In an episode where emotions were high, 'I See Darkness' as a whole, for the most part, fell flat.
If you are a Wayhaught shipper then this episode, with Haught's life on the life, had plenty of emotional stakes. However, there were just too many frustrating things happening that really detracted from the quality of the episode.
First of all, was there a reason to bring in Shay? The Rosita/Waverly kiss in Episode 9 already complicated things enough, but now they throw a wife in the mix? This show has been slowly turning into a soap opera, spending a chunk of its time focused on the relationships over everything else, which is the worst direction a show like Wynonna Earp can go down. Having a strong, happy Wayhaught relationship without all the unnecessary drama would work just fine for a supernatural drama.
I do have to say though that the fact Nedley hid the ring in his cup because no one would touch Nedley's mug was a humorous line, but it didn't make sense on a character standpoint. There is no way he would be that stupid to leave an item that could potentially lead to doom for the town out in the open. None of it made any sense at all.
Waverly giving the ring to the Black Widow made sense in a way because she loves Haught. However, at the same time, when has her sister not pulled through when it mattered?
Some would complain that this is out of character for Waverly to not trust Wynonna. However, the fact Wynonna kept the secret of the third seal away from her gives her good reason to at least feel frustrated and thus, act out impulsively, by giving the ring away.
On top of that, there were also some unresolved issues with Haught not telling Waverly about her DNA results. There is this sense that the younger Earp sister is fed up with not being in control of her own decisions. Her giving away the ring is the culmination of all this frustration - she is finally taking matters into her own hands - and it was great to see that part of her character being built over the past few episodes.
'I See Darkness' also saw the return of the Fraternal Order who vowed to protect the child once it was born. It would make for the perfect explanation to write off the baby without truly writing him off, while Wynonna and crew continue to fight the monsters in town. I just hope we do not get some sort of wonky storyline that culminates in the baby ageing rapidly followed by some angsty, "mommy wasn't there," soap opera. By the direction this show is going, it is very much a possibility.
Another flaw in the episode was Greta, the Blacksmith's sister, who just happened to be working at the hospital and was conveniently around to help Waverly in her time of need. I was sad to see the Blacksmith killed off so fast last season, as I thought she was a strong character in the limited time she had, so it is great to see they are bringing the actress back. However, it all happened so randomly. If Greta was so pissed off at the Earp's for letting her sister die, why did not she attack them earlier? It all felt too setup for plot convenience.
Nevertheless, the ending of the episode that saw Wynonna disappear to God knows where and Doc stuck back in the well, while everyone else continued to live their life, was a surprise turn of events. It definitely opens up the possibility for Bobo to come to the rescue, and this reviewer very much welcomes the return of the former baddie, who will probably become part of Team Earp in due time.
