01:30 - Star Trek: Discovery - Season 2 - Jonathan Frakes Returning to Direct an Episode Featuring Young Spock
Thanks to Darthlocke4 for the heads up.
According to Jonathan Frakes, who directed an episode in the first season of Star Trek: Discovery, the legendary Spock, everyone’s favorite Vulcan, best friend of James T Kirk and confusing time traveller (in Abrams’s Trek, at least), will make an appearance in the second episode of the upcoming season, which Frakes happens to be directing.
Frakes, speaking at El Paso Comic Con, said that it would not be the adult Spock, however, who at the time of Discovery is a young science officer on board the Enterprise living a peaceful pre-Kirk life, but instead a younger version of the character. This version will appear in flashbacks, where he’ll appear alongside his younger, adopted sister and Discovery protagonist, Michael Burnham.

21:15 - Broad City - Renewed for a 5th and Final Season
COMEDY CENTRAL(R) INKS FIRST LOOK TELEVISION DEAL WITH ILANA GLAZER AND ABBI JACOBSON
FIFTH AND FINAL SEASON OF BROAD CITY PREMIERES IN EARLY 2019
Three Projects Already in Development Include Mall Town USA, Platinum Status, and Young Professionals
NEW YORK, April 12, 2018 - Comedy Central today announced a comprehensive development deal with Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson with a 'first look' at content created and/or developed for television by Glazer and Jacobson, both together and independently. The deal with the multitalented creators, stars, directors and showrunners of the hit series Broad City, which will return for its fifth and final season in early 2019, also extends across all of parent company Viacom's television networks. Three projects already in development at Comedy Central under the new deal include Mall Town USA, Platinum Status, and Young Professionals.
"Broad City's Abbi and Ilana may appear to be aimless and full of hair-brained schemes, but Abbi and Ilana IRL have proven to be stellar creator/writer/performer/director/producers. Their supreme focus on telling new stories, in new worlds, with new talent is nearly scary," said Kent Alterman, President of Comedy Central.
"Broad City has been our baby and first love for almost ten years, since we started as a web series. It's been a phenomenal experience, and we've put ourselves into it completely. Broad City's always had a spontaneous pace and feeling, and ending after season five honors that spirit. We are very excited to bring new voices and points of view to Comedy Central and continue our collaboration together in new ways," said Glazer and Jacobson.
Mall Town USA: Mall Town USA is an animated comedy that follows the afterschool misadventures of a 13-year-old girl navigating the complexities of life in the classic microcosm of American culture that is The Mall. Mall Town USA is written and created by Gabe Liedman (Broad City, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and executive produced by Jacobson and Glazer.
Platinum Status: Set in the hipster-heavy east side of Los Angeles, Platinum Status tells the story of professional back-up singer Noah (Eliot Glazer), a gay guy who's always felt left out of the "community." And after he's dumped by his boyfriend of ten years, Noah rebounds in the least likely way: by hooking up with a girl. With help from his friends Kevin and Mimi and guidance from his kinda-sorta-girlfriend Alexa, Noah tries to evolve both in the bedroom and the recording studio. Eliot Glazer will write and executive produce and Ilana Glazer will also executive produce along with Principato Young's Peter Principato and Brian Steinberg and Electric Avenue's Will Arnett and Marc Forman.
Young Professionals: At age twenty-four, David Litt became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history. Described as the "comic muse for the president," Litt served as the lead writer for many of President Obama's most memorable comedic moments, and his recent memoir, Thanks, Obama, is a New York Times best seller. Inspired by Litt's coming-of-age in our nation's capital, Young Professionals follows five housemates growing up - personally, politically, and professionally - in the hopelessly absurd world of Washington, D.C. Young Professionals is written by and executive produced by Litt, with Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer also serving as executive producers.
Glazer and Jacobson have earned universal praise from fans and critics alike thanks to their dynamic relationship which, combined with impeccable comedic timing and chemistry, has led the series for which they are best known, Broad City, to such accolades as a 2016 Writers Guild Award nomination for "Best Comedy Series," multiple nominations for "Best Comedy Series" by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association and back-to-back Emmy(R) Award nominations for "Outstanding Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series" for their digital offshoot, Hack into Broad City. Created by, written by, executive produced by and starring Glazer and Jacobson, Broad City follows best friends, Abbi and Ilana, as they navigate life in New York, capturing their hookups, relationships, crappy jobs and, ultimately, their badass friendship.

22:35 - Sandstorm - Amazon in Talks to Develop Muammar Gaddafi Drama Series
EXCLUSIVE: Amazon is in talks to develop Sandstorm, a series about notorious Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, who seized power in a coup at the age of 29, and ruled Libya for more than four decades before his bloody demise at the hands of his own countrymen in 2011.
Carter Harris (Bloodline) will write, and Mohamed Diab (Clash) will direct. The project is a co-production between Anonymous Content and O3 Productions, the production arm of MBC Group, the leading media company in the Middle East. Harris and Diab will be executive producers with Tariq Merhab and Nicole Romano of Anonymous Content and Ali Jaafar and Fadi Ismail of O3 Productions. The project originated through a strategic partnership that Anonymous Content forged with O3 Productions to develop content relevant to the Middle East with global appeal.
The aim of Sandstorm is to tell the sprawling life story Gaddafi and Libya’s evolution under his reign, in the style that fact-based drama Narcos did to Pablo Escobar. Gaddafi rose from being the penniless son of an illiterate Bedouin goat herder to the young leader of Libya after King Idris was deposed in a bloodless coup. Among the many things he did was rearrange the relationship that oil rich Middle Eastern countries held with global petroleum corporations, often antagonizing his Saudi Arabian and Iranian neighbors.

