This historical TV drama follows the lives of the Crawley family and their servants in Downton Abbey. The immensely popular series begins in 1912 when the Titanic sank before following the house’s transformation into a convalescent home in the First World War almost mirroring the real story as Highclere Castle’s role as a surgical hospital. The book ‘Lady Almina and the real Downton Abbey’ was a best-selling book which shared this story.

The Countess of Carnarvon commented “We are delighted to be welcoming Downton back to Highclere again. Julian and the wonderful cast and crew of Downton were so much a part of our lives and we will enjoy our next role with them.”

The movie will be a Carnival Films production, with Focus Features and Universal Pictures International distributing. Julian Fellowes, who created the period drama, has written the screenplay and will produce the feature. Brian Percival, who directed the original series’ pilot, will direct the film.

Gareth Neame, Carnival’s executive chairman, will also produce. He said: “When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production. Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as ‘Downton’ comes to the big screen”.

Film in Development; Expected to Star Filming in 2018

Thanks to Chris and Dumble for the heads up.

It’s been less than two years since Downton Abbey came to an end, but a movie is in the works, EW has confirmed.

Michael Edelstein, president of NBCUniversal International Studios, told the Associated Press on Wednesday that the film has “been in the works for some time” and production expected to begin in 2018.

SINGAPORE (AP) — A “Downton Abbey” movie is in the works, with production likely to begin in 2018, an NBCUniversal executive said Wednesday.

Michael Edelstein, president at NBCUniversal International Studios, said it hopes to assemble 20 cast members from the popular TV series.

“There’s a movie in the works. It’s been in the works for some time,” Edelstein said in Singapore at a red-carpet event for “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition,” which features costumes, locations and never-before-seen footage from the TV show. The exhibition opened in the city-state last week and ends July 31.

“We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the (cast) together. Because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year,” Edelstein said.

Emmy-winning writer and creator Julian Fellowes also said he hoped a film would be made. “I think we’ve got a film in us. I hope it happens,” he said.
