The Originals - Voodoo Child - Review

Jun 17, 2017

This week the Original family discovered that the Hollow has possessed Hope is and planning to make it permanent. Vincent tried to imprison her within the book but failed and she destroyed it. Freya and Keelin take their relationship to the next level, while Elijah and Hayley’s relationship has been reduced to awkward moments and uncertainty. Marcel finally wakes Sofya.

Most impressive: I’m so glad that we get another episode of seeing Summer as the Hollow because I was very impressed with her this week. She did a great job, both as the Hollow and as Hope in that scene with Klaus. It’s a shame they’re going to recast her next season. She’s done a tremendous job this season and I look forward to seeing her in other shows (perhaps a certain spin-off?).
Trouble in paradise: I’ve tried to stay away from the Haylijah subject for most of this season. I’m always a bit iffy when it comes to talking about specific ships. I have trouble hiding my bias. However, at this point not talking about just doesn’t make sense. These two have had issues before (Klaus as a baby daddy, Jackson, lethal werewolf bite,…) but this time there’s no external force keeping them apart. Hayley has always known the Original siblings have done some bad things but knowing it and seeing it are two entirely different things. I think she may have been a bit naïve going into Elijah’s mind thinking she’d have no problem bringing him back. She never expected him to turn that darkness onto her. And maybe if Hope hadn’t been in the picture she would’ve already forgiven him but her main priority is her daughter’s safety. I think we’ll get a confrontation next week where she’ll feel like she has to choose between her daughter and him. If it truly comes down to that choice, I know which one she’ll pick.

Oh honey, no: Speaking of dying. If the writers are truly planning on pairing up Marcel and Rebekah again (which I hope they’re not), then Sofya is not going to make it to season 5. Sometimes I feel that Marcel is like a drug to Rebekah, one she keeps going back to even though she knows it won’t end well. Someone mentioned last week that the writers wanted to dial down the toxic relationship, well can they please start with them.

Predictions: It’s only fitting that I make some predictions for the season finale. I’ve been trying to figure out who will die for weeks now and I’m still no closer than I was when I first started. Though, judging by the promo for next week (which was surprisingly spoilery for a change) I’m starting to fear for the non-immortal characters. My guess is that the season will end with the Original siblings being forced to separate so Klaus, Hayley and Hope will likely head to Mystic Falls while the other 2 (not sure if Freya will count here) will head elsewhere. Next season will probably start with a time jump (to which we’ll hopefully get a glimpse). But if the time jump is significant (like say 10 years to make Hope a teenager) that raises the question of how they writers will handle the mortal characters aging ten years. My guess is they’ll limit the amount of mortal characters that survive (in other words either Vincent, Freya or Keelin will die) and pull out some make-up tricks for the remaining few. So my money is on (drumroll please) Vincent. He’s been on my list since the start of the season and if he dies bringing down the Hollow things would come full circle.
Best quotes: Rebekah: “My brother is back, much to the joy of custom suit tailors everywhere not to mention me.”
Hayley: “I want my daughter back.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
