A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.
BETTER CALL SAUL, "Fall", June 12, 2017, Actor: Rhea Seehorn, The Scene: Kim's car crash
Darth Locke: It's no secret that Kim has tendency to prove herself by pushing herself too far, although I suspect that a favor asked by Mesa Verde, is not really them "asking". I chose this scene because of the way it was shot. It was interesting to see through Kim's car window as the car, at first, seemed to drive uphill, until it hit the curve in the road. Then it was as though the viewers saw the impact, as opposed to seeing the actual crash. Unusual way to film such a scene.
DOCTOR WHO, "The Eaters of Light", June 17, 2017, Actors: Peter Capaldi, Michelle Gomez, The Scene: The Doctor and Missy talk at the end
Justyna: We're almost at the finish line of the season and I can honestly say that I enjoyed all the episodes so far. This hour was another good one with quite a few memorable scenes that I considered to highlight in the article. But in the end, I went with the final minutes of the episode and yet another Missy appearance, as she once again proves to be the real scene stealer. The dynamics between Peter Capaldi and Michelle Gomez continue to be excellent and the main focus of the season (Missy's possible change) is getting more and more attention with each hour. There's the obvious question whether Missy's actions and words can be trusted. She's the Doctor's oldest friend and enemy after all. To have even the smallest chance that she can be his friend once again, after all this time, that someone else like him could simply be there for him and bring back the memory of home, that really means the world for the Doctor. But considering their history, the Doctor is afraid to have hope, making all this even harder for the Time Lord. Regardless of Missy's true intentions, the actress portraying her is brilliant. Her and Peter Capaldi work perfectly together and I'm already sad to see them both departing the show soon. It's an emotional and powerful moment. "That's the trouble with hope. It's hard to resist." Kudos to cast & crew for their continuously wonderful work on the series.
DJRiter: The Doctor & Missy "time for us to become friends again?" scene. Peter Capaldi and Michelle Gomez were brilliant! And who'd ever believe I'd feel sorry for Missy, but Gomez's tears got to me!
FARGO, "Aporia", June 14, 2017, Actors: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, David Thewlis and more
The Scenes: Nikki and Mr. Wrench steal the Semi Truck & Varga and Nikki meet
Darth Locke: Nikki and Mr. Wrench steal the Semi Truck.
DarkUFO: VM Varga and Nikki finally meet.
iZOMBIE, "Conspiracy Weary", June 13, 2017, Actors: Rahul Kohli, Malcolm Goodwin and more, The Scenes: Harley is revealed to be a zombie & Ravi's discovery at the end
Laura: Harley is revealed to be a zombie. This scene felt really tense. In an isolated, underground bunker that Harley made, Liv and Clive are ready to confront him. They were going to arrest him for Wally’s murder. He won’t go quietly so Clive shoots him. Liv has a vision, and it’s not him who killed Wally. Clive is feeling grief over killing an innocent man (to be fair, he really wasn’t the most innocent man) when it’s revealed that he’s a zombie. Now this makes things interesting! Welcome back, iZombie! The show is finally hitting its stride that it did late in Season 2 again. We don’t know how Harley became a zombie yet (my guess is that it was during that sublime opening sequence; someone accidentally scratched him in the fray) but we do know that Clive doesn’t need to feel guilty for shooting him. We’re close to finding out who killed Wally and how important Harley and Tatum were in all of this. The Baracus stuff is getting interesting too. So I cannot wait to see the final two episodes of the season!
Samantha: Ravi discovers the front page news.
ORPHAN BLACK, "Clutch of Greed", June 17, 2017, Actors: Tatiana Maslany, Skyler Wexler, James Frain, The Scenes: Ferdinand kills MK & Sarah sends Kira off with Rachel
Darth Locke: Ferdinand brutally kills MK. MK wasn't a character that we got to know too well on screen (but she is featured in an Orphan Black comic series), but she was the missing link to Helsinki and did provide another window into the life of Beth Childs. Ultimately her death was pretty sad, because between Rachel's newfound inner peace and Kira's resistance to leave, along with being very sick, it feels like MK died for nothing. There is a lot of pressure on Sarah again going forward and it's hard to imagine Ferdinand being redeemable either. I think his days are probably numbered.
