Succession - Advance Preview - Boring And Miscast

"Why don’t you worry about the medicine, not the fucking feng shui?"

The Roy family — Logan Roy and his four children — controls one of the biggest media and entertainment conglomerates in the world. SUCCESSION tracks their lives as they contemplate what the future will hold for them once their aging father begins to step back from the company.

Succession has an amazing cast, starting with Brian Cox (Troy, Medici: Masters of Florence), Jeremy Strong (Masters of Sex, The Good Wife), Sarah Snook (The Dressmaker), Kieran Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Fargo), Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049), Alan Ruck (The Exorcist, The Catch, Ferris Bueller's Day Off), and last but definitely not least, Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice, Ripper Street, Howards End).

The Pilot spends most of its time in a hospital while the father, Logan Roy, is being treated and his children try to grapple with the idea that they might have to think of a future without him sooner than they expected. And let me tell you, it was hard not to give up halfway through the first hour, the quality is good and the cast is amazing, but it was just so damn boring.

I was excited to see Matthew Macfayden again and an HBO production seemed like the perfect place, but it was not, his role is as the only daughter's husband and he seems odd in it, the main son's role would have been perfect for him, they should've actually traded places, because Jeremy Strong doesn't sell it.

Honestly I have no idea why this was made, there are some attempts at dark humor, some sort of analysis about family and business, but for the most part, it falls flat, and none of it makes you care about what happens next. As always, these things are subjective, and objectively the quality with HBO is generally good (though there are some odd handheld cam choices that for the life of me I can't figure out why they would use), and the acting is good as well, so if this is your thing, you might want to give it a shot, but personally I don't think I'll be watching.

Succession premieres tonight June 3rd on HBO at 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT. Will you be checking it out? Let me know in the comments.
