Scene Of The Week - June 4, 2017 + POLL

Jun 4, 2017

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

AMERICAN GODS, "Lemon Scented You", May 28, 2017, Actor: Gillian Anderson
The Scene: David Bowie in the limo
Milo:
Gillian Anderson's scene where she portrays David Bowie in the limo. This was done really well and captures Bowie's look and feel really well, showing just how odd this show can be as well as showing how brilliant Anderson was as an actress here.

DOCTOR WHO, "The Lie of the Land", June 3, 2017, Actors: Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Michelle Gomez, The Scene: The Doctor and Bill visit Missy
Justyna:
Such a brilliant conclusion to a great three-part story. There were quite a few wonderful scenes with the Doctor and Bill I would love to highlight in the article but when it comes to choosing just one moment I wanted to include the part when the two visit Missy in the vault. There's something different about her, but it certainly remains to be seen how much of it is real and how much is just her skills in the art of deception. Regardless, seeing her and the Doctor figuring out the way "the Monks" work and how they can be stopped is a scene to remember. Bill's reactions were spot-on and the moment she understands what stopping these invaders will mean to her was powerful and gave us a better look into this fantastic character. She's grown so much already and though she's still relatively new to the show, she has become quite an important part of it. All three actors, Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie and Michelle Gomez, brought their A-game this week with some of their best performances yet. I was thrilled to see their interactions and can't wait to see what's next. Kudos!

FARGO, "The Law of Inevitability", May 31, 2017, Actors: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Russell Harvard and more, The Scene: Prison bus crash at the end
Darth Locke:
Not sure what's more terrifying: the pain and suffering Nikki keeps on experiencing or Hawley giving us a connection back to season one by catching up to Mr. Wrench, only seemingly to take him away from us again, all while juxtaposing Mr. Wrench and Mr. Numbers, with Varga's two goons trying to weld through the cage that separates the prisoners from the police and driver in the front. Between the Super 8-like filming style of the crash with such layered writing without characters saying as much as a word, and with a rather viewer-taunting upcoming "gut-wrenching" scene, made this all emotional and genius IMO. GOTHAM, "Pretty Hate Machine", May 29, 2017, Actors: Ben McKenzie, Jada Pinkett Smith and more, The Scenes: Jim takes the virus & Fish's comeback
Nirat:
This unexpected twist was sheer genius, few shows are willing to take the complicated path, it’s always the easy way out, the quick save but Gotham goes there and I'm, as always, really impressed. Lee locking Jim up, making him choose between saving himself or dying made for some great scenes with Ben McKenzie. It's so evident Morena Baccarin was having an absolute blast in this darker persona, just like Erin Richards, of whom is amazing as Barbara Kean. Few shows are capable of crafting such great villains, Gotham is one of those. Jim injecting himself to escape and help save Gotham was a truly heroic move. He wouldn't just let himself die in there when he knew he could at least try to help the citizens of Gotham. That in of itself is truly selfless, risking one's self for the safety of others. This season is by far the best DC has to offer, in my opinion, it wasn't uneven like many other series. Gotham has constantly provided unexpected twists, the best villains a DC comic show has to offer, fantastic acting and stunning cinematography, they make use of NYC's locations beautifully. I'm very excited to see what the finale has to offer, I'm certain it'll be excellent, Ra's al Ghul tease in the upcoming promo and featurette is already proving how damn good casting on this show is in comparison with another.
Marko: Fish's comeback.

iZOMBIE, "Twenty Sided, Die", May 30, 2017, Actors: Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli and more, The Scenes: Liv and the gang play a game of Dungeons and Dragons & Don E is revealed to have been captured & Clive meets Bozzio again
Justyna:
It was another wonderful episode of iZombie and of course there's a lot of great scenes to be highlighted but the one I wanted to include in the article the most is the gang playing D&D. It was just such a genuinely funny and heartwarming moment, a lighter stop amid the darkness in their regular life. Things are getting even harder for the guys, especially with the threat of the zombie hunters making their presence known in the world. Which is probably why this scene was even more appreciated and a true joy to watch for me. There's a great balance of comedy, action and heart in this story, thanks to the amazing actors, writers & crew. I found this episode and the moment to be a perfect example of that. Liv's new personality turns her into a dedicated player and she decides to run a game of D&D for her friends. Only Ravi appears to be interested at first but I love how engaged Major and especially Clive get during the game. "Where is the lich?!!!" had me laughing for a while. In case I didn't mention that before, I absolutely love what the writers and the actor did with Clive's character. I'm incredibly glad he's on the team Zombie this season as it's the thing that I was missing the most in the previous ones. Such a brilliant scene! Made me want to join the game too. Kudos!
Samantha: Don E is revealed to have been captured by the zombie hunters.
Marko: Clive meets Bozzio again.

