KATHRYN NEWTON, KIM RHODES, KATHERINE RAMDEEN, BRIANA BUCKMASTER, CLARK BACKO AND YADIRA GUEVARA-PRIP RETURN – When Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) go missing, Jody Mills (guest star Kim Rhodes) calls Claire Novak (guest star Kathryn Newton), the rebellious rogue hunter, and tells her it is time to come home – they need to find the Winchesters. Claire returns and reunites with Alex Jones (guest star Katherine Ramdeen), who has stayed behind with Jody and tries to balance a “normal” life with being a part time hunter. While Jody is happy to have Claire home again, she’s plagued by Patience’s (guest star Clark Backo) disturbing vision involving her adopted daughter. Claire and Alex search for Kaia Nieves (guest star Yadira Guevara-Prip), the dreamcatcher responsible for opening the rift that Sam and Dean went through, as she holds the key to their whereabouts. Jody calls her friend, Donna Hanscum (guest star Briana Buckmaster), to round out the team and the women head off on the most important hunt of their lives. Phil Sgriccia directed the episode written by Robert Berens and Andrew Dabb (#1310). Original airdate 1/18/2018.

Thanks to Tawrens for the heads up.
Airing during Supernatural‘s 13th season, Wayward follows what executive producer Robert Berens calls a “prodigal-return narrative,” as Claire, a recurring character on the flagship series, is reunited with two other familiar faces: Jody (Kim Rhodes), her caretaker of sorts, and Alex (Katherine Ramdeen), her sister of sorts. She’ll also meet the recently introduced Patience (Clark Backo), a psychic, and Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip), a dreamwalker. Together with Supernatural fan favorite Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster), the women form the #squadgoals of supernatural hunting. That is, if Claire stays. “The core of the pilot is her internal conflict between being with the team and trying to be on her own,” Newton says.

THR Interview
But while it's not solely just based on gender, it is so exciting to finally see a piece of the Supernatural world populated with so many strong female characters. Given the climate of the industry today, why was it the right time to do this?
Berens: Giving the spotlight to women and getting them to be centered in that [Sam and Dean] way is exciting because it's new. A lot of what we're seeing is Supergirl-like characters, and something that's special about Supernatural that becomes even more special when it's about women is that these are human beings. They're mortal fighters. They get beat up, they get bloodied, they get emotionally devastated. There's something very grounded about the central characters of Supernatural and having female heroes who are women doing extraordinary things, that's a very special and exciting thing that I don't think we've seen that much of yet.
