The Bold Type - The Breast Issue - Review + POLL

This week on The Bold Type, Sutton accidentally leaves an expensive necklace in a cab and struggles to find it. With the help of Kat and Alex she succeeds. Kat is pissed off that the board members told her she couldn’t post pictures of breasts for breast cancer awareness and tries to fight them but realizes she may be doing more harm than good. Jane is tasked to write about testing for the breast cancer gene, a subject that’s very personal since her mother died from breast cancer. She yells at Jacqueline when the subject is brought up. Jane later meets with Jacqueline at the latter’s home and they talk things out. She finally agrees to take the test with the support of her friends but finds out she has the gene.

Best storyline: I figured I’d get the most difficult paragraph out of the way first. Breast cancer awareness and prevention is such an important subject, I’m worried I won’t do it justice. I think at this point, everyone knows at least one person who has had breast cancer. Like Jane, my mother also had breast cancer (though they caught it super early, so she’s fine) but it also scares the crap out of me. I’m around Jane’s age and I agree with her that testing seems way too early. And yet… sometimes it’s just better to be safe than sorry, right? And then there’s the other side of the coin. Knowing if you have the gene or not. If you don’t have it, it’s great. You’re reassured. But if you do, I guess you’ll wish you could go back to not knowing. Because at least then you could tell yourself that everything is fine. Jane was unfortunate enough to find out that she did, in fact, have the gene. And while it’s great that she’s now aware and can take precautions (like more regular mammograms), it still brings some uncertainty to your life. I hope this show has a long future, and if it does, I wouldn’t be surprised if this subject returns.

Favorite character: I was a little worried there for a second when Jane started yelling at Jacqueline, that she’d crossed a line. But each week I’m amazed at how understanding she is. She knew that something else was bothering her and she pushed, perhaps not in the ideal setting, and while she couldn’t let anyone talk to her like that (in front of everyone) she also didn’t humiliate Jane. Which, let’s face it, a lot of bosses would have done. She calmly, but sternly, told Jane to take a walk. And when she invited Jane to her apartment to talk, she knew that in order to talk about something that’s so personal, she would have to share as well. I loved that we got to see a whole new side of Jacqueline. I’d love to see more of her personal life.

That’s the spirit: Whether or not it was to get her mind off Adena, Kat was on fire this week. Kat is one of those people who cannot hear the words “you can’t…” because it has the opposite effect. If you tell her she can’t do something, she’ll immediately start asking why and thinking of loopholes. While her plan to show the hypocrisy of Instagram was admirable, it didn’t really change the fact that Scarlet’s account almost got shut down. I noticed that this is something she has struggled with in the past. She always wants to fight things head on, while sometimes it may be better (and more effective) to pick your battles.

Aaand there it is: A few weeks back, I predicted a love triangle between Sutton, Richard and Alex. And it does seem like things are headed there. Richard at least seemed jealous. But Alex seems like a stand-up guy, not like he’d pursue someone who is in a relationship. But jealousy is an ugly thing, so there is, of course, a chance Richard will ruin things all on his own. I did get the feeling like he feels a bit left out. They’re so busy trying to hide their relationship that they’re missing out on a lot of important moments couples should be able to do together. Like looking for an expensive necklace you accidentally left in a cap (which I saw coming a mile away, btw).
Favorite relationship: We’re halfway through the season now and I just feel like it needs to be mentioned again how awesome the friendship between Jane, Kat and Sutton is. No matter what is going on, they are always there for each other. They support one another no matter what. Jane needed her friends this week and they were there for her before she even asked. They were supportive of Kat when she was struggling with her feelings for Adena and not once were they weirded out by Kat having feelings for a girl (this may not seem like a big deal, but on TV it is). Sutton took a huge professional risk and her friends were there for her even giving her a plan B in case things didn’t work out. This show has so many healthy relationships between women, it’s honestly so refreshing to see. Please Freeform, renew this gem of a show.

Best quotes: Jane: “A lot of things are legal. Yoga pants on a date are legal, doesn’t mean we should do it.” Sutton: “It was one time.”
Kat: “Why do these middle-aged men get to tell us how to manage our breast health. Do we tell them how to manage their testicle wellness?” Jane: “Not me.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
