23:25 - How I Met Your Dad - New Writers to Take a Go at How I Met Your Mother Spinoff

Last season, 20th Century Fox TV took a second stab at developing a spinoff from its long-running CBS comedy series How I Met Your Mother. The project, titled How I Met Your Dad, was spec-ed by the studio with his Is Us co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. But as This Is Us took off, the duo were busy working on it and were subsequently elevated to co-showrunners with creator Dan Fogelman for Season 2.

With Aptaker and Berger no longer available, “the studio will try (developing a spinoff) with different writers,” Fox chairman Dana Walden told Deadline. No previous HIMYM spinoff ideas will be carried over. “They will be starting from scratch,” she said of the new effort, potentially for next season, which is currently looking for writers. “It’s one that’s been slowly cooked. If it’s the right idea the right execution, we’ll take that,” Walden said about doing a HIMYM spinoff, which the studio first attempted at CBS during the original series’ final season.

23:20 - Bull - Season 2 - Minka Kelly to Guest

In the second season of the CBS drama Bull, Minka Kelly plays Kara Clayton, the much younger wife of media baron Marcus Clayton (Ronald Guttman), who kills her husband after he stabs her multiple times. Kara is set to inherit her husband’s $6 billion estate, except Clayton’s family wants her tried for murder, so they enlist Bull (Michael Weatherly) to make that happen.

Kara will be presented by Diana Lindsay, Bull’s occasional love interest played by Jill Flint. She recently appeared on the drama during its freshman season in April.

22:25 - The Passage - FOX Vampire Drama Pilot to Likely Undergo Reshoots, In Contention For Fall 2018

EXCLUSIVE: The Passage, Fox’s high-profile vampire drama pilot from Liz Heldens, Matt Reeves, Scott Free and 20th Century Fox TV, is eyeing possible reshoots, though the network brass continues to be high on the adaptation of Justin Cronin’s fantasy book trilogy.

The pilot, directed by Marcos Siega and starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar, was shot off-cycle and has been delivered to the network for midseason consideration.

“There is a lot that we loved about it. There were some things we felt we needed to explore the possibility of reshooting,” Fox Entertainment president David Madden told Deadline at TCA. “We are no longer looking at it as a midseason contender, we are looking at it as a fall 2018 contender but the parts that worked were fantastic, and we see it as a really strong prospect.”

Underscoring Fox’s faith in The Passage, the network and the studio are funding a writers room with an eye towards potential re-shoots.

19:40 - King of the Hill - Animated Comedy May Be Revived at FOX

Fox's middle-class animated comedy King of the Hill may be revived at Fox.

Speaking with reporters following her time in front of the Television Critics Association on Tuesday, Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden said the network has had "preliminary conversations" with King of the Hill creators Greg Daniels and Mike Judge about bringing the Hill family back.

"I would like to explore that. We had a very preliminary conversation given what's going on in the country, they had a point of view about how those characters would respond. But again, it was one meeting and I hope to revisit it," Walden said. "The meeting was probably two and a half months ago. They're both very busy and it was really just a first exploratory, 'Are you excited about this? Is there potential in that future?' And they were both excited about it but they're working on a lot of different things individually, so it's about finding time."

16:45 - Scandal - Season 7 - Darby Stanchfield to Direct

Scandal star Darby Stanchfield is not letting Scandal end without stepping behind the camera.

The actress is set to direct her first episode of the ABC political thriller. An episode date has not yet been determined, though it will be later in the season.

"I'm incredibly honored and grateful that Shonda Rhimes has invited me to direct an episode of Scandal," the actress behind Abby told THR. "This is a rare opportunity in the industry, but at Shondaland, it's yet another proof point that sets them apart as innovators. Last year, I shadowed our [now former] producing director Tom Verica, sat in on editing sessions, asked questions and absorbed as much as I could from our amazing crew. Shortly after, Shonda allowed me to direct a Scandal digital series for the ABC website, and after that wonderful experience, I feel prepared and excited to take on this next step."

