SpoilerTV's Most Anticipated 2017/2018 Broadcast Shows + POLL

Sep 2, 2017

The 2017/2018 fall/winter season is here!

Last year time travel shows dominated the airwaves (Timeless, Time After Time, Making History and on cable, Travellers). This year will be military dramas with Valor on the CW, SEAL Team on CBS, and The Brave on NBC. All that in addition to the yearly dose of new procedurals, medical dramas, and superhero television.

The following are the most anticipated new broadcast shows as voted by the SpoilerTV team.

Make sure to vote for what you are looking for in the poll below!

THE GOOD DOCTOR (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 8.08; Chosen by Abi, Angela, Jaz, Laura, Marko, Saloni). Premiere: September 25, 2017

THE GOOD DOCTOR, created by Daniel Dae Kim and David Shore, follows Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome at the pediatric department of San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. There he uses his talents to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues, while guided by his mentor, Aaron Glassman (Emmy winner Richard Schiff).

Based off the acclaimed, short-lived South Korean medical drama of the same name, created by David Shore (House), starring Freddie Highmore, fresh off his revered portrayal of Norman Bates in Bates Motel, and veteran actor Richard Schiff, The Good Doctor has all the makings of a hit.

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

"My FAVORITE pilot so far. It's got to be this season's breakout show. Freddie Highmore is an amazing lead who I already feel a connection with. He made me laugh and cry with him and not at him which is a step up in terms of Autism representation. This is going to be one of my favorite shows" - Jaz

"Simply beautiful. This may be my new favourite show this year!" - Tyler

"A flawed pilot with great potential. Freddie Highmore was freaking brilliant." - Marko Pekic

"Highmore is an absolute star and does so much within the confines of his character. The 7 rating is in regards to an array of clunky dialogue that plagues many of the other characters and some really ridiculously contrived situations. There is strong potential here as long as the show can tighten up its dialogue and character development. I do recommend giving this one at least a trial place on your Fall schedule." - Aimee

-----------------------

REVERIE (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: N/A; Chosen by Abi, Kollin, Laura, Luana, Milo, Samantha). Premiere: TBA 2018

A psychological sci-fi thriller for NBC, Reverie stars Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest) as a former hostage negotiator who is “brought in to save ordinary people who have lost themselves in a highly advanced virtual-reality program in which you can literally live your dreams.”

The series is created by Mickey Fisher whose sole credits include the mixed reviewed, Extant. Actress Sarah Shahi garnered quite the fan following for her stint on acclaimed action thriller Person of Interest. Can she lead her own show? Reverie certainly has a premise with a ton of potential. Watch for it in 2018 with a shortened 10-episode season.

-----------------------

BLACK LIGHTNING (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: N/A); Chosen by Abi, Jennise, Laura, Samantha). Premiere: TBA 2018

Based off the DC comics of the titular hero who is forced out of retirement upon the rise of a gang and the increase of crime and corruption in his community.

Though part of the DC family on the same network as the Arrow-verse, show runner Greg Berlanti confirmed there is no crossover planned as of yet, though a possibility of it happening is not ruled out. Can Black Lighting follow in the footsteps of its DC counterparts and become another hit for the CW? It is definitely the most promising new show on the network.

-----------------------

THE GIFTED (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 8.67; Chosen by Marko, Milo, Samantha). Premiere: October 2, 2017

The most hyped of all the broadcast shows this season, THE GIFTED follows two parents who take their family on the run after they find out their kids have mutant abilities.

Starring fan favourites Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker, and set in the X-Men universe, the show is expected to be a major hit for FOX.

The children are portrayed by Natalie Alan Lind and Percy Hynes White, and they are joined by a strong supporting cast that includes Sean Teale, Jamie Chung, Coby Bell, Emma Dumont, and Blair Redford.

