Javier Bardem is set to star as Hernan Cortes, the explorer who overthrew the Aztec empire for the Spanish
The Amblin series created for television by Steven Zaillian

SEATTLE -- Mar. 26, 2018 -- (NASDAQ: AMZN) - Amazon Studios today announced it has greenlit a straight-to-series order of a four-hour miniseries based on the epic saga of Hernan Cortes. The series, from three-time Academy Award-winner Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan) and Amblin Television, is created for television and written by Academy Award-winner Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List) and based on the screenplay by Dalton Trumbo (Roman Holiday). Emmy-winning Zaillian, Emmy-winning Darryl Frank (The Americans) and Emmy-nominated Justin Falvey (The Americans) are set to executive produce, and Academy Award-winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) is set to star and executive produce.

Cortes reveals the legendary conqueror, Hernan Cortes, who led a rebellious expedition to the heart of King Montezuma II's Aztec empire, connecting two civilizations for the first time and changing the course of history.

"Cortes' epic discoveries shaped the world as we know it today, and through the minds of Amblin, Steven Spielberg, Steve Zaillian and Javier Bardem, we will bring Prime Video members on an exhilarating journey," said Sharon Yguado, Head of Scripted Series, Amazon Studios. "There are few moments in history that shape an entire culture such as Cortes' story, and this series will be one filled with drama and adventure."

"We are so pleased that Amazon has given us the opportunity to bring this exciting 500-year-old story to Prime Video members worldwide. It is a part of history that had such a significant impact and largely influenced modern day civilizations. With Javier as Cortes, we have the perfect star for this role, and we can't wait to get started," said Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, co-heads of Amblin Television.

"It is a privilege to tell this epic story - one that is full of drama and conflict within this huge, historical spectacle where two distant civilizations clash at the height of their reign," said Javier Bardem. "The best and worst of human nature came to life in all its light and darkness. As an actor, there is no better challenge than to serve such a unique project that I have been passionate about for years, and I am thrilled to be working with this dream team of Steven Spielberg, Steven Zaillian and Amazon."

04:45 - Street Fighter - TV Series Based On Video Game Franchise in Development

Entertainment One/Mark Gordon has closed a deal to develop, produce and finance a TV series adaptation of the popular Street Fighter global video game franchise, with Joey Ansah, Jacqueline Quella and Mark Wooding, the team behind the live-action web series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, set to executive produce. eOne will handle international sales on the project.

Street Fighter the series will draw on the game’s World Warrior story-arc — introduced in the 1991 Street Fighter II: The World Warrior sequel to the original game — as the jumping off point, centering on four protagonists: Ryu, Ken, Guile and Chun-Li. Together, they fight to take down M. Bison, the evil mastermind who runs Shadaloo, a global criminal organization. Though on different journeys, our heroes’ paths will cross as they are drawn into the World Warrior Tournament, a competition devised by M. Bison to find the most powerful and capable fighter in the world. On the journey they come to share, they must draw on their strength, skills, intelligence and loyalty in a battle to survive and emerge as the World Warrior.

“Street Fighter is a global tour de force franchise, having garnered immense worldwide commercial success and built a vast devoted fanbase that has only grown through its 30 year legacy. We are thrilled to be teaming up with Joey, Jacqueline and Mark, who are already so deeply connected to this brand, to bring this adored story to television audiences everywhere,” said Mark Gordon, eOne’s President and Chief Content Officer, Film, Television and Digital. “A particular strength of Street Fighter is the wide range of ethnically diverse characters and powerful women featured in the game. It will allow us to build an inclusive and engaging TV universe.”

18:00 - Homecoming - Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Brooke Bloom, Ayden Mayeri & Jacob Pitts to Recur in Amazon Series

Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without A Trace), Brooke Bloom (Gypsy), Ayden Mayeri (New Girl) and Jacob Pitts (The Sinner) have been cast in recurring roles opposite Julia Roberts, Bobby Cannavale and Stephan James in Homecoming, the half-hour drama from Universal Cable Productions, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and Anonymous Content, which has a two-season straight-to-series order at Amazon. In addition, Fran Kranz (Major Crimes) is set for a guest role.