17:20 - American Vandal - Trailer

From co-creators Tony Yacenda (Pillow Talking) and Dan Perrault (Honest Trailers), and showrunner Dan Lagana (Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous), American Vandal is a half-hour true-crime satire that explores the aftermath of a costly high school prank that left twenty-seven faculty cars vandalized with phallic images. Over the course of the eight-episode season, an aspiring sophomore documentarian investigates the controversial and potentially unjust expulsion of troubled senior (and known dick-drawer) Dylan Maxwell. Not unlike its now iconic true-crime predecessors, the addictive American Vandal will leave one question on everyone's minds until the very end: Who drew the dicks?

19:00 - Sweetbitter - Half-Hour Drama Based on Novel in Development at Starz Eyeing Potential Series Order

STARZ DEVELOPING BEST-SELLING NOVEL "SWEETBITTER" INTO SERIES

Beverly Hills, Calif. - July 31, 2017 - Starz announced today it is developing the half-hour drama series "Sweetbitter," based on the national best-selling book of the same name written by Stephanie Danler, who has also written the script for the first episode. Plan B Entertainment tapped Stu Zicherman ("The Americans," "The Affair," "Six Degrees") to develop the script with Danler, and both will serve as executive producers along with Plan B.

"Sweetbitter" follows 22-year-old Tess who, shortly after arriving in New York City, lands a job at a celebrated downtown restaurant. Swiftly introduced to the world of drugs, alcohol, love, lust, dive bars, and fine dining, she learns to navigate the chaotically alluring, yet punishing life she has stumbled upon. This is the story of a young woman's coming-of-age, set against the rich and grimy backdrop of exclusive restaurants, conjuring a nonstop and high-adrenaline world evoking the possibility, beauty, and fragility of being young and adrift.

A writer based in Los Angeles, Danler's debut novel "Sweetbitter" was selected as an NPR Best Book of 2016 and ranked on the New York Times' Hardcover Fiction Best-Seller List, reaching #10; the Los Angeles Times' Best Seller List at #2 and the Paperback Fiction List at #6; Amazon Top 100 at #28 and USA Today's Best-Selling Books List. It also reached #10 on the Publishers Weekly Hardcover Fiction list and #13 on the IndieBound Hardcover Fiction list.

Senior Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna and Vice President of Original Programming Patrick McDonald are the Starz executives in charge of "Sweetbitter." Starz retains all global distribution and home entertainment rights to the series.
Source:

Starz has put half-hour drama Sweetbitter, based on Stephanie Danler’s best-selling 2016 book of the same name, on fast-track development.

The project, which hails from Danler, Stu Zicherman (The Americans) and Plan B Entertainment, is based on a pilot script developed by Danler and Zicherman and written by Danler. I hear Starz is ordering additional scripts and assembling a small writers room with an eye toward a potential straight-to-series order. This is a model the network has been using for its scripted series development, bypassing filming a pilot and instead setting up mini writers rooms on projects Starz brass are high on and evaluating multiple finished scripts before making a series greenlight decision.

19:00 - One Piece - Live Action TV Adaptation of Japanese Manga in Development

Marty Adelstein and his Tomorrow Studios has partnered with Shueisha on the series adaptation of Japanese comic series One Piece, the best-selling manga series in history.

The live action adaptation will be executive produced by One Piece publisher Shueisha and author Eiichiro Oda, alongside Adelstein (Good Behavior, Prison Break) and Becky Clements (Good Behavior, Snowpiercer) through Tomorrow Studios.

One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore a fantastical world of endless oceans and exotic islands in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King.

“I’ve been a fan of One Piece for 20 years. I am so honored that Shueisha and Oda-san have entrusted me with such a cherished iconic property,” said Adelstein. “I will do everything in my power to make the One Piece TV series an absolute success. While I expect this to be one of the most expensive shows ever done in television, the worldwide interest is tremendous and will be well worth the financial commitment.”
