30th October 2018 - Cathy Yan Confirms R Rating

“I could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong  and relateable. So I went in with, not with confidence, but at least a sense that I belonged in the room, that somehow magically in terms of timing and luck that this opportunity was open to me and I was definitely going to make the best of it.”

Asked whether there would be Eastern elements in the Birds of Prey, Yan answered, “Yes and no.  The tone of the film is similar to that in my films. There is a half-Asian character and our screenwriter (Christina Hodson) is half Chinese and she’s sneaking little bits in.”

Meanwhile, over the course of the next few years, the studio was exploring other Harley Quinn spin-offs. But I was not a part of those versions, I was always focused on this one with Christina… I know that they were exploring ‘Gotham City Sirens’ with David Ayer, and I know they were exploring a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, and they were exploring doing I don’t know what else. I wasn’t a part of those. I was focusing on this. I kept presenting it to the studio until they felt it was at a point where they were ready to do it. And now we’re all in.”

17th April 2018 - Cathy Yan in Negotiations to Direct Harley Quinn Spinoff

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros and DC Entertainment have chosen Cathy Yan to be the director of an untitled girl gang movie, likely the next superhero film to be graced by Suicide Squad scene-stealer Harley Quinn, in the form of Margot Robbie. A deal has to be completed, but it is expected that Yan will become the second female filmmaker to join the DC club after Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins, and the first female Asian director ever tapped to direct a superhero film.

This is a bold bet for Warner Bros’ Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada, who oversee DC under Toby Emmerich. Yan got the job over numerous well established male directors, and because she is taking this giant leap with just one small-budget indie movie under her belt. That would be Dead Pigs, a film that won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance last January. Despite being a new talent, Yan’s presentation for Birds of Prey was exceptional, and Robbie held firm to her desire for this film to be directed by a woman.

The project is based on Birds of Prey, which in the DC universe teams Quinn with several other crime fighters, namely Black Canary, Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) and Huntress. It is not confirmed if all of them will be characters in the film. What is clear is that both the main characters and most of the creative braintrust are female, remarkable for a studio-sized superhero film. The script was written by Christina Hodson, who wrote the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, and just got hired to write the Batgirl movie.

This film looks cleared to start production by year’s end or early next year, after Robbie completes Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She is negotiating to star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in the Quentin Tarantino-directed film for Sony Pictures. The other Harley Quinn films are still under construction. That includes the Suicide Squad sequel to be directed by Gavin O’Connor. Two others, Harley Quinn Vs The Joker and Gotham City Sirens with Suicide Squad helmer David Ayer, seem further in the distance.

1st December 2017 - Margot Robbie Working on Her Own Female-Centric Harley Quinn Movie

Thanks to Dumble for the heads up.

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was undoubtedly the breakout character of last year’s Suicide Squad, so it’s unsurprising that the actor and Warner Bros. are developing a spinoff project for the character. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that it’s just one of a number of Harley-centric movies in development, and this latest one she's speaking of doesn't seem to have been reported on before.

This movie, she told MTV's Josh Horowitz, was “totally separate” from projects like Gotham City Sirens, the Joker/Harley team-up movie or Suicide Squad 2. “There’s a lot going on right now,” Robbie continued. “Honestly, I don’t think anyone knows what’s going to be the next thing to happen, but I think everyone is keen to get Harley back onscreen so everyone is working on lots of different versions of what that could be.”

Robbie’s personal vision for Harley’s next step is one that could fit either a solo movie or Gotham City Sirens, as it turns out. “I want to see her with other women. I kept saying when we were shooting Suicide Squad, ‘She needs her girlfriends,’ she needs other girls around her because she loves that. You see it in the comics. She loves meeting people, any people, but she needs her girl gang.”
