Shadowhunters - Hail and Farewell - Review + POLL

Aug 8, 2017

This week on Shadowhunters, everyone is looking for Valentine and Jonathan. Magnus makes an alliance with the Seelie Queen, who in turn meets with Valentine to make a deal. Jace, Clary, Izzy and Alec confront Jonathan and seem to kill him. Maia gets kidnapped and wakes up in the Seelie Court. Clary and Jace get back together.

Underwhelming: There’s still one more episode left this season so I could be completely off base here, but I really hope Jonathan isn’t the death that was teased. Not only would that be kind of lame and way too soon, I’m 90% sure he’s not actually dead. If he was, the consequences would be gigantic. Books 4 to 6 would go right out the window. Which is why I’m sure he’s not actually dead. Aside from that, there’s also so much that hasn’t been developed yet, like what his relationship with Clary is like now. I’m not saying Valentine hasn’t been a good villain, but he’s starting to get on my nerves. Jonathan, on the other hand, is still a bit of a mystery so there are plenty of turns a storyline involving him can take.
Least favorite character: Okay, what is up with Magnus? This can’t just be about Alec lying to him. He’s been around long enough to know that the Seelie Queen cannot be trusted and yet he’s so willing to align with her. Even Luke is hesitant and he’s only been alpha for a short while. I hope he and Alec manage to hash things out in the finale but at this point, it doesn’t seem all that likely.

Shady: I’ve known from day one that the Seelie Queen could not be trusted. The fact that she can’t lie actually makes her even more dangerous because she knows exactly how to get around it. At this point, I’m sure she’s playing both sides until it becomes clear who will win. The queen also seems to have a weird fixation on Simon. Not sure if it has to do with his daylighter abilities or something else. I’m sure that Maia’s kidnapping has something to do with it, that girl is in big trouble. I’m assuming the queen will ransom her in exchange for something. I’m very curious to find out what that something is.

A bit too much: I know that they probably wanted Clary and Jace’s reunion to seem epic but it did feel a bit overdone. Cinematically, the scene with the runes was quite beautiful. But something inside me went “Oh, jeez.”. I’m glad they finally crossed this bridge, though. We all knew it was inevitable and avoiding each other while ignoring their feelings wasn’t going to work either.

Favorite appearance: We finally got to see Catarina Loss. At this point, I no longer expected we’d see her with blue skin. They didn’t do it with Ragnor and it does seem like the warlocks in the series are better and hiding their marks. Other than that, she’s pretty much exactly as I’d pictured her. I always liked her in the books and hope we get to see more of her soon.
Expectations: There are a few things I’m expecting to see in the finale. I think we’ll finally get to see more of Idris. Wouldn’t be surprised if we stuck around for a while next season. At this point, I feel like there’s too much of book 3 left for it all to be dealt with next week. Which is why I think there will be some major cliffhanger and things will pick up right where they left off in the next season. I expect Jonathan will make a comeback and someone of the main cast to die. I’m hoping a certain Simon storyline will kick off as well.

Best quotes: Maia: “Who knew dating a college boy would come in handy. What? Was it the word dating?” Simon: “No, no. It was the word college. I mean, I haven’t been to school in forever. Classes started like a week ago and my mom already paid the meal plans. And I don’t even eat anymore, so she’s out like 3 grant and… Wait, are we dating?”
Simon: Simon: “Well, considering you’re trying to get vampires, werewolves, and warlocks to play nice… You might want to get used to some rejection.

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