DJRiter: Two episodes in and so many candidates for SOTW. Instead of the shocking scenes, I'm going for the heart-rending moment when Sarah had to send Kira off with Rachel and her daughter barely looked at her. Maslany was especially powerful in her pain and misery. Her silent tears as Kira walked away tore at my heart!
REIGN, "All it Cost Her...", June 16, 2017, Actors: Adelaide Kane, Jonathan Goad, The Scene: Mary confronts John Knox
Marko: Mary tells John Knox that he hates and prosecutes her only cause she is a woman. I will miss Adelaide Kane's portrayal of Mary, Queen of Scots. She always found that perfect tone and strength in her voice while delivering these phenomenal performances. And this scene was just up there with all her brilliant moments. The strength and the consistant faith in her beliefs even in those moments facing certain death were perfectly executed.
SHADOWHUNTERS, "You Are Not Your Own", June 12, 2017, Actors: Matthew Daddario, Alan van Sprang, The Scene: Magnus tries to convince Alec that he's trapped in Valentine's body
Justyna: I have to start by saying that I'm really glad I decided to stay with this show. While I was only a casual viewer back in season one, this one is certainly growing on me. There's a number of interesting plots and character developments that I'm enjoying this year and it seems like the series is only getting better with each episode. Though there were quite a few memorable moments that I would love to highlight from the hour (a shout-out to Jace and his grandmother's interactions) but in the end I decided to go with the scene that I found to be the hardest to watch, but impossible to miss. It was probably the worst hour of the series for Magnus yet. He's trapped in the body of the most hated person around, being tortured and with no one left to believe him and fight for him when he needs it the most. It's quite a nightmare scenario for the fans' favorite warlock but Alan Van Sprang absolutely shines in this new and unexpected role. He's not only able to portray being the terrified and confused victim of the body swap spell, but he truly embraces the character and feels very much familiar to the Magnus we've come to know. Certainly one of the best performances on the series so far. And then there's Alec who finds himself in an impossible position during the hour, confronted with the possibility that someone he loves is going through hell. Unfortunately, knowing Valentine's nature, he doesn't allow himself to believe Magnus, not until he gets more proof. The conflict within him is also beautifully portrayed by Matthew Daddario. It's a powerful, intense and heartbreaking scene. Especially considering that Magnus and Alec are two of my favorite characters on the show. Hopefully this experience will only help them grow stronger together. Kudos to cast & crew for another great episode!
SILICON VALLEY, "The Keenan Vortex", June 11, 2017, Actor: T. J. Miller, The Scene: Erlich sits motionless in the burning palapa
Milo: The shot of Erlich sitting motionless in the burning palapa. Given the news that T.J. Miller was leaving at the end of the season I honestly felt for a second there that this could potentially be how his character was going out, which would have taken the show in a very dark tone indeed, but it was pulled off effectively and played without expectations by having Erlich survive.
THE HANDMAID'S TALE, "Night", June 14, 2017, Actors: Elisabeth Moss, Madeline Brewer and more, The Scene: The united Handmaids decide not to punish Janine
Marko: This scene was everything. I was very weirded out when I started watching this show and then pieces really fell into each other so perfectly. The writers did an amazing job with the whole finale delivering emotional and heartbreaking scenes throughout but this one was simply beyond everything they have done and so freaking empowering.
THE ORIGINALS, "Voodoo Child", June 16, 2017, Actors: Joseph Morgan, Summer Fontana
The Scene: Klaus encourages Hope to keep fighting
Marko: Summer Fontana and Joseph Morgan are a match made in TV father-daughter heaven. Such great chemistry combined with powerful words and brilliant performances just made my heart melt.
WYNONNA EARP, "Shed Your Skin", June 16, 2017, Actors: Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, The Scene: Wynonna tells Waverly she thinks Willa is haunting her (picked by Samantha)