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

"The Gifted is hands down the best new pilot of the season. They immediately begin building out the world the series exists within and don't spend an outrageous amount of time on exposition that can be dealt with in shorter bursts throughout the episode. The ending will leave audiences craving to know what comes next. An exceptional cast, solid writing, compelling characters, intense action sequences, and a terrific plot makes this one a must watch." - Amy

"A really good start to what will no doubt be an awesome show" - Jamie

"Standard mutant/superhero fare with dry writing and an over serious tone, even Stan Lee's cameo was one of the most grave we've ever seen" - Kollin

"Expected a bit more, felt like they've tried to do a bit too much. Very strong performances by Nathalie & Amy, especially Nathalie. A lot of potential in general." - Marco

-----------------------

THE MAYOR (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 6.92; Chosen by Angela, Jaz, Laura) Premiere: October 3, 2017

A struggling hip-hop artist runs for mayor to promote his mix-tape and wins.

Starring: Brandon Michael Hall, Yvette Nicolle Brown, Lea Michelle

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

"Now this was really good. It has a great cast, some fun, topical jokes and looks like a really solid addition to ABC's lineup. Easily one of the most promising shows of the fall season that I've seen so far." - Milo-MJ

"Not as strong as I was expecting from ABC comedies but still good and promising. Yvette Nicole Brown was a big standout for me, she has some great scenes. There is some great dialogue and important messages in the show. Could use some tighter editing and a clearer focus." - Nirat Anoop

"...whilst some interesting social issues are brought up, the plot is extremely predictable, the main character isn't very likeable and the supporting cast is where the laughs are based. Needs a bit of work to find itself" - Samantha Benjamin

"Charming, great cast, and some dope writing at times. This could be a hit if ABC plays their cards right..." - Laura Markus

-----------------------

GHOSTED (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 4.40; Chosen by Laura, Milo, Saloni) Premiere: October 1, 2017

GHOSTED is a paranormal sitcom following a skeptic and a "true believer" in the paranormal who are recruited to investigate unexplained activities in Los Angeles.

The comedy stars a pair of two dependable funny men in Craig Robinson and Adam Scott who were brilliant together in Hot Tub Time Machine.

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

"Solid. Expected less to be honest. Neat cliffhanger" - Marko Pekic

"Very few laughs, it was pretty terrible." - Luana

"I was hoping that its gonna be really great, but sadly its not. It was OK and I liked a few scenes, but I don''t think I'm gonna watch anymore episodes. But I liked the special effects, they were looking cool." - Bence

"It was only okay. Could work in later episodes. if you liked Special Unit 2 this might be your cuppa tea." - Prpleight

-----------------------

THE RESIDENT (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 8.33; Chosen by Jaz, Marko) Premiere: TBD

THE RESIDENT "centers on an idealistic young doctor who begins his first day under the supervision of a tough, brilliant senior resident who pulls the curtain back on all of the good and evil in modern day medicine."

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

"Very promising. Doesn't try to be a realistic or medically correct series, and that plays in favor of some intriguing character development. Will be watching." - Jimmy Ryan

"I enjoyed it a lot, it somehow avoids the feeling you're watching a typical medical procedural." - Luana

"The Resident has a lot to juggle and whilst it doesn't always succeed, there are some promising signs that it could turn into something interesting. It's not always accurate with the medical side of things - but it moves along at a quick, brisk pace with a very pop heavy soundtrack. If you like the genre then you'll dig this, especially as it caters to its target audience well, but don't go in expecting anything mind-blowing." - Milo-MJ

"They've tried to do a lot in just 42 minutes but it is graced with great performances and messed up relationships. Intrigued to see where it goes from here." - Marko Pekic

-----------------------

WISDOM OF THE CROWD(Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 6.71; Chosen by Jennise) Premiere: October 1, 2017

WISDOM OF THE CROWD stars the charismatic Jeremy Piven in an unusually serious role as a tech innovator who creates a crowd-sourcing app to solve his daughter's murder, in turn revolutionizing crime solving in San Francisco.

Add another procedural to CBS' lineup. Can the presence of Jeremy Piven make this show a success?

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

"Another crime procedural, but this one has an interesting twist on the subject, as well as an overarching story. Definitely adding to my watch list." - Joey Hedrick

"A lot like A.P.B. but it does the emotional stuff a lot better." - Luana

"Another CBS crime show, another tech-driven procedural, that’s a shallow take on some complex issues." - Popcultureguy

-----------------------

THE ORVILLE (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 6.43; Chosen by Kollin) Premiere: October 10, 2017

Seth Macfarlane's foray into live action television, THE ORVILLE is a sci-fi dramedy exploring the crew of the U.S.S. Orville set 400 years into the future. The show also stars Macfarlane with Adrianne Palicki, Scott Grimes, & Peter Macon among others making up the eclectic cast.