LUCIFER, "The Good, the Bad, and the Crispy", May 29, 2017, Actors: Tom Ellis, D. B. Woodside, Tricia Helfer and more, The Scenes: Lucifer sends his mom away & Last scene in the desert & Amenadiel finds out he was "God's favorite son"
Justyna:
"Charlotte" is such an interesting character. Despite all the cruel and hurtful things she has done, including the truly horrifying one in this episode, there's something about her that makes me really feel for her at times. It's the love for her children, the one thing that remains constant regardless of the situation and the side she finds herself on. Her interactions with Lucifer and Amenadiel were brilliant throughout her story and this episode. It's no surprise then that the scene that's most memorable for me this week is the goodbye between Mom and Lucifer. He's faced with an incredibly hard choice in that moment, he can end his mother's schemes once and for all, he can follow his original plan, but he doesn't. He decides to give his mom a chance for an actual new beginning and opens the door to a place of her own, a brand new world she can create with her returning powers. It's her best chance but it means the goodbye with her children. It's a beautifully done and emotional moment. Tom Ellis and Tricia Helfer deliver one of their greatest performances yet. It's clear that Lucifer still cares about his mom and letting her go is not quite as easy as he expected. "My angel..." The entire sequence, starting from Amenadiel slowing down the time and ending with the return of the real Charlotte, reminds me of my favorite scene of the show so far - the "Unsteady" sequence. The entire cast has their part to play in the moment. The music, the actors, the editing and the meaning behind the story - all complete each other perfectly and make this one an easy choice for SOTW. Kudos!
Diana: Last scene in the desert. After being attacked, Lucifer wakes up in the middle of nowhere - in a hot desert - and he finds his wings back. At first I thought it was a flashback from the moment Lucifer arrived in LA, before the series start. Then, we learned he really gained his wings back so I wonder who gave them to him? What is going on? What is his (or her) purpose? Can't wait for season 3.
Jaz: Amenadiel finding out he was "God's favorite son". After losing his powers, it was nice to see Amenadiel feel a sense of purpose again, I can't wait to see where that'll take him into season 3. My face hurt from smiling as I watched Luci and Amenadiel fight over the necklace. Their brotherly bond is one of the greatest things about this show.

SILICON VALLEY, "Customer Service", May 28, 2017, Actors: Thomas Middleditch and more, The Scene: The gang tries to secure funding
Milo:
The gang tries to secure funding, only for the backers to pull out once they learn that Gavin is no longer with them. This was a string of intercut scenes that really paid off, especially with one potential backer going so far as to tell them that he was interested only to withdraw his offer in front of their faces when he was told by his assistant that Gavin was no longer part of the team. The montage worked really well and put the team in a very difficult position indeed, serving as a great way to add to the tension as well as provide some excellent humor.

STILL STAR-CROSSED, "In Fair Verona, Where We Lay Our Scene", May 29, 2017, Actors: Lashana Lynch, Zuleikha Robinson, The Scene: Rosaline stands up to Lady Capulet (picked by Marko)

THE AMERICANS, "The Soviet Division", May 30, 2017, Actors: Keri Russell, Holly Taylor
The Scene: Elizabeth and Paige practice fighting (picked by DarkUFO)

THE LEFTOVERS, "The Most Powerful Man in the World (and His Identical Twin Brother)", May 28, 2017, Actors: Justin Theroux, Ann Dowd, The Scenes: Kevin has to kill everyone to save himself & Patti and Kevin watch the nuclear missiles descend
Darth Locke:
Kevin has to kill himself, then everyone else, in order to save himself. Sometimes this show can be so psychologically disturbing and this was one of those times. Still channeling a darker version of LOST in a lot of respects (while also touching on contemporary issues), it has been very interesting to see how this version of Jack, I mean Kevin, has to come to some kind of emotional or spiritual terms with himself, which in this case seems to be about the idea that perhaps, love conquers all...
Milo: Patti and Kevin watch the nuclear missiles descend from the sky. A great homage to Fight Club's ending done in a brilliant way to cap off an excellent episode. Also picked by DarkUFO
