This week on Shadowhunters, Max fights for his life after being attacked by Jonathan. It looks like he won’t make it for a while but he ends up pulling through. Jonathan almost manages to steal what he thinks is the Mortal Mirror but is exposed by Clary. She later puts the pieces together (rather quickly if you ask me) and realizes that the Mortal Mirror is actually Lake Lynn. Simon and Maia help a newly turned werewolf and she tells Simon how she was turned. Luke fight for control of his pack and wins but his partner Ollie seems to have figured out what he is. Magnus meets with the Seelie Queen who is a little eager to declare war on the Shadowhunters. Magus feels like he won’t be able to make the right decisions for his people as long as he’s with Alec.
Oh, thank the angel: I figured I’d start with the obvious. I have never been so happy to have been wrong. Max survived Jonathan’s attack, barely. I think most of us didn’t actually expect this but I’m glad the writers made this change. I guess this does mean that certain things will be different in the future. How will this impact Maryse and Robert’s relationship? Max’ death in the books also had a huge impact on Izzy, though since she’s already been down a dark path this season, this might not have such a huge impact. But now that we know Max isn’t the one that dies, that means someone else will. More on that later.
Foreshadowing: I was really impressed with how Maia handled being around a newly turned wolf. She hasn’t been a werewolf for that long and I imagine this brought back a lot of bad memories for her. But she never really seemed to struggle and was focused on helping someone else. Now that she’s told Simon about Jordan, I expect we’ll see him early next season. I don’t think I’ve seen a casting announcement for him yet so I doubt he’ll pop up in the next two episodes. Perhaps that’s for the best because I assume there will be enough going on already.
Most heartbreaking: I honestly didn’t expect Magnus and Alec to still be separated by the end of the episode. But I understand that things are complicated right now and that they both need to figure out where they stand first. The flashbacks absolutely broke my heart. They were a beautiful illustration of their relationship. I hope they figure out how to make things work by the end of the season. The problem isn’t that they don’t love each other, but that they’re from two different worlds and those worlds happen to be on opposite sides for now.
Who will die? So someone is still supposed to die before the end of the season. And I assume it will be someone close to Clary since we saw her cry in the Comic-Con promo (unless they did that on purpose to trick us). While the writers love making changes, I doubt they’ll completely break free from the books’ storylines. So whoever dies would have to have had a minimal effect on the future books, but is still significant enough that it would get a mention in the promo. So my money is on Luke. Since Jocelyn is already gone, most of his storylines from the book are uncertain as well. And he’s still loved enough that it would greatly impact the main characters, especially Clary and Simon. I do think Maryse or Robert is still a possibility but not as likely.
Best quotes: Alec: “What are you afraid of?” Magnus: “Acid washed jeans.”
Magnus: “You once asked me what I was afraid of. It’s this.”
