At last night’s Paleyfest celebration of Supernatural, we were treated to an advance screening of the March 29th episode “ScoobyNatural.” The episode is directed by Robert Singer and written by the team of Jim Krieg and Jeremy Adams. Both Kreig and Adams are Scooby-Doo writers, but they do a really good job with the Supernatural side of the equation. The audience at Paleyfest certainly enjoyed the episode if the laughter and screaming were any indication!
I’m not going to spoil a lot of the episode because I want everyone to be able to enjoy it. If you are a Scooby-Doo fan – or at least watched it as a kid, I think this is going to be a fan favorite. The animation is pretty good. I do think they do a better job capturing Jared Padalecki (Sam) and Misha Collins (Castiel) than Jensen Ackles (Dean), but I also thought it was better than the previous animated series.
Naturally, there is a great new titlecard for the episode. The teaser includes a plushie monster – be prepared to be dropped right into the action! The episode was actually written and recorded a year ago – for the animation. The live action was done more recently. Unlike most animation voice overs, Ackles commented that this episode was a lot more fun and dynamic because they all got to record it together.
Some of my favorite moments in the episode were Cas being compared to a talking dog, Dean really, really enjoying road food, and Dean adding his own signature tag line to those of the Scooby gang. There was only one thing that I really wanted to see that didn’t happen… and I’ll let you in on what that was when I review the episode in depth.
Clearly, the Scooby-Doo writers did their homework. Dean recognizes that once they find themselves in the cartoon, that maybe the only way out is by playing their part – as they did in “Changing Channels.” There’s even a nice reference to maybe this is Loki – and Sam maintains that he’s dead… Dean is, of course, a huge fan of the show and relates that wherever their dad left them as kids, there was always a tv and the Scooby gang. Naturally, he has a thing for Daphne…
Dean’s inside knowledge lets him recognize the episode as “A Night of Fright Is No Delight” – and I’ll admit that I recognized it too! If you are a Scooby-Doo fan – look for their signature theme song to make an appearance – and I loved Cas joining in on the tiptoeing investigation. Look for Velma to remark, “Those shoulders! Jinkies!”
Be sure to tune in on March 29th at 8/7c on the CW for the episode! And I'll be back with a post on the red carpet!