22:35 - Foundation - Isaac Asimov TV Series in Development for Straight-to-Series Consideration at Apple
EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation, Apple has nabbed a TV series adaptation of Foundation, the seminal Isaac Asimov science fiction novel trilogy. The project, from Skydance Television, has been put in development for straight-to-series consideration. Deadline revealed last June that Skydance had made a deal with the Asimov estate and that David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman were cracking the code on a sprawling series based on the books that informed Star Wars and many other sci-fi films and TV series. Goyer and Friedman will be executive producers and showrunners. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross also will executive produce.
Originally published as a short story series in Astounding Magazine in 1942, Asimov’s Foundation is the complex saga of humans scattered on planets throughout the galaxy, all living under the rule of the Galactic Empire. The protagonist is a psycho-historian who has an ability to read the future and foresees the empire’s imminent collapse. He sets out to save the knowledge of mankind from being wiped out. Even the Game of Thrones‘ creative team would marvel at the number of empires that rise and fall in Foundation. Asimov’s trilogy has been tried numerous times as a feature film at Fox, Warner Bros (with Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, who greenlit The Lord of the Rings), and then at Sony with Independence Day director Roland Emmerich. Many top sci-fi writers have done scripts and found it daunting to constrict the sprawling saga to a feature film format. Most recently, HBO tried a series with Emmerich and Interstellar co-writer and Westworld exec producer Jonathan Nolan.

17:00 - The War of the Worlds - Rafe Spall, Eleanor Tomlinson, Robert Carlyle & Rupert Graves to Star in BBC's H.G. Well's Alien Invasion Adaptation
Filming has begun in Liverpool on The War of the Worlds, a major adaptation by Peter Harness (Wallander, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell) of H.G. Wells’ classic sci-fi title. This major new three-part drama is produced by Mammoth Screen for BBC One.
Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark, Loving Vincent) and Rafe Spall (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Big Short) lead the cast alongside Robert Carlyle (T2:Trainspotting, Once Upon A Time) and Rupert Graves (Swimming with Men, Sherlock) in the first British television adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic novel. The War of the Worlds will be directed by award-winning director Craig Viveiros (And Then There Were None, Rillington Place) and produced by Betsan Morris Evans, (NW, The City in The City).
Set in Edwardian England, this new adaptation of H.G. Wells' seminal tale - the first alien invasion story in literature - follows George (played by Rafe Spall) and his partner Amy (Eleanor Tomlinson) as they attempt to defy society and start a life together. Rupert Graves is Frederick, George's elder brother, and Robert Carlyle plays Ogilvy, an astronomer and scientist. The War of the Worlds tells their story as they face the escalating terror of an alien invasion, fighting for their lives against an enemy beyond their comprehension.
Eleanor Tomlinson says: “I’m delighted to be taking on the Martians with Rafe Spall in Mammoth Screen’s adaptation of The War Of The Worlds. I’ve been a fan of Craig Viveiros’ work for a while, so creating this world with him at the helm is very exciting.”
Rafe Spall says: “I am thrilled to be a part of bringing this much loved story to the small screen. I couldn’t be in better company with Craig Viveiros, Peter Harness, all at Mammoth Screen and of course, the very talented Eleanor Tomlinson.”
Damien Timmer, Executive Producer of Mammoth Screen, says: "Here we are, making the original and best alien invasion story for the BBC One audience - it doesn't get much better than this! With a stellar cast and some very scary Martians up our sleeve we look forward to terrifying large sections of the audience soon!’
Tommy Bulfin, BBC Commissioning Editor, says: "It’s fantastic to have Rafe and Eleanor leading such a brilliant cast of British acting talent in the BBC's faithful adaptation of H.G. Wells' legendary story."
Craig Viveiros, Director, says: “H.G. Wells' seminal novel has been adapted for the screen many times but it's always had a contemporary (and American) setting, this is the first version to be set in London and the Home Counties during the Edwardian period. Peter's scripts manage to honour the source material with great skill, but we aim to provide a thoroughly modern thrill ride for the audience, delivering an alien invasion story that will shock and awe audiences across the globe.”
Peter Harness says: "The version of The War of the Worlds that I wanted to make is one that's faithful to the tone and the spirit of the book, but which also feels contemporary, surprising and full of shocks: a collision of sci-fi, period drama and horror. There is nothing cosy or predictable about Wells’ novel, and that’s what I want to capture in the show. We have an incredible cast, a brilliant director and a wonderful crew - and I can’t wait for them to explode the terrifying story of the first alien invasion on to our screens.”
Music for the show will be scored by, critically acclaimed composer Russ Davies and cinematographer is James Friend BSC (Rillington Place). The award-winning design team includes production designer Pat Campbell (Rillington Place), costume designer Howard Burden (The War Bride) and make-up designer Vickie Lang (An Adventure in Space and Time).
The War of the Worlds is a Mammoth Screen drama for BBC One. The executive producers are Damien Timmer, Preethi Mavahalli, Peter Harness, Craig Viveiros for Mammoth Screen and Tommy Bulfin for the BBC.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment will be responsible for international distribution.
