Empire - Sweet Sorrow - Review: Family Issues

These latest episodes of Empire seem more focused on the family and the main 5 characters. After last week shocking twist, Cookie comes back home. As Cookie’s father years before, she had a heart attack and she goes into surgery.

Lucious wants to keep his family together and both Andre and Jamal try to fix their mistakes. On the one hand, Jamal has a live TV interview with Robin Roberts, but it doesn’t go as planned: he admits on national television that he doesn’t regret shooting Angelo. He got what he deserved. On the other hand, Andre is still full of guilt. He doesn’t know how to make up for his huge mistake, but in the end, he lets his instinct help the company. He discovers that Eddie is not acting honestly inside the company and he wants to sell it. This escalates to a confrontation with Lucious and Cookie and it doesn’t end well for him.
Meanwhile, Hakeem and Tiana have to work on their song and they find a common ground in order to make Cookie happy. After breaking up with him, Becky finally reveals to J. Poppa the truth about her pregnancy. He decides to support her in this difficult decision.

After trying to keep Cookie safe under the care of her sisters Candace and Carol, Lucious ends up having a confrontation with her wife. Even if she didn’t want to stop to handle her business, she comes to a realization that she doesn’t want to die and leave everything behind, now that she finally got what she deserved. The two share a tender moment. I liked this episode: Taraji P. Henson shined in the last part of the episode. I really loved how they are evolving the relationship between the Lyon patriarch and Cookie. I hope they won’t destroy this new-born union. I really don’t understand the direction that they are giving to Jamal.

All in all, this second part of Empire’s fourth season is more coherent and interesting than last year’s third season arc. I hope they will keep this rhythm. And you? What do you think of "Sweet Sorrow"?
