"At Freeform, we are committed to our audience and this past year, we refined our programming strategy to be a destination place for trendsetting originals that champion youth culture," said Tom Ascheim, President, Freeform. "Our upcoming slate is the biggest, boldest and most diverse it's ever been--we look forward to making each show it's own event and delivering empowering and entertaining originals to our viewers."

Wednesday’s comedy block kicks off with grown-ish, a half-hour comedy tackling current social issues and complexities facing both students and administrators, it follows Zoey, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) popular, entitled, stylish and socially active 17-year-old daughter from ABC’s Emmy®-nominated comedy black-ish, as she heads into her freshman year of college.

Yara Shahidi (black-ish) will continue to play Zoey Johnson, Trevor Jackson (Burning Sands, American Crime) as Aaron Jackson, Jordan Buhat (Summer of ‘84) as Vivek Shah, Emily Arlook (The Good Place, Hand of God) as Nomi Segal, Francia Raisa (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) as Ana Torres, Chris Parnell (SNL) as Dean Parker, and Deon Cole (black-ish) as Charlie Telphy. Chloe Bailey, Halle Bailey, and Luka Sabbat also recur in the series. Kenya Barris, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland and E. Brian Dobbins are executive producers of the series. grown-ish is produced by ABC Signature Studios.

Thanks to johnhelvete for the heads up.

Beginning in January, the Disney-owned network will shift from two nights of originals to four in a bid to use its extensive film library to better launch scripted programming, with such movies as Harry Potter and Twilight serving as lead-ins and lead-outs. The push will entail doubling its number of pilot orders and adding 10 to 20 more hours of current originals than the network aired in 2017. The goal is to have first-run originals from January through September, with Halloween and Christmas programming blocks airing in the final quarter.

"We see it as an opportunity to be competitive," Freeform executive vp programming and development Karey Burke tells The Hollywood Reporter. "No other scripted cable channel has original programming at 8 p.m., and that is this network's strongest time period."

A new plan is necessary, as Freeform shed about 4 million subscribers in the past three years and saw its primetime viewership among 18- to 34-year-olds drop about 20 percent for the first half of the year.
