MOVIES: Resident Evil Franchise to be Rebooted
Thanks to Dot for the heads up.

The “Resident Evil” movie franchise has not ended after all.

Details such as the reboot director, stars, and how the reboot would fit into the franchise narrative are being kept under wraps. But Martin Moszkowicz, chairman of the board at Constantin Film, did confirm to Variety at the Cannes Film Festival that a reboot is in development at the giant German production company, which owns rights to the franchise and has produced all of its installments.

The franchise was set to end with this year’s “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” which grossed $312 million worldwide after its January release, including an eye-popping $160 million in China alone. Sony helped sow the seeds of success by securing a release for “Resident Evil: Afterlife” and “Resident Evil: Extinction” in China.

Great News - Season 2 - Tina Fey to Guest

Tina Fey created and starred in Emmy-winning office comedy 30 Rock. And she will also guest star on the new workplace comedy she is executive producing for NBC, Great News, which has been renewed for a second season after an inauspicious start. What’s more, Great News landed a great time slot for Season 2, sandwiched between the new seasons of Will & Grace and This Is Us at 8:30 PM on Thursday.

“It’s safe to say that Tina Fey will be popping into that world next year,” NBC topper Bob Greenblatt said during a call Sunday.

It hasn’t been decided yet whether Fey will play herself or a character. (Fey also has guest-starred on her Netflix comedy series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.)

“She is very important to this company,” Greenblatt said. “The more of Tina the better.”

He added that the hope is to incorporate a slew of big-name guest stars on Great News next season in the vein of 30 Rock.

“It is an elastic concept, a newsroom, workplace where anyone can pop in,” Greenblatt said.”That’s what we’ll try to achieve next season.”

Fey also has comedy pilot The Sackett Sisters in play at NBC. It is not dead yet, Greenblatt confirmed.

21:15 - Judge Dredd: Mega City One - Live-Action TV Show in Development
Thanks to Dot for the heads up.

Entertainment Weekly can exclusively reveal that independent entertainment studio IM Global and independent U.K. games developer and publisher Rebellion have struck a deal to turn the iconic comic book character into a live-action TV show called Judge Dredd: Mega City One. The potential show is set in a future where the East Coast of the U.S. has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis. The plan is to make the series an ensemble drama about a team of Judges — futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner — as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd century throws at them.

Attached as executive producers of the new show are IM Global Television president Mark Stern, who developed Battlestar Galactica, Helix, and Defiance at Syfy; IM Global Television CEO Stuart Ford; and the owners of Rebellion, Jason and Chris Kingsley, who along with Ford were also executive producers of the 2012 Dredd film.

“This is one of those seminal sci-fi properties that seems to only become and more relevant with age,” said Stern in a statement. “Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it’s also fun as hell! As a fan of the comics and both films, it’s a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris in adapting this for television.”

“We’re very excited to be beginning the journey to get more of Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One on the television screen,” said Jason and Chris Kingsley said. “Thanks to the legions of fans who have kept up pressure on social media, and a lot of background work and enthusiasm, we aim to make a big budget production that will satisfy both our vast comics audience and the even greater general screen-watching public.”
