HBO TCA 2018 - Updates on True Detective, Deadwood Movie & More

The long-gestating Deadwood movie is slowly but surely moving toward production. During HBO’s portion of TCA, HBO president Casey confirmed that the network is looking at fall 2018 for production to start.

“Assuming that we could get all the actors back together, I think this is something we would do possibly next fall, fall 2018,” he told Deadline. Talks with the cast are currently underway, focusing on their scheduling availability.

Armando Iannucci’s space comedy pilot: “The script is brilliant, really, really funny.” It will be shot later this year.

Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen pilot: “I’ve read the script, it’s amazing. I’m thrilled, I imagine we’ll shoot that this year.

The second season of Emmy and Golden Globe winner Big Little Lies and True Detective season three, however, are slated for 2019.

Have you read all six episodes [of Game of Thrones]? Do you know how it ends?

They're great. It's fantastic. The fans are going to be very, very happy.

In this era of leaving the door open for revivals or undoing finales so you can revive it down the line…

That's not happening. This story, A Song of Fire and Ice, is done. There's no revival, reboot, spinoff talk.

Word is you're bringing in actresses to play the mother to Alexander Skarsgard and Zoe Kravitz's characters.

Maybe!

“There is not going to be anything in any scenario where we have any sort of prequel air for at least a year after that,” HBO president Casey Bloys told Deadline at TCA. “I want the final season of Game of Thrones to be the final season of Game Of Thrones, I don’t want to use it to launch something else, I want it to stand as the finale of the greatest tv show of all time, I don’t want to do anything that infringes on that.”

There is no update on the followup HBO series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Confederate, which stirred controversy with its subject matter, involving modern-day slavery.

“Dave and David are in production on Game of Thrones, they are still talking (about Confederate) but it’s going to be a year year, year and a half before there is anything,” Bloys said. “They have to finish GOT.” He confirmed that the project’s creative team, which also includes co-writers Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Malcolm Spellman, remains intact.

And in case you’re wondering, “the Deadwood movie” is literally movie length — two hours, Bloys confirmed, so don’t expect a miniseries.

This is how HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys explained it to us, and he’s not a guy who’s big on giving viewers false hope: “Assuming we can get the actors — their deals and schedules lined up — and the budget, which I think is close, we’re going to do this possibly in ’18 sometime,” Bloys said. “There are a lot of logistics that have to come together. The actors are on different shows. Assuming we can get them together, it’s looking very good.”

Director Andrea Arnold is readying for the shoot and David E. Kelley is penning the scripts [for Big Little Lies season 2]. It’s expected to run seven episodes, just like the first round.

“There are more straight-to-series decisions,” he said. “It’s tough because when you do that there are other things out there that you may not be able to do. It makes you think about your priorities.”

The five Game of Thrones prequel spinoffs currently in development at HBO will not feature any existing characters, HBO president Casey Bloys confirms to TVLine. However, the exec is quick to add that “there may be [familiar] bloodlines” in the potential series.
