The Bold Type - Before Tequila Sunrise - Review + POLL

This week on The Bold Type, Kat hurried over to the airport where Adena was detained. They had a romantic evening. Kat originally planned to go with Adena but changed her mind at the end. Meanwhile, Sutton and Jane were trapped at the office, thanks to Trump. Jane was still struggling to decide what to do about the offer at Insight. She met up with Ryan, who was just fired. In the end, Jane decided to take the job. Sutton helped out Alex with his assignment and after a few too many drinks they ended up in bed together. But Sutton is still not over Richard.

Going or staying: I think this episode was very true to Kat’s personality. She’s always the first one to fight for what she believes in. She really went all out for Adena. We all saw her freak out in the beginning of the episodes, but when she was with Adena, she seemed much more collected. I’m guessing she was holding it in for Adena. She went full-romance, building a pillow fort and everything. I’m not a frequent flyer but is it really that easy to sneak around an airport at night? Choosing to go with Adena was definitely an impulsive decision, one that I’m not sure Kat had thought through. It’s not until actual boarding that her doubts starting to come to the surface. I think Kat realized that, while it would’ve been romantic, going with Adena was not a smart choice. For starters, she didn’t have anything with her but her purse. She didn’t notify work and the fact that she didn’t tell her friends says to me that she knew they’d be able to talk her out of it. I know this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Kat and Adena together. I doubt Adena or Kat would give up that quickly and I expect some sort of cliffhanger involving the two next week.

Morning after: Sutton seemed to really be struggling with what to do about Richard. They’re still in that awkward post-breakup phase where they don’t really know how to act around each other. They broke up because their relationship didn’t work, mainly because of external circumstances. But they still loved each other and that doesn’t just go away when the relationship ends. While I like Sutton and Alex together, I think they should’ve remained friends for the time being. It’s not that I don’t like Alex, I really do, but I think he deserves better than to be Sutton’s rebound. He deserves someone who’s all in and, at this point, I don’t think Sutton is.

Most sensible: Jane seemed like Kat’s opposite this week. While Kat was impulsive, Jane was over-careful. I think deep down she knew what the right choice for her was, but that didn’t make it any easier. Scarlet has always been her dream. But she had to face that fact that at this point in her career, Insight can offer her so much more. Even Jacqueline agreed (she totally read that list). We’ve all seen that the two of them do have a close mentor relationship, which is why I think Jacqueline wants what’s best for her. At some point, I actually thought Jacqueline would fire Jane to make the decision for her. But that wouldn’t be right because Jane has to learn how to make these kinds of decisions on her own. The main difference between Scarlet and Insight is that while Jacqueline wants to give Jane the platform that Insight is offering her, the execs won’t let her. And if Jane wants to make a name for herself, she has to take a leap of faith.

Missed this: I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I really like Jane and Ryan together. I think he brings out a different side of Jane. He helps her get out of her comfort zone. I think Jane chickened out on their relationship once it started getting a bit more serious. She never really gave it a fair chance, she just assumed he wouldn’t be interested in a serious relationship. I really liked their interactions this week, especially when slightly drunk. I really hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Ryan. Perhaps there’s a job opening for him at Scarlet or even Insight?
Why this is important: Since the final episode is next week and we still don’t know if there will be a second season, I feel like I need to state why it deserves one. When I decided to review this show, it was based on a promo that I’d seen, which looked like a fun guilty pleasure show. But this show is so much more than that. The female characters (Jane, Kat, and Sutton) and their relationship are really the key to this show. It’s one of the best friendships I’ve seen on TV in a long time. The way these women are portrayed is so refreshing. We have a female boss who is supportive of her employees, challenges them and supports them when they need it. We have three friends who have each other’s back no matter what, even if they don’t agree on something. When Kat fell for a woman, her relationship with Jane and Sutton stayed the exact same (which doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it is). This show has brought up important topics regarding sexuality, taking risks, breast cancer, … I look forward to seeing what else this show has to offer, so please Freeform, renew this show!

Best quotes: Jacqueline: “Nevertheless, we will persist. I refuse to cancel a pitch meeting on account of that man.”
Jane: “You are insane.” Sutton: “But really, really romantic. I love you, good luck.” Jane: “Love you.” Kat: “Love you too!”
Sutton: “Alex said he saw a small, orange blur.”
Jane: “We’re just going to do a super casual walk by. Peek in and just see if it’s there.” Ryan: “Let’s do it.” Jane: “But be casual.” Ryan: “Oh yeah, totally. We’re super casual. We’re just two people out for a walk, in an office, drunk, wearing gender neutral clothing. She’ll never see it coming.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
