This week on Shadowhunters, the Institute is dealing with a serial killer who keeps leaving DNA of Downworlders leading the Clave to nearly start a war with them. Maia and Simon are arrested but eventually let go. The vampires want Simon to lead them. Max arrives at the Institute and nearly gets himself killed. Magnus and Dot get drunk and almost do something they’d regret. Maia and Jace did do something they’ll regret in the morning.
Most annoying character: When it comes to Jace, it really depends on the week whether or not I like him. This was not a good week for him. I understand that Jace wants to belong somewhere. He always felt like an outcast with the Lightwoods. Sure they made him feel welcome but he wasn’t really one of them. He’s had three last names in the past few months and is just trying to figure out where he comes from. I get that, I really do. However, that doesn’t mean common sense should go out the window. Downworlders are not dogs, you can’t just put a tracker in them. That tracker had been in Maia’s neck for what, a few hours, maybe less? And they already arrested her because she just happened to be nearby. Maybe I’ve been watching too many episodes of The Good Wife but that seems circumstantial at best. It really bothered me how quickly Jace went along with this.
This sounds familiar: Did the tracker aspect of this storyline remind anyone else of something? What would the Consul’s next step have been? Rounding them up and putting them in camps? I couldn’t help but notice the political hints this storyline kept dropping. Clary couldn’t have said it any better. Tracking people based on the kind of blood they have is an action caused by fear. Just like condemning an entire religion for the actions of a few is. I just probably stop here because I could keep going all day.
Favorite pairing, sort of: When Jace wasn’t acting like a jerk, I did kind of like his interactions with Maia. I even thought to myself that I could see myself shipping this if they slowly built up a relationship. But of course, slow is the exact opposite of what happened. While I’m glad they skipped the Maia and Simon debacle from the books, throwing her at Jace was not really an improvement. And it makes me wonder if we’re going to see Jordan anytime soon.
Mister popular: Simon has sure been getting a lot of attention lately. While I didn’t expect the other vampires to see him as some kind of leader, I fear that they might easily turn on him when he refuses to share how it happened. Especially since a certain storyline is still supposed to happen.
Change of plans: While I always enjoy seeing Max (man, that kid takes after Jace), I didn’t expect to see him again until the storyline moves to Idris. I’m sure this doesn’t mean that we won’t be heading there after all but it might not be until next season. I have no idea what the writer’s plans are for the Idris set, green screens and CGI or more location stuff (probably the former), but I was really excited to see it. I still have hopes for it to make an appearance in the last few episodes of the season.
Favorite family: Speaking of Lightwoods, I really like how supportive they were of each other this week. Sure, Izzy had her hands full with Max, who is probably grounded for life. But Alec was really looking out for her, making sure she was ready to handle being in the field. Even when Jace was made head of the Institute, despite feeling some jealousy, he supported his brother. Even if it put him in hot water with Magnus. And Jace supported Alec by stepping aside and letting him take over, showing that he truly trusts his parabatai (because grandma Herondale won’t be happy about this). I hope we get to see more family moments like this.
Best quotes: Maia: “It would be cute if it wasn’t so … constant.”
Maia: “You know, I’ve been stopped by cops for no other reason than being black but I thought the Shadowhunters were more evolved than that.”
That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
Please be respectful in the comments, any unnecessary rudeness isn't welcome.
