This week on The Bold Type, Sutton tries to pull off two jobs as she tries to impress someone in the fashion department in hopes of landing a job there. Her boss Lauren isn’t very supportive at first, when Sutton seems to be neglecting her tasks as Lauren’s assistant, but gets on board once Sutton proves she can handle it. Kat has to deal with people harassing her online. It gets so bad that she almost ruins her presentation. But with the support of Jacqueline and a few others she finds a solution. Jane tries to write a story about a female politician which ends up taking a whole new direction when the woman doesn’t take her seriously. Her date with Ryan doesn’t go as planned when she gets a glimpse at his new article but they work things out in the end.
Biggest potential: While I really liked how Kat’s situation was handled, I still think there was potential for more. Kat really struggled to figure out what to do. It’s hard not to respond when people are spreading lies about you. But Jacqueline was right, engaging only makes it worse. In the end, Kat’s solution was good but not everyone who gets harassed on the internet has the option to make an informational video. I would’ve liked to have seen a solution that normal people can use as well. I felt really bad for Kat, though. As the person in charge of social media, she’s obviously the one most likely to get harassed. I can’t imagine that this was the first time, but I do think it’s never gotten this bad for her. Kat has always come across as the strongest of the three girls but I liked that we got to see her more vulnerable side.
Biggest surprise: I don’t know why Jacqueline keeps surprising me, honestly it really says something about how women of power are portrayed in the media. In the two previous episodes, we’ve mostly seen her interact with Jane. I’m so glad the writers didn’t make their relationship a ‘special case’. Jacqueline was equally supportive with Kat this week. She vouched for Kat to the board members that were in that meeting so if Kat screws up, that also reflects badly on her. But there was no yelling, instead, she realized something must be up because she knows Kat can do better. She even went out of her way to reschedule the presentation. I’m probably going to keep gushing about Jacqueline each week until the bubble bursts, so get used to it.
Train wreck waiting to happen: I knew juggling two jobs would be too much for Sutton be she handled it better than I expected. She really went for what she wanted this week. I can imagine that a job in that area is extremely popular and that it will be difficult to get, but she didn’t let that affect her. She used every advantage she had and hopefully it’ll pay off. But I think she still has quite a way to go.
Most impressive: Jane really impressed me this week. In the past two episodes she was a bit unsure about her story but this week she really took charge. And even when things didn’t go her way, she didn’t give up. She found a new angle to write from and I think this might not be the last we hear about that story. When you call a politician out on something like this, it doesn’t go unnoticed. In just a few episodes Jane’s confidence has immensely improved which helps her as a writer.
Most confusing: Like Jane, I too have trouble figuring Ryan out. The problem is that we’ve only really seen him in his interactions with Jane. His article this week showed that he’s not a complete jerk and Alex did allude to the same in regards to his previous article. However, we haven’t really gotten the chance to judge for ourselves, since we’ve only really seen him with Jane. The same actually goes for Richard and Alex. We only see them in interactions with our three leads. While I love that these three women are the main focus, there are some other characters that I would like to get to know better (Jacqueline, for instance). So I hope we get to see more of these characters.
Best quotes: Kat: “You need to get laid. … Sorry, but she does.” Random lady in the elevator: “As long as she doesn’t do it in here.” Jane: “I won’t.”
Jane: “It’s not that kind of date.” Sutton: “Then don’t take it off.”
That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
Please be respectful in the comments, any unnecessary rudeness isn't welcome.
