The Bold Type - Pilot - Review

Jun 22, 2017

This week was the first episode of The Bold Type. It introduced us to Jane, Kat, and Sutton who work at a magazine called Scarlet. Jane was just promoted to writer and struggles to write an article about her ex. Sutton is an assistant who is sleeping with a board member. She tells him that she wants them to have more than sex. Kat is in charge of social media at Scarlet and tries to get an article in the magazine about Adena. When Adena is arrested, she does whatever it takes to help her.

Favorite aspect: My biggest concern when I first heard about this show was that it would have the female characters either competing with each other for work related stuff or over a guy. But honestly, I was so surprised by the pilot. I really liked all of the relationships between these amazing women. Both Kat and Jane have gotten their dream job while Sutton is still working as an assistant but she never lets that get in the way of her excitement for her friends. I hope the future episodes keep the focus on the relationship between these three rather than romantic relationships because I really think the show will shine the most if it keeps the focus on friendships.
Most surprising: The writers could have so easily made Jacqueline be a bitch to Jane. So often, when the boss of a certain company is a woman, they make her out to be mean and high demanding to the main character. But this was so much better! I loved Jacqueline’s interactions with Jane. She really pushed her to get out of her comfort zone and she wanted her to succeed. This shouldn’t have been as shocking to me as it was. There should be more relationships between women like this on TV. I think Jacqueline sees a lot of herself in Jane and hope she continues to push her to be her best.

Second most surprising: Even though a lot of the characters frequently use social media, no one ever looks down on them for it. I actually really like the way it’s handled in the show like when they were trying to figure out how to stalk someone who without it. Even I had to think about how I would go about it (and I don’t even use social media that much). I’m sure social media will continue to be featured regularly on the show I think it’s actually really refreshing to see it used this way.

Favorite character: If I had to pick a favorite (this might change each week, though), I’d have to go with Kat. She has so much fire in her and determination that it’s actually kind of inspiring. She went after what she wanted with so much confidence. And when Adena got arrested she immediately wanted to fight. It would’ve killed me as well to have to take a step back and let some else handle it (especially when you feel responsible) but she handled it so well. And I loved that she tweeted a picture of cats to not lose face in front of everyone (super smart). When she was discussing sexuality with Adena something really struck me. I don’t think Kat has ever been in love with someone. She said she was straight but that wasn’t really the vibe that I was getting. So far I’ve never really seen any show discuss the difference between romantic and sexual attraction and it would be so great if this show could be one of the first. I know I’m probably just getting my hopes up.
You go, girl: I was so proud of Sutton for not only telling off her friends for making assumptions but also for going after what she wants. I honestly expected Sutton and Richard to be hiding their fling for a few more episodes but I liked that she very quickly decided that if he couldn’t give her what she wanted, he wasn’t worth the trouble. She deserves to be treated as more than a booty call.

Best quotes: Lauren: “Any problems with the words ‘vajayjay’?” Kat: “Uh, yeah. It’s not 2006.”
Sutton: “I want to be as confident as her. How did she get to be so confident?” Jane: “She was overpraised as a child.”
Jacqueline: “A few years ago, I read an application of a young intern and her words have always stayed with me. When asked why she wanted to work at Scarlet, she said ‘because when I needed it, Scarlet was like getting the advice of an older sister that I’d always wished I’d had.’ No matter how many years pass, no matter how the world changes, Scarlet will always be that older sister and we will always be there for the girls who need her.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again July 11th for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
