of Amazon’s deal with the estate. “They have some lines in the play on this on strategy and on vision. The great news about that is that they’re actually really thoughtful and smart, as you would expect.”

The Tolkien deal covers most, but not all of the material connected to the author’s Middle Earth saga. Salke said that it is still too early to say what shape, exactly, the series will take. But, she added, “It’s not a remaking of the movies, and it’s not a whole new thing. It’s something in between. It’s not, ‘Oh, it’s “Lord of the Rings” but you don’t recognize anything in it,’ but it’s not totally familiar to you either. So it’s original.”

The scripted narrative about Amazon has been that Bezos wanted his version of Game of Thrones. Have you spoken with him about that and how you can deliver on that goal?

All of us would love a big, addictive show that is executed at the top of its game. We're really excited about Lord of the Rings. Despite all the chatter about it, the deal just closed a month ago. We've been talking to writers. We have an estate that's very active. I've spent three hours with Simon Tolkien. There's a lot of moving parts with it. We'll have some game plan to move forward with very soon. Then there's great genre stuff and tons of stuff in the pipeline. And we just picked up The Expanse, which Jeff was so excited about. We are going to have lots of big shows. They're not all going to be genre sci-fi. We're also going to have some big addictive female shows. We're looking for our next big show that women also can't stop talking about.

One of the clauses in landing Lord of the Rings is that it must be in production within two years. Will it make that?

It'll be in production in two years; [on the air in] 2021 is the hope. But there are other people who wish it was 2020.

What is Peter Jackson's involvement?

We're in conversations with him that I think are very amicable about how much involvement he wants and what kind. We haven't figured out exactly what that is yet. He may say he is involved or he's not involved. We're still very much in conversation with him about what kind of involvement he would propose.

American Horror Story - Season 8 - Twist Coming in Episode 5

But there’s apparently going to be even more stars than before. “You will see so many fan favorites return that you’ll feel like it’s The Love Boat,” teases Murphy. “It’s a very high concept.”

While rumors have swirled that this season is called AHS: Radioactive, Murphy would only admit this one has a massive twist. Says Murphy, who co-created AHS with Brad Falchuk, “It’s a season unlike anything we’ve done because there’s a big hook to it. There’s a huge thing that happens in episode five.”