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

"...it has a unique sense of humor and while the jokes don't always come across as they perhaps had been intended there are some moments that are laugh out loud funny and they more than make up for the less funny parts. There is a beautiful blend of humor and heart that could make this show something special. Be sure to give the show a chance because it's surprisingly good and the chemistry between the cast is drastically better than expected." - Aimee

"The humour is hit or miss, but when it hits, it hits, mixed in with a surprising dose of heart and drama, at least, more than you'd expect for a space farce." - Kollin Lore

"...some of the jokes really fall flat, but then there are moments (one line in particular) where I was howling with laughter & it's got a lot of heart."- Samantha Benjamin

"One of the worst Pilots I have seen the whole season. Not funny, poorly written with top many unfunny hits towards the female lead, slightly misogynist IMO." - Marko

-----------------------

S.W.A.T (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 6.00; Chosen by Angela) Premiere: NOVEMBER 2, 2017

Based on the film of the same name, which in itself was based off a 1975 series, S.W.A.T. brings Shemar Moore from CBS' former hit procedural, Criminal Minds, into a leading role as Sergeant Hondo, who leads a special forces team to fight crime in the streets of L.A.

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

"Shemar Moore brings the same sort of mix of commanding presence and thoughtful compassion to this show that I loved in his portrayal of Morgan (Criminal Minds), and I hope the show keeps its focus on the politics/topical side of things, because that's the part that kept me most invested. And I think there's some promise with the characters as well, a potential for a well-balanced "teamwork" sort of setup. If they can balance thoughtful, interesting storylines/characterization with "edge of your seat" action movie-style chase scenes, I think that'll be enough to keep this show on the schedule." - Angela

"Derek from Criminal Minds is back again, but that Jim Street kid has to go. Decent reboot but nothing spectacular." - Dahne

"Strong start. Nothing special though. It's a typical CBS procedural, but Shemar Moore is definitely ready to lead his own show and he does so brilliantly. There is some room for improvement. The episode suffers from the typical pilot mistakes of trying to cram to much story into a single episode." - Aimee Hicks

"Had some decent action, but was far too generic." - Milo-MJ

-----------------------

SEAL TEAM (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: 5.33; Chosen by Jennise) Premiere: September 27, 2017

SEAL TEAM follows the lives of the elite Navy SEALs as they train, plan and execute the most dangerous, high-stakes missions our country can ask.

This will be David Boreanaz' next project following Bones and Angel before that. Will the draw of a fan favourite actor be enough to distinguish this military drama from the rest of the pack?

What Does the Team Have to Say About the Pilot?

Much better than I expected. High production value, interesting characters, and some intriguing areas to be developed. Hopefully the series gets even better - Jimmy Ryan

I wanted to like this because of David Boreanaz, but he was the only interesting thing about this. I think it could have potential if you flesh out the characters and develop the relationship between Boreanaz and Max Thieriot's characters, but the show needs major work. - Jessica Van Winkle

I found it quite boring and all the military terms were quite confusing for me. There were a couple of scenes that made me cringe. - Babar

This sturdy if unmemorable military drama was tailor-made for CBS, with solid performances by David Boreanaz and Jessica Paré. - Popcultureguy

-----------------------

DECEPTION (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: N/A; Chosen by Kollin) Premiere: TBD

DECEPTION follows a magician, Cameron Black (Jack Cutmore-Scott) who becomes the world's first "consulting illusionist" for the FBI.

Another procedural for ABC as it tries to find a replacement for Castle. This is yet another show produced by Greg Berlanti, famous for the Arrow-verse on CW and Blindspot. The plot involving magic and crime may just make this show wonky enough to stand out among a slew of procedurals airing on the big networks

LIFE SENTENCE (Average SpoilerTV Pilot Rating: N/A; Chosen by Saloni) Premiere: January 2018