Based on Gimlet Media’s breakout fictional podcast, Homecoming is written by the podcast’s creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg and directed by Esmail. It is a psychological thriller that centers on Heidi (Roberts), a caseworker at a secret government facility, and a soldier (James) eager to rejoin civilian life.

Jean-Baptiste will play Gloria, Walter Cruz’s (James) mother, who is anti-military, anti-government, anti-everything and grows suspicious about what may be happening with Walter at the facility. Bloom will portray Pam, Carrasco’s (Whigham) boss at the Department of Defense. She’s ambitious but weary; mostly she just wants the minimum amount of trouble. Mayeri will play Reina, the receptionist at the Homecoming Facility. Pitts will portray AJ, who is exploring several new business ventures. Kranz will guest star as Ron, Colin’s (Cannavale) boss at Geist Emergent (Homecoming’s parent company).

22:35 - MOVIES: Men In Black Reboot - Tessa Thompson Joins Cast

Tessa Thompson is joining her Thor: Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth in Sony's Men in Black reboot.

Fate of the Furious filmmaker F. Gary Gray is set to direct the movie, written by Iron Man screenwriters Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. The studio has the film dated for June 14, 2019.

Akin to how Jurassic World revived the Jurassic Park film series, Sony’s reboot is to feature new characters rather than Agents K and J, portrayed by original trilogy stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, respectively, and will build on the contemporary sci-fi world in which they operated.

Details are being kept hidden under a New York City ventilation tower, but sources say the new project is more of an ensemble piece than a two-hander and will be more global in scope.

Hemsworth's deal isn't closed but is expected to.

13:30 - Titans - Season 1 - Maroni Family and Tony Zucco to Appear
Thanks to production photos below, one trailer is dedicated to “Stunt Maroni 1,” which seemingly confirms that Sal Maroni himself, along with his crime family, will appear in the highly anticipated DC series based on the popular comic.

This ties into the appearance of Tony Zucco, a character deeply seeded in Batman and Robin mythos. Zucco is responsible for the murder of Dick Grayson’s family. This would lead Bruce Wayne to adopting the young Grayson and him later becoming Robin. Batman and Robin would later track down Zucco and have him arrested for his crimes. This also essentially confirms that Titans will adapt elements of Batman: Dark Victory where Zucco is portrayed as a low-level thug working for Sal Maroni.

18:00 - Lord of the Rings - Amazon Series Reported to Cost $500 Million

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel will cost the company an estimated $500 million, according to Reuters.

The rights alone to a piece of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy franchise apparently cost the company $250 million. Amazon has made a deal for two seasons, and the production and marketing costs for both should total around another $250 million. This would make the LOTR project easily the most expensive TV series ever made.

In fact, it’s more than it cost Peter Jackson to make all three movies in his Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, at least, before their marketing costs (according to Box Office Mojo).

And the Amazon drama will have the additional challenge — some might say benefit — of not being a reboot of the familiar tale of Frodo and the One Ring. Instead, the Amazon project will be a prequel series based on Tolkien’s works with an as-yet-unreleased story line.

By comparison, HBO spends about $15 million per episode on GoT at this point — probably a bit more for the upcoming final season — plus marketing costs.

18:00 - Camping - Ione Skye Joins HBO Comedy

Ione Skye is the latest addition to the cast of the upcoming HBO series “Camping,” which hails from “Girls” creators Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner.

Skye has been cast in the series regular role of Carleen, who has spent her life in the shadows as a sister, as a hospice worker and as an unsuccessful equestrian. It has left her meek, terrified and relying on her own strange passions, like crocheting with polyester yarn, to get her through the lonely days.

18:00 - Stranger Things - Season 3 - Cast Receive Major Salary Increases

The rise is especially dramatic for the young stars who were mostly newcomers before being cast in Stranger Things, reportedly pulling in about $30,000 an episodes the first two seasons. I hear their per-episode fee will go up to more than $200,000 an episodes and possibly around $250,000.

Brown, who emerged as the breakout star of Stranger Things, is believed to have landed a bigger raise than her young counterparts.

Ryder and Harbour, who were established actors with sizable resumes, started higher and I hear will remain ahead of their younger co-stars, including Brown. I hear their new salaries are north of 300,000, approaching 350,000 an episode.

Also getting a bump are the other Stranger Things series regulars, including Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, whose new paychecks are said to be in the $100,000-$150,000 range.
