This week on Shadowhunters, Alec has a meeting with representatives of the Downworlder community. Someone, who is later revealed to be Sebastian, tricks Luke into an assassination attempt on Valentine. Luke’s partner is getting closer to the truth about him. Clary, Jace, and Simon go to the Seelie Court to talk to the Seelie Queen. She traps them and tells them they can only leave in exchange for the kiss Clary most desires, which is Jace. Izzy tells her mother the truth about the Yin Fen and they seem to grow closer while Sebastian makes Raphael back off. In the final moment of the episode, we see someone (presumably the real Sebastian) being held captive in Sebastian’s apartment.
Ouch: I’m not sure how but the writers managed to make the kiss scene in the Seelie Court even more painful than it was in the books. It might have something to do with the fact that Simon and Clary’s relationship seemed much more serious in the show. The implications of the kiss were also a bit different since Jace and Clary are already aware that they’re not brother and sisters. So when Simon witnesses the kiss, the one that, according to the Seelie Queen, is the kiss that she desired, I think he figured it was the end for them. I’m inclined to agree. I wouldn’t be surprised if they officially broke up in the next episode.
Get on with it: So we got a glimpse at what Sebastian is planning but I really wish they’d speed this up a bit. I get extremely uncomfortable when I see him around the other characters and they are just oblivious to his plans. Of course, he was the one behind the phone call to Luke (who should’ve known better), there really was no other suspect. He was probably hoping to take Luke out this way. I really don’t like how he seems to be fixating on Izzy. I worry that he’s planning something with her.
Conflicted: Perhaps my expectations for the Seelie Court were too high but I thought it was a bit underwhelming. I know that they were on a Freeform budget but still. I guess nothing is ever as you picture it. I did like the Seelie Queen. I love how she managed to evade having to tell the truth every time someone asked a question. I do wish we’d gotten to see more of her cruel side. She didn’t really come across as the powerful faerie that she is. I hope we get to see her again soon.
Changes? I always try to remain vague about what’s coming next because I know not everyone has read the books. But I think I’m not spoiling anyone if I say that there’s a death coming. We all know that the writers haven’t always followed the books when it comes to deaths (like with Jocelyn) and I started wondering this week if they’ll change that specific death. The way that Maryse was making thing right with everyone had me worried for a second. It wouldn’t be the first time that a character dies right when she’s made amends in her life. And Maryse isn’t all that relevant to the future storylines so it could happen. I hope not, though, she’s finally growing on me. I really loved her moments with Izzy. She took the Yin Fen news a lot better than I expected, though she was probably happy that Izzy kicked it before it became lethal (I seriously want a better explanation as to how she didn’t suffer the same way Jem did). I hope Maryse sticks around for a while. These kids need a parental figure in their life.
Rumors: So I’m sure you’ve all heard the rumors that Sarah Hyland from Modern Family will be on the show soon. Everyone assumed she’d play the Seelie Queen, since there was so much secrecy around the role. But now that we know she’s not, that leaves me wondering who she’ll play and why they won’t announce it. If the story does move to Idris there will be plenty of options like Aline Penhallow (who is supposed to be in an episode soon), Helen Blackthorn or even Tessa Gray (though that’s probably just wishful thinking).
Best quotes: Jace: “Simon, this isn’t middle school. This is life or death.” Simon: “Have you been to middle school?”
Ollie: “Use protection. And I don’t mean your gun.”
That’s it for this week. Check in again in two weeks for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
Please be respectful in the comments, any unnecessary rudeness isn't welcome.
