Star Wars and Marvel Films to Move from Netflix to New Disney Streaming Service
Thanks to TVBuff65 for the heads up.

Films from Marvel and Star Wars that now go to Netflix will move to Disney’s planned ad-free direct-to-consumer streaming service, CEO Bob Iger said today at an investor gathering.

“We’re going to launch big, and we’re going to launch hot” by late 2019, he told the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2017 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference. He expects to include four or five original series, and three or four Disney-branded movies per year on the new service.

Netflix in "Active Discussions" to Keep Marvel and Lucasfilm Movies
Thanks to TVBuff65 for the heads up.

“There’s been talk about launching a proprietary Marvel service and Star Wars service,” Iger says. “But we’re mindful of the volume of product that would go into those services. And we want to be careful about that. We’ve also thought about including Marvel and Star Wars as part of the Disney-branded service. But there we want to be mindful of the Star Wars fan, the Marvel fan, and to what extent those fans either overlap with Disney fans or are completely separate and incremental to Disney. So it’s all in discussion.”

But now, in speaking with Reuters, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandons reveals that the streaming service is “still in active discussions” with Disney about the possibility of securing a deal to retain the rights to stream Marvel and Lucasfilm releases on Netflix after 2019. Now that doesn’t mean these discussions will lead to a deal, and I don’t really think the chances are strong, but it’s clear Netflix wants to maintain the streaming rights to Marvel and Lucasfilm new releases.

Disney Removing Movies from Netflix

It’s barely been a year since Netflix became the exclusive site for streaming Disney movies. Now, in a stunning reversal, the House of Mouse has announced it plans to pull its films from the service and start up one of its own in 2019.

Announced during its earnings report today, Disney confirmed plans to remove all of its movies from the service and end its streaming agreement with Netflix in 2019, meaning that movies like Toy Story 4 or Frozen 2, both due out that year, will not come to Netflix . Exclusive rights were only granted to Netflix by Disney starting last September, making it the only place to stream new Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and—as of June, with the arrival of Rogue One on the platform—Star Wars movies.
