Atlanta Robbin Season TCA Teases

Entitled “Atlanta Robbin’ Season,” the second season of the 2017 Emmy winner will take place during a time when the city Earn (Donald Glover) and Alfred aka Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) is going through some changes. “Robbin’ Season” refers to the time around Christmas when, for the first time, there is an influx of money in an impoverished area, and people are trying to get that money and also get holiday gifts — which makes people very “tense and desperate” and often causes crime to increase.

“It’s a very dangerous, uncertain time in the city. So everybody’s shaken up a little bit this year, and everybody has to make important decisions,” Stephen said. “‘Robbin’ Season’ is kind of like a metaphor for all of our characters.”

“Are you gonna eat or are you gonna be eaten?” Donald Glover said. “I think that’s something people don’t realize. Black people have to make a choice. That choice defines who you are. It’s hard.” Glover said it was “surreal” that his brother, Stephen, rented an Airbnb two houses away from where they grew up.

“I didn’t want to stay there, but when you make last-minute arrangements on Airbnb, you take what you can get,” Stephen Glover said. Which instantly raised his brother’s ire: “If you want to see some racist shit, get on Airbnb!”

Henry, who couldn’t go anywhere without being recognized, had to isolate himself. Working on season two was much harder, he said, but it was worth it to work and live in that environment. One night, production suspended filming because of a shootout.

“At the end of the day, it’s where their lives were,” Henry said.
It’s where the environment was and that’s the universe we were creating. That’s literally why it’s called robbin’ season. That fear, that uncertainty, that not knowing. Not that you forget your old life, but now it’s different, so what do you do?”

It’s like living inside of a contradiction, Donald Glover said: “Am I gonna sell drugs or am I gonna be a celebrity? You can do both. You can’t be a famous drug dealer. I mean, you can, but it’s not gonna work out well.”

“We talked a lot about ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation,’ the Tiny Toons, which was a show we all really liked,” Donald Glover told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour Friday. “That was the inspiration for season 2.”

Tiny Toon Adventures was a ’90s animated comedy that featured a take on younger versions of the Looney Tunes characters as they attend Acme Looniversity. “How I Spent My Vacation” was a direct-to-video film that featured the same characters, following them during their summer vacation, which later aired as four separate episodes of Tiny Toon Adventures.

Stephen went on to explain that the episodes of Summer Vacation were broken up into several episodes, between 8 and 9, and that viewers could watch them all together as if they were a movie or separately in installments. "They would play them during the summer together, and we kind of took that idea — a whole story but being told in a bunch of different parts," he said, with his brother noting: "You enjoy them more when they’re all together but you can also enjoy them in little bits."
